Happenings in and around campus

Our Artist-in-Residence, Jake Ingram, held an art exhibit titled, “Hiraeth” in Gates Gallery from this month.
The artwork Jake exhibited were hand-quilted pieces with elements from his printmaking background including woodcut printed fabric as well as other techniques. Jake has been working in his studio on campus and teaching two studio art classes this spring. This show was a culmination of the work he has created while in residency as part of the Eric Fischl ’66 Artist-in-Residence Teaching Program.

Men’s Lacrosse has returned to West Nottingham Academy this fall and had a spectacular first season. These young men personified my vision for this program.... integrity, character, mental toughness, and fun. All the pieces are in place for the WNA Lacrosse Program to be a powerful force in the lives of young men for decades. In this first season we have developed a culture of hard work and grit that will carry our student athletes forward in whatever they do in the future. Nihil Sine Labore.
There is a bright future for the lacrosse program with 13 of the 17 players on the team being underclassmen. These young men have committed themselves to improving and have demonstrated this improvement every time they took the field, whether in training or matches. Their growth land level of toughness has grown exponentially.
An outstanding coaching staff with Micah Brownstein and Kacy Michelsen have added immense value to the program. Thank you to the school administration and department of athletics for supporting building the program. Thank you to the alumni who supported us for the necessary equipment and uniforms. Thank you to Cascade Lacrosse for the helmet donation. Look for big things from this program in the future.

Several weeks ago, French III students conducted interviews in their first French Job Fair. To prepare students used characters and professions provided by their teacher to create resumes and interview questions. In a subsequent class, they took turns being the employers and prospective employees. They practiced the protocol for introducing themselves in formal settings and answered tough questions about their skills and experience in the target language. Afterwards, they learned who was hired! Félicitations! - Karen Adams

The U.S. Constitution Seminar presented it’s major project of the semester, the First Monday in October project. The students reviewed cases currently before the Supreme Court and selected one to debate in a modified Supreme Court format. Purely by coincidence, they had selected the case of Dobbs v. Jackson, much in the news today. Lawyers Mesi Morris (Dobbs) and Icaro De Meira Lins (Jackson) presented their cases before Chief Justice Nik Avaras, who is expected to render his verdict early next week. - Rusty Eder

As part of the Earth Day festivities, the WNA Jazz Band stepped outside of their genre of music and presented a Beatles Review from the Senior Porch at Finley Hall. It was the WNA version for the Beatles Rooftop performance. The concert was broken into three components starting with Beatlemania preforming Love Me Do, Help, I Saw Her Standing There, I Want to Hold Your Hand, Hard Day’s Night, and And I Love Her. The second section of the performance focused on the Psychedelic era with Across the Universe, Eleanor Rigby, and While My Guitar Gently Weeps followed by the later years and Yesterday, Let it Be, and Hey Jude. The students worked hard to learn some intricate music and were able to overcome the difficulties of performing outside and battling the elements with grace and elegance. The student performers were Serene Wood, Larissa Mwiseneza, Jastin Molina, Toure Holder, Bahar Uysal, and Calvin Morris. Faculty who assisted were Ms. Trish Kuhlman, Mr. Rusty Eder, and Maestro Joseph Graziosi.
It has been a great year for the Jazz Band who participated in four major events this school year including Homecoming/Family Weekend, Winter at Nottingham, Winter Convocation, and Earth Day. This is mostly a group of freshmen and sophomores so expect great things in the coming years!

A Million Reasons to Give
It is with great passion and excitement that I share the news of a very special gift to our school. Bill LaVan '97 and Matt Pestronk '97 recently announced their commitment to West Nottingham Academy by launching a $1,000,000 matching gift challenge!
Deeply impacted by their West Nottingham Education, these two generous alumni, advisors, and most importantly, friends, have come together to give back by creating the Million Reasons to Give matching gift challenge. This not only magnifies their philanthropy but shows their true commitment to the future of our academics, students, and campus life. "I was the first in my family to have an education like this and I want to see our future have the same opportunity this school has awarded to me." said Bill LaVan.
We are thrilled to share this news with you and now you can have the opportunity to be part of our Million Reasons to Give campaign. We thank parents who have already donated and ask that you consider making a matching gift. This is an historic opportunity for our school and community, and we want you to join us on this transformational journey.
Your impact has already created a difference in the quality of life and the academic accomplishments of our young men and women. Imagine what can happen when your gifts are doubled? "We have more horsepower than we've ever had in terms of engagement and leadership, and I don't know if you can put a price on that but now, more than ever, is the time to double that impact" Matt shared during their announcement.
