Middle School Students Explore Movement Through Life Sports
Adolescence is a time of rapid change and growth—both mentally and physically. At WMS, Middle School students continue their physical education through Life Sports, a program designed to introduce them to a variety of physical activities that promote lifelong health and an active lifestyle.
Instead of traditional PE classes, middle-schoolers take part in Life Sports, an expeditionary learning experience that takes them beyond the classroom and into the local community. This year, students have explored Capoeira (an Afro-Brazilian art form that combines elements of martial arts, acrobatics, dance and music), canoeing and strength training at Breaking Barriers gym. They have just begun tap dance lessons as their next Life Sports activity, in preparation for our spring musical, Newsies. Previous Life Sports activities include rock climbing, CrossFit, kickboxing, Zumba and rowing.
With input from students, Life Sports offers opportunities to discover new interests, develop skills and build healthy habits that can last a lifetime.
