NEWS & NOTES

Celebrating Community and Supporting WMS Together

Dear WMS Families and Friends,

Earlier this week, we stopped into Room 19 to participate in one of the greatest Montessori traditions – our newly 5-year-old’s birth and life celebration. As we watched her classmates cheer her on while making her five trips around the sun, we were reminded of everything that makes the WMS community so special to us. From family members sharing cultural traditions in the classrooms, to the annual Halloween parade, the community service projects spearheaded by the Middle School students, the field trips and fire truck visits, the 25-acre campus and outdoor classroom, and most importantly, the caring and conscientious teachers and staff who greet each student as a worthy individual, WMS is truly an exceptional place!

We started our WMS journey in the middle of the global COVID-19 pandemic, but we have always trusted the WMS staff and community to provide the support and engagement that will allow our children to thrive, especially as we continue to live in uncertain times. The qualities instilled by a Montessori education, including independence, care and respect for themselves and others, curiosity and, most of all, peace, will become essential tools as our kids develop to their full potential. With that in mind, we are asking our fellow WMS parents, and all friends of WMS, to support this year’s Annual Fund Drive.

A donation to WMS benefits our community in so many ways. These gifts to the Annual Fund will support financial aid, help us make enhancements to our campus, fund field trips and hands-on learning experiences, further the school’s investment in diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging initiatives, expand experiences in project-based learning and the arts, and so much more. While all current families support the school with tuition dollars, these funds alone do not cover the full cost of a WMS education. Gifts of all sizes from supporters are essential in continuing the mission of WMS for students like ours and will allow the school to thrive for 60 more years. Even more, gifts from families that are currently enrolled at WMS are a powerful indication of the support within our own community that will bolster additional fundraising efforts.

We sincerely hope that you will consider making a donation, in any amount, to support this year’s Annual Fund Dive. There are many ways to give - you can donate online at wmsde.org/donate, drop a donation envelope into our pumpkin or scan our QR code as you come in the lobby!

Remember: 100 family gifts (including those made by grandparents) unlocks a $7,500 challenge gift generously offered by Alumni parents and grandparents Nancy Karibjanian and Joseph Nemecz. Any amount counts! Make a gift by next Tuesday, 11/26 to help us reach our goal!

Thank you for being part of this cherished WMS community, and for all you do to support our children and their education. We are so grateful for the experiences we have had as WMS parents, and for the community that has developed around both of our children as they have moved through the WMS curriculum. Please join us in empowering our students and our amazing school!

With gratitude,

Tiphanie and Ray Cascella

Health Reminders from the WMS Nursing Team

The weather is getting colder, which means we are beginning to spend more time indoors - both at home and at school. With this increase in indoor time comes an increase in respiratory illnesses including colds, the flu, pneumonia, RSV and COVID-19. Here are a few reminders to keep the WMS community healthy during this time.

Often when a child awakens with vague complaints (the way colds and the flu begin), it is wise to observe your child at home for an hour or two before deciding whether or not to bring them to school. Keeping a sick child at home will minimize the spread of infections and viruses in the classroom. Please do not give your child fever-reducing medicine before sending them to school.

Consider keeping your child at home if they have any of the following symptoms:

  • Mild sore throat (no fever, no known exposure to strep)
  • Headache
  • Mild stomach ache
  • Mildly stuffy or runny nose and/or cough

Definitely keep your child at home if they have any of these symptoms:

  • Fever, which is a temperature greater than 100.4° F (Your child may return to school only after they have been fever-free for a minimum of 24 hours without medication.)
  • Vomiting, diarrhea
  • Chills, weakness or muscle aches
  • Frequent congested (wet) or croupy cough or nasal congestion with frequent blowing of nose
  • Any newly developed respiratory changes, such as wheezing
  • Lethargic or uncharacteristically fussy

To help prevent respiratory illnesses, teach your children good hygiene habits:

  • Wash hands frequently using proper technique. (Video: How to Wash Your Hands)
  • Discourage touching of eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Cover mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing with a paper tissue or use your inner elbow rather than hands. (Video: How to Cover Your Sneeze and Cough). Immediately after, wash hands with soap and water. Use hand sanitizer only if soap and water are not readily available.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

Other ways to help keep your child healthy:

  • Getting enough sleep
  • Staying hydrated
  • Switch old toothbrushes out for new ones after any illness
  • Eating nutritious, immune boosting foods (Learn more here.)
  • If you like, you may send your child to school with a mask if the child is over 2 years of age and can reliably wear one without teacher reminders. This is not a requirement.

Thank you for helping to keep the WMS community healthy! Please contact the nursing team at nurse@wmsde.org with any questions.

Students Vote to Give Back: Making a Difference for Faithful Friends

On Election Day, our Elementary and Middle School students cast their votes and selected a meaningful service project: making pet treats and toys to donate to Faithful Friends Animal Society.

Yesterday, they brought their choice to life, making treats and toys that will bring comfort to animals living in the Faithful Friends shelter. This hands-on activity not only showcased their creativity and teamwork but also reminded them of the importance of giving back to their community. A big thank you to all the children for their hard work and to the adult volunteers who donated their time and t-shirts and supported this impactful project!
