COVID-19 Reminders
Thank you for helping us continue to keep our community healthy by keeping your children home when they are sick, participating in weekly COVID-19 testing, adjusting drop-off/pick-up procedures, supplying well-fitting masks for your children and so much more.
Health Reminders
-
Please continue to keep your children home if they don't feel well and notify nurse@wmsde.org of any exposures.
-
All COVID test results (positive and negative) should be sent to covidresults@wmsde.org to allow for the fastest processing of the results. Results sent to other email addresses (including directly to the nurse or other staff members) may not be received and processed as promptly.
- Take some time to check the fit of your child's masks and reinforce the importance of keeping the nose fully covered when masking.
- We have observed that many surgical masks do not fit tightly enough for many children's faces - if this is the case for your child, consider combining it with a better-fitting cloth mask or purchasing child-size KN95 masks.
- If your child is unable to wear their mask properly, they may be asked to quarantine/isolate for the full 10 days if they are exposed or test positive.
Car Line Reminders
-
Please make sure your child is masked and ready to go before pulling up to the front of the car line. If your child needs extra time to prepare to exit the vehicle, please pull out of the way and re-enter the line when they are ready to be screened.
- Assist our staff and give your child a good start to the school day by arriving during our designated drop-off times. Staff are scheduled to assist with drop-off during specific times, after which they move on to our duties throughout the school. Thank you for supporting your child and helping our school's operations by arriving at school on time!
Please feel free to contact us with any questions!

A Busy Week in Room 5
Kira Stauffer, Lead Toddler Teacher
Last week was full of excitement - everyone's smiles, laughter and conversations seemed to be never-ending. One of the new activities we added to the classroom was a mailbox. Throughout the week, children "wrote" letters and put them inside. On Thursday, we opened the mailbox and were amazed by how many letters had been "sent" by our enthusiastic students. When we went to the STEAM (Maker) Studio to work with Paula, the children made suet feeders for the birds we have been seeing outside. The children have been looking at books about different birds, their feathers and their eggs. We also read books about how and why birds build nests. When we went outside, some of the children noticed sap dripping from holes in our pine tree. This led us to a conversation about how some birds make holes in trees to get food from them, which causes sap to drip out. The children smelled and touched the sap for a great sensory experience! I am so excited to see what your children discover about birds and nature this week as we start to move into warmer weather!

February Fun: Lunar New Year, Penguins & Valentine's Day
Erin Winner, Lead Primary (3-6) Teacher
February has been quite an exciting month so far! We started by learning a little bit about Lunar New Year. It is officially the Year of the Tiger! We read a few books about this special celebration and discussed some traditions of the holiday. We learned that the color red is associated with good luck. We made connections about how families gather together and share special food during many celebrations around the world. The children made their own dragon masks, which we wore to the dragon parade put on by the 6-9 students. Everyone enjoyed the music and some even danced along!
Room 17 was the first class to record their performance of the Primary Program's penguin play last week. The children were thrilled with their penguin costumes and did a great job standing on the stage. We did three penguin-themed chants and played musical instruments such as drums, rhythm sticks, egg shakers and triangles. The play concluded with a penguin dance, which the children thoroughly enjoyed. A video of our performance will be shared later this month.
We also celebrated Valentine's Day last week. We set up a card-making station in the classroom, along with a special post office mailbox. The children had so much fun making cards for one another. This was not only a good art and writing activity, but it also fostered kindness and empathy. These are themes that we integrate regularly throughout the year as we support children's social and emotional development.

Feeling the Love in Room 24
Melissa Sugzdinis, Lead Lower Elementary (6-9) Teacher
We were feeling the love in Room 24 last week! We kicked off with making heart glyphs and completing Valentine-themed math. We also voted on the animals to be purchased through our Heifer Project fundraiser. Students ultimately decided to distribute the money (with Room 22, we raised more than $400!) in a way that we could purchase "shares" of each animal we researched. Thank you for your generous contributions! We ended Monday with our Valentine's Day exchange. It was a lovely sight to see kids excitedly delivering their messages and treats to one another!
On Tuesday. we celebrated the 100th day of school and welcomed Erica Stroud, our new PE teacher. Kids worked their way through exercise stations and got a full-body workout!
On Wednesday, we worked on our biography projects. Students looked at the early lIfe, adulthood and notable achievements of their subject. The biography lapbooks that we are making take a tremendous amount of effort. Each small section requires reading, understanding, synthesizing information, writing it down, spelling it correctly, and then cutting and gluing pieces in the right places. We are slowly working our way through this project, peppering in mini-lessons as we go.
Thursday brought a close to our short week. We finished up work plans, had math and language lessons, and used some extra work time to complete our biography work for the week.

Spirit Week 2022 - Supporting the Food Bank of Delaware
Written by the Middle School Students
WMS Spirit Week is back!
This year, Spirit Week will be held March 7-11 and will include Pajama Day, Crazy Hair Day and Twin Day! These activities are not mandatory, but they are very fun for students of all ages!
This year during Spirit Week, the 9-12 and Middle School students are participating in an activity called CANgineering. In CANgineering, students use canned and boxed goods to create a visual piece of art for a given theme. This year's theme is Almond, the 9-12 students' class pet (a guinea pig)! WMS kindly asks for any donations of canned or boxed goods that could go toward this project; cash donations are also accepted. All of the food from the visual pieces will be donated to the Delaware Food Bank after the project is finished. Not only does this project provide a great learning opportunity for WMS's 9-12 and Middle School students - it's also allows us to give back to the community that we all love so much. In the coming days, be on the lookout for a flyer in your child's backpack that lists all of the themed days and the requested donation items.
