Mountain Area Workforce Development Board meeting is TODAY, Tuesday, March 22 at 3:00 pm via zoom.
This board meeting featured a presentation from Jeff DeBellis, Director of Economic and Policy Analysis with the NC Department of Commerce, Labor & Economic Analysis Division (LEAD) about the region's labor market and economy. There was a focus on youth at the meeting from Henderson County Commissioner Rebecca McCall on the county's Disconnected Youth Task Force, Goodwill of Northwest NC on their NCWorks NextGen Youth Program, ApprenticeshipNC about Youth Apprenticeships and Jobs for NC Graduates.

Asheville metro unemployment rate at 3.1%, #2 lowest of any NC metro
|
|
Asheville metro now (as of January 2022) continues to have the #2 lowest unemployment of any NC metro at 3.1%. This rate is 2.8% points lower than the metro unemployment rate of 5.9% of one year ago. All counties in our region have unemployment rates below the state unemployment rate of 3.8%.

Compared to January 2021, the Asheville metro added 11,166 jobs and compared to December 2021 the Asheville metro lost 2,253 jobs.
Compared to January 2021, the Leisure & Hospitality sector added 13.1% (3,100 jobs) of the total jobs in the sector, Other Services added 3.4% (300 jobs) of the total jobs in the sector, Information added 11.8% (200 jobs) of the total jobs in the sector, Manufacturing added 3.8% (800 jobs) of the total jobs in the sector, Government added 2.8% (700 jobs) of the total jobs in the sector, Education & Health Services added 1.4% (500 jobs) of the total jobs in the sector. Mining Logging & Construction added 6.4% (600 jobs), Professional & Business Services added 1.6% (300 jobs), Financial Activities added 6.3% (400 jobs) of the total jobs in the sector, and Trade, Transportation & Utilities lost -1.4% (500 jobs) of the total jobs in the sector.
Asheville metro has the #5 greatest increase in jobs (3.0%) out of NC's 15 metros in the past year. Our region's job growth relative to other regions in NC appeared to be slowing as the Asheville metro has consistently been near the top of job growth until June 2021, January 2022 was a much better month for job growth in Asheville metro. The monthly labor market data releases are subject to adjustment and this may be a statistical aberration. Year over Year job growth by metro:
