2024-25 Re-enrollment Opens Today!

Dear WMS Families,

We are pleased to share that re-enrollment for the 2024-25 school year is opening today, Wednesday, January 10. As a returning WMS family, you have enrollment priority if you complete your re-enrollment materials by the February 15 deadline. We look forward to welcoming your family back to WMS for the 2024-25 school year!

Wilmington Montessori School is accredited by the American Montessori Society and has achieved the highest level of accreditation possible. At every grade level, WMS shapes its programs around these Montessori standards as well as those of the Delaware Office of Child Care Licensing. WMS integrates the Montessori Method with evidence-based instructional activities that prepare your student for their future schooling and career. At WMS, the Common Core skills and standards are achieved by employing the Montessori hands-on materials and engaging in academic projects to extend learning and depth of understanding. Montessori education is an education for a lifetime - whether your student is a Toddler, Primary, Elementary or Middle School student. Each step along the way, WMS supports your student in reaching their highest potential - academically, socially and emotionally.

Sometime today, an email from admissions@wmsde.org will be sent to your family’s designated FACTS email address (the same email address used for your child’s 2023-24 enrollment packet). This message will include instructions for accessing the re-enrollment materials by way of the FACTS Family Portal.

Note:  If  you do not receive this email from FACTS by the end of the day, please check your spam/junk folders and other email addresses the school may have on file for your family. If you are unable to find the message, please contact admissions@wmsde.org for assistance.

When logging into the Family Portal for re-enrollment, you will use the username and password you used last year during enrollment/re-enrollment. If you do not remember your username, we will be able to assist you. Please do not create a new account.

If you need assistance with or have questions about re-enrollment, please contact the WMS Admissions office at admissions@wmsde.org or the Business Office at businessoffice@wmsde.org.

This year, the Toddler and Primary Programs were both at capacity.  We are projecting waitlists for the 2024-25 school year as well. To ensure your child’s placement for next year, it is important that we receive your re-enrollment contract and non-refundable/non-transferable deposit by the Thursday, February 15, 2023 re-enrollment deadline. After Thursday, February 15, 2024, remaining spaces in our programs will be available to our waiting list of new applicants. We value your family and plan for your re-enrollment. However, if you are choosing not to re-enroll, we ask that you notify admissions@wmsde.org as soon as possible in order to inform our planning for next year.

The Board of Directors, teachers and staff are committed to the families and students at WMS and to making 2024-25 another great school year with your family. Thank you for your trust in and commitment to WMS.

Sincerely,

Laura Z. Orsic

Director of Enrollment Management

Lower Elementary (6-9) Program

Great Lessons: Exploring the Stories of Language and Numbers

Cosmic Education, also known as the Great Lessons, is an integral part of the Montessori curriculum. These lessons are designed to awaken a child’s imagination and curiosity, and serve as an introduction to a variety of academic areas, providing a “Big Picture” view of how the sciences, art, history, language and geography are interrelated.

After delving into the first three Great Lessons - the Coming of the Universe, the Timeline of Life and the Coming of Humans - in December, the 6-9 students experienced their fourth and fifth Great Lessons last week - the Story of Language and the Story of Numbers. They discussed questions like, "Why do we need language and numbers?" and "What might have been the first words?" Students considered how communication has evolved over the last few thousand years, and what might be next, asking, "What are the advantages and disadvantages of carving your ideas into stone, writing them on paper and sending an electronic text?"

Third-year students researched ancient number systems from around the world and presented what they learned to their classmates using Google Slides as they led the Story of Numbers lesson. To conclude the lesson, the students ventured into the woods, seeking natural materials that could have been utilized for ancient writing and counting.
