A Message From The Head of School
Do you remember your first days of school at West Nottingham Academy? Last week, the long line of students, faculty and staff marched across campus behind a bagpiper to West Nottingham Presbyterian Church for our Opening of School Convocation, celebrating the start of West Nottingham Academy's 279th year! We are excited about the new academic year and feel fortunate to have you on this journey with us. Read on as we share highlights from the WNA community. |

WNA Today in Good Hands
At the suggestion of an alum, we re-established WNA Today as a monthly newsletter to keep you up to date with campus news and activities. This fall, we will be shifting once again as our students take over the logistics and content of WNA Today! Our new academic program features highly individualized academic programs for students as well as Core classes by grade level, where students learn and experience fundamental skills and content. One of the four common threads that runs the length of the program is journalism. Juniors will share responsibility for the production and release of WNA Today in the near future! Stay tuned!

Last year, well over 100 alums attended Homecoming 2021! It was amazing to hear the laughter and stories and to see how deeply our alums care about one another and about WNA. The campus looked packed as students competed and cheered each other on, parents attended conferences and competitions, and all faculty and staff were present and made the entire event happen. We hope to have many more alums come home this year! Make your plans now and invite your friends and classmates to join us! We have secured room blocks at a few local hotels, information is at the end of this newsletter.
If you or your business are interested in sponsoring any of the events or activities for the weekend, please contact Scootie Lambert Dabbs ’96 at sdabbs@wna.org for more information.

What's Happening Around Campus
Digital Design Studio
As part of the gift to establish the Center for Creative Exploration made possible by Eric Fischl ’66, WNA has completely refurbished the Digital Design Studio. The new equipment replaces computers that were over a decade old and will allow for the growth and development of new programs at the school including advanced art, digital design, computer science, and the beginnings of a WNA eSports program!

High Tech Drones and Holographic Fans
Alum Blake van Leer introduced our community to the CEOs and tech teams from AERAS and Holovisn who wowed us with their drone and holographic technologies. After the presentation, students were able to ask questions, network and even pilot the drones under the watchful eye of the FAA certified test pilot! Access to this cutting-edge technology highlights the abundance of opportunities for WNA students.

You can mentor a WNA Ram student this year!
As we help our students to Find their Passion and Unleash their Potential, we seek to match them with alumni and friends in their areas of career interest. Our Aspire program will connect students with professionals in their field of inquiry with the purpose of building their professional network. Do you have the capability to answer questions related to your career? You can play a role in the success and personal and professional development of WNA students through mentorship, networking, offering job shadowing, internships and more. Please complete the brief form with your name, contact information, and areas of experience and expertise.

We are currently looking for alumni and friends of WNA who are living out their passions to come and speak to the sophomore class. These 70-minute question and answer sessions will allow our students the opportunity to learn how you were able to make a living doing what you love. Speakers from all walks of life are welcomed and appreciated. If you are interested in participating, please contact the Assistant Head of School and Dean of Academics, Garry Hallman, at ghallman@wna.org for more information. Sessions can be in person or through an online videoconference.

Succeed Program
West Nottingham Academy is excited to announce the launch of our innovative 5th Year Program, beginning with the Class of 2022! Succeed is designed for WNA to offer continued support, resources, and connections to our recent grads as they navigate the next phase of their journey. Our program is called "Succeed" because it means "to come after" and also "to achieve desired results".

Our core virtue we are focusing on this year is gratitude. By learning to be grateful for all that they have, our students will allow themselves to appreciate each other and life, open themselves up to new possibilities, and learn how to develop resilience in the face of obstacles. In reflection of this campus-wide initiative, we want to thank all of you for being part of our WNA community. We appreciate everything you have done for the School We Love!

Garry Hallman joined the WNA community in July of 2021 as the Academic Dean. In that capacity, he very quickly got up to speed and capably led all facets of teaching and learning at WNA. With the new bold vision for WNA as the beacon, Garry established a framework within which the faculty and staff collaborated to create an incredibly unique and inspiring academic program that will distinguish West Nottingham as the best leadership development academy in the world. A mentor to all faculty, Garry generously shares his time, wisdom, and organizational prowess in all areas of school life. For these reasons and more, Garry was promoted to Assistant Head of School. He will continue with his Academic Dean responsibilities.

Kacey Michelsen '99 joined the WNA community in August of 2021 as a teacher, dorm parent and coach. The role most of us see him play daily is of a passionate supporter of WNA. Having grown up and worked in independent schools for most of his life, he has been in many roles. When we had a vacancy in admissions this past fall, Kacey quickly learned a lot about enrolling students and capably filled that void. As the school launches the new academic plan and seeks continued growth, there is another void. Effective immediately, Kacey will be the Student Experience Coordinator. The position will evolve, but the primary focus is to facilitate a vibrant, robust, and exceptional student experience on and off campus. He will continue to support admissions as needed.

Music at Nottingham
Ameehan Muhammad joined the WNA staff in a full-time capacity as the Music Intern and dorm parent. Ameenah is a 2021 graduate of Lincoln University, earning a BA in Vocal Performance. At Lincoln, she was the trumpet section leader in both the LU Jazz Band and the LU Orange Crush Marching Band. She was the Soprano-Alto section leader, student conductor, choir manager and performer for the LU Concert Choir. This fall, Ameenah is teaching 9th grade Humanities Music, Music Theory and Music Performance, leading the WNA Choir, and assisting in the Admissions Office.

Million Reasons to Give - 40% there!
This past spring, Bill LaVan ’97 and Matt Pestronk ’96 announced their commitment to West Nottingham Academy by launching a $1,000,000 matching gift challenge! Since the launch of the Million Reasons to Give Campaign, friends and alums have generously given almost $400,000 in gifts! We want to thank those who have already made an impactful gift towards the match. Given this incredible opportunity, we humbly ask that you consider making a first gift or another gift. This is a historic opportunity for our school and community; we are grateful for your support along our transformational journey. Our goal is to unlock the match by the end of 2022!
We want to hear from you! Send us your updates, announcements and pictures. The Class Notes section is the perfect place to share what's new and exciting. Send the information to Scootie Lambert Dabbs '96 at sdabbs@wna.org
