Camp Montessori - Early Registration Closes Tomorrow!
With the chilly weather outside, it's hard to believe that we are just two and a half months away from the start of camp... but warmer days are ahead!
Early camp registration closes tomorrow, Thursday, March 31. After this time, decisions will be made on staffing and the number of camp groups at each level, AND our early registration discount (10% off if you sign your family up for five or more weeks) will expire! Many of our camp groups filled to capacity last year, leaving us unable to accommodate some families who made later decisions about their summer plans. Don't let your child miss out on a summer of fun and learning!
Check out our camp website to register and learn more about summer fun at our core and specialty (archery and academic enrichment) camps!

COVID-19 Vaccinations
Getting a COVID-19 vaccine is an important step to preventing COVID-19. Currently, children ages 5 and up are eligible for the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. Click here to find vaccination sites and events in the area.
When your child has been vaccinated, please upload their card to Magnus. If your child had their second vaccine dose more than five months ago, they are now eligible for a booster. Per the State of Delaware's guidance for schools, students who are eligible for a booster but have not yet received it will have to follow the same quarantine guidelines as an unvaccinated student in the case of in-home exposure.
Thank you for everything you do to keep our community safe and healthy!

CLASSROOM NEWS - As Seen on Bloomz
|
|
As we shared before spring break, many of our toddlers are becoming interested in writing, whether they are tracing letters, writing them or simply scribbling. In Room 5, the students enjoyed filling a mailbox in the classroom with the letters they had written. Kira, Room 5's lead teacher decided to take this a step further, and proposed a pen pal relationship with one of the Primary classrooms. The toddlers were thrilled to receive letters back from the Primary students in Room 20, some of whom might be their classmates next year.
"This will be a great way to get to know other children in the school and help our class start the beginning stages of writing!" Kira said. "I set up our next mailbox system in our classroom, where each child has their mail slot. I'm excited to see this process unfold throughout the rest of the school year!"

Women's History Month
Marilyn Faralli, Lead Primary (3-6) Teacher
In honor of Women's History Month, students in Room 20 learned about Mae Jemison, the first black woman to travel into space. She was an astronaut, a scientist, an engineer, a dancer, a doctor, an author and a teacher. She was an inspirational woman who reached for her dreams and broke down barriers for women in the field of science. Ever since she was young, Mae wanted to go into space. It bothered her that there were no female astronauts. Her parents instilled in her the determination to pursue her dreams and work hard to achieve them.
In September 1992, Mae was one of seven astronauts to travel into space aboard the space shuttle Endeavour. The children enjoyed learning about Mae and her journey to "reach for the stars." To celebrate Mae Jemison and how, like Jackie Robinson, she paved the way for so many others after her, we made our own space shuttles and pondered our own dreams.
"If I can dream it, if I can believe in it and if I work hard for it, anything is possible."

Lower Elementary (6-9) Program

Pinwheels for Peace
Melissa Connelly, Lead Lower Elementary (6-9) Teacher
This week's Time Magazine for Kids featured a story about the war in Ukraine. "But this topic isn't school-appropriate!" a child said, worried that reference to war went against more peaceful topics we usually talk about in school.
This became an opportunity to talk to the children about Maria Montessori's vision of peace. After living through World War I and II, one of Maria Montessori's goals was to offer children methods and strategies to resolve conflict peacefully. How can we be appropriately assertive, knowing how to stand up for ourselves and others when needed in a peaceful way? What compromise strategies do we have? How can we be more aware of our own and others' emotions so that we can communicate effectively at a time when everyone can hear each other?
We thought about what methods and strategies we have, and then we created Pinwheels for Peace to help share our desire for peace for Ukraine and for everyone around the world.

CANgineering Update
Allie Colflesh, Lead Upper Elementary (9-12) Teacher
Thank you to the entire WMS community for once again stepping up to support those in need!
With your donations, the students recreated the Titanic and iceberg with our classroom pet, Almond, on the front. (She's the queen of the world!). The structure was made with all of the donated food as well as purchased food from our monetary donations of $572.26!
Younger students will be invited to "tour" the ship before it is disassembled and the food is taken to the Delaware Food Bank next week! Thank you for your help feeding the hungry in Delaware!
