Health Reminders

While COVID-19 remains on all of our minds, it is important to be aware that there are other illnesses, some contagious, that we are seeing in our children. As life begins to return to “normal," other viruses in children, such as severe colds, croup, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and seasonal influenza, are beginning to circulate more widely.

Regardless of COVID-19 results, if your child continues to experience symptoms such as a fever, runny nose, cough, sore throat, rashes with fever, gastrointestinal symptoms or any symptoms out of the ordinary, please consult with a physician or contact Nurse Mariah to rule out contagious diseases that require treatment. Additional details regarding illness policies are available in the parent handbook or by contacting the nurse.

Please keep your child home if they are too sick to make it through the full school day. If your child becomes ill during the school day and needs to go home, the school nurse or another staff member will call for a pick up.

As always, please contact Nurse Mariah at nurse@wmsde.org if you have questions!

Spring Break Travel

Spring break is almost here! We know that many families will spend time traveling and visiting friends and family members near and far.

As you make plans for your family, we encourage you to continue to keep the safety of our community in mind. Testing with Quidel will resume on Tuesday, March 29. Please test prior to return if you suspect COVID-19 exposure or have traveled to a location with a high level of community spread.

Thank you for all of your support! Have a wonderful break!

Policies & Procedures

WMS's COVID-19 policies are based on guidelines from the CDC and State of Delaware Department of Education Office of Child Care Licensing. We continue to monitor those sources for information to adjust our policies and practices as needed.
CLASSROOM NEWS - As Seen on Bloomz
Toddler Program
Pre-Writing Skills (at all levels)
Alyssa Ross, Lead Toddler Teacher
The children in Room 4 have been interested in writing. Some are able to write or trace letters, while others simply scribble. We use pencils and markers to make lines and scribbles, triangles and letters. These pre-writing skills will help prepare them for the Primary Program.
Primary (3-6) Program
100th Day of School
Diane Rineer, Lead Primary (3-6) Teacher

Last month, students in the Primary Program continued the annual tradition of bringing in 100 items to represent our 100th day of school. In Room 18, each child got to sit in the "sharing chair" and state what items they chose and why. The student could then take two questions or comments from the audience. The children truly shine during presentations! During the day, they also worked with staff and friends to count their items.
Lower Elementary (6-9) Program
It's All Business in Room 22
Melissa Connelly, Lead Lower Elementary (6-9) Teacher

It always surprises me how true to life a 6- to 9-year-old business simulation can be. Each team of students designed and created paper products. This business expenses included $1 per piece of paper, $1 for a set of scissors, glue, and markers, and a $1 rental fee for the "store space."

After setting up their “stores,” each child had $5 of “Room 22 bucks” to spend. Any profits (after paying off their business expense loan to the Bank of Christina and Melissa) were split among the team of business workers. Two businesses made bookmarks, an inexpensive and easy-to-create item, but the competition between businesses was fierce. The paper plane business came out as a clear success story, but pricing the planes for the most profit was challenging. One business invested too much money in materials while another ran out of items quickly and would have done better producing more product.
Upper Elementary (9-12) Program
The Birth of Rock & Roll - 9-12 Music
BrendaRose Simkin, Music Teacher

In honor of Black History Month (but 28 days isn’t enough), we are embarking on a 400-year music history curriculum that starts in Africa, crosses the Atlantic and begins a journey starting with work songs and continuing through spirituals, ragtime, Dixieland, the blues, jazz, soul, funk, rhythm & blues, rock & roll and hip-hop. Along the way, we stopped for a “cake walk” dance contest in New Orleans, to the music of King Oliver’s Jazz Creole Orchestra with Louis Armstrong playing the “Snake Rag.”

P.S. The 9-12 students' annual talent show "Diary of the 9-12s) will premiere on Facebook Live on Tuesday, March 15 at 7 p.m. Join us for the watch party!
Middle School Program
Spirit Week Food Drive and CANgineering Project

The middle-schoolers are already hard at work sorting the food they've collected with the 9-12 students through this week's Spirit Week campaign! If you haven't already contributed, there's still time - you can drop off food donations like canned goods, pasta, cereal, peanut butter, rice, etc., during car line. Monetary donations are also being accepted, which will be used to purchase additional items needed to build a CANgineered sculpture of Almond the guinea pig. Along with being a community service project and an opportunity to create art, students' math and engineering skills will be integrated as they calculate the funds needed to purchase items for the project and consider how to make their sculpture structurally sound with limited supplies. All items will be donated to the Delaware Food Bank upon completion of the project.
