Dear Families,
In a few days, you will receive an email from WMS parents Amelia Wiggins and Jonathan Huntoon (introduced below), our 2022-23 Annual Fund Parent Chairs. In the message, Amelia and Jonathan share their family's experiences at WMS over the past five years, highlighting memorable Montessori educational experiences and sharing their gratitude for the relationships their family has formed within the WMS community. With this in mind, our theme for these year's Annual Fund Drive is #Connected2WMS.
Last year, the annual fund totaled more than $80,000 in gifts from current parents, grandparents, staff, board members and other generous friends of WMS.
Your annual fund gifts in the past have made a difference in countless ways, including:
- Providing financial assistance to families who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford a WMS education.
- Supporting our teachers’ quests for lifelong learning, including this year's focus on diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, as well as brain-based learning.
- Allowing us to maintain and enhance our beautiful 25-acre campus and facilities, including our new patio and seating area and materials for our outdoor classroom spaces.
The WMS Annual Fund Drive is a weeklong celebration of giving centered in the school's lobby. Stop by next week when you pick your children up at school for games, prizes, and opportunities to share why you love and feel connected to WMS. Prize opportunities include:
- Make a gift of $5 or more and your child will have the opportunity to punch a cup in the lobby after school and win some WMS swag including smaller items like keychains and 3D printed meerkats and larger items like Beanie Baby baskets and spirit wear - everyone’s a winner!
-
Make a gift of $75 and create a social media post using the hashtag #Connected2WMS for a chance to win a WMS swag bag including spirit wear and more!
-
Donate $200 or more for a chance to win a one-of-a-kind handmade meerkat, courtesy of Once Again Bears!
- Donate $1,000 or more to enter our raffle for your very own reserved WMS parking space in a prime location in front of the school to use for the rest of the school year!
- All donors will get to add to our Golden Bead chain - We are hoping to create a 1000 Cube and reach 100% family participation!
As always, we thank you for all of your support! Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions!

Meet Our 2022-23 Parent Annual Fund Chairs!
|
Greetings, fellow WMS parents!
We know many of you, but wanted to take a moment to introduce ourselves. This is our fifth school year at WMS, with our kindergartener Charlie now in Room 19 and our daughter Lilly in the Room 3 Toddler classroom. Outside of school, Jonathan is a chemical engineer at DuPont, Amelia is in audience development at the Delaware Art Museum, and all four of us are into gardening and exploring nature. We love this school and the rich community of families we've found through it, so we're excited to help rally support for WMS during this year's annual fund.
We look forward to working together with you in the coming weeks!

Pumpkins, Pumpkins Everywhere!
|
|
Pumpkins could be found through all of our Toddler classrooms this October. Along with serving as a popular decoration during the fall and Halloween seasons, they were used for science projects (sink or float experiments), matching activities, art projects, cooking (roasted pumpkin seeds), practical life work (washing, hammering, lifting) and more!

Montessori Model United Nations Progress Continues
Emma Mulrine, Lead Middle School Teacher

The sixth through eighth-graders have been working hard on their research for March's Montessori Model U.N. conference, Our countries and topics have been assigned, and students are finishing up the first stage of their research - learning about their country!
This year's countries are Armenia, Belgium, Ireland and Monaco. It’s a big task to learn “everything” there is to know about a country! The MMUN gave us some helpful ways to break it down with using big topics (government, economy, transportation, etc.) and then subtopics. For example, under geography, students were directed to research the location of the country, the climate, natural resources, land use, environment current issues and international agreements relating to the environment, the area, land boundaries, elevation and the regional group. Next week, each country group will share what they have learned in an informal presentation to the class, and then we will begin our topic research.
Topics include:
- Youth, Disarmament and Non-Proliferation
- Space as a Driver for Sustainable Development
- Convention on Biological Diversity
- Adequate Housing
- Rights of the Child
- Role of Diamonds in Fueling Conflicts
- The Situation in Central America: Progress in Fashioning a Region of Peace, Freedom, Democracy and Development
- Impact of the Ukraine-Russia Conflict on Global Food Security and Related Matters
- Empowerment of Rural Women
We look forward to keeping you updated on our work!
