Montessori Education: Nurturing Each Child's Unique Learning Path
What is the purpose of school? Education, at least through elementary school, became mandatory between 1852 and 1918 when it was required in every state. We’ve all seen pictures of classrooms from “way back when” compared to classrooms of today. They are often frighteningly similar - but not at WMS. Not only do our students’ environments look different, their daily school experiences at WMS are often very different from most of our schooling.
Dr. Montessori developed a strong curriculum based on her observation and interactions with children. Through her observations, she was confident in building not only an educational philosophy and pedagogy, but also developing quality materials to support future learners throughout the world. At WMS, students have the benefit of her work, supported by current educational and neuroscience research. Students are met where they are, challenged to move to the next level, supported as needed, and allowed to move forward when ready. If you know anything about human development, you understand the wonder of this approach in educating children. Each of us progresses at different rates depending on a variety of factors - previous knowledge, life experiences, likes and dislikes, and relationships. I’m sure you can remember a time when things came easily and little support or encouragement was needed, and others when motivation was a struggle and you benefited from an extra push to help achieve your goals. This is ongoing throughout our lives.
WMS teachers pride themselves in getting to know each and every student, not simply as an academic being, but also as a person. They spend their time in lesson preparation reflecting on how children learn, the right level of difficulty in each task, and how to inspire and motivate them as learners. Their focus on helping children gain skills is as important to them as figuring out how to motivate them as learners and thinkers. Learning is not linear. It requires a bit of messiness, and has its ups and downs.
As you prepare to meet with your children’s teachers next week, what are you curious about? What do you want to know and understand about their school experience? What questions will you ask to learn more about the ways in which your child is growing and developing? The teachers are just as eager as you are to share more of your child’s world with you. They want to share their expertise as facilitators in your children’s growth and development in all areas. We are pleased that we can offer this opportunity to continue your learning journey as you gain even more knowledge of your children as independent, curious and thoughtful beings.
