Welcome to the February 2023 eNews

Dear Colleagues,

I hope the new semester is going well for you. In this issue of the newsletter, you’ll find reasons to congratulate your colleagues, celebrate our successes, and make time for professional development and enrichment.

This spring semester, we welcomed over 50 new international students and a higher-than-usual number of new transfer students. Their onboarding continues, but we are also planning training opportunities for the rest of our campus community.

We recently had Shorelight do a well-received training for faculty, and just had a marvelous CTL presentation by Mike Rust, Professor of Biomedical Engineering, on culturally responsive teaching. In addition, Student Affairs just welcomed Brian McGuinness as our new Director of International Programs. Please be on the lookout for additional professional development on this and other topics.

Before you know it, Commencement season will be upon us, so plan early to get us your regalia order!

Cheers,

Maria Toyoda

Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost

Recognition & Awards

Kudos to our newly-certified Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) instructors! Having completed an intensive 3-day training in January, our instructors will jumpstart WNE’s MHFA program on campus by teaching their own MHFA courses, which will help participants provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis.

Visit the Mental Health First Aid webpage to learn more and keep an eye out for upcoming course offerings.

Professional Development Opportunity

Grant Coaching from McAllister & Quinn

Are you interested in an opportunity to receive grant coaching from McAllister & Quinn? The Provost’s Office will be accepting applications from full-time faculty members who are willing to work over the summer of 2023 with Rachel Flammer and Sally White of McAllister & Quinn. This first cohort will be for up to five faculty members who will receive training in grant writing.

For those faculty members who are selected, the process will begin with an introductory webinar in May. The next step will be an individual interview with the consultants, in order to identify the top two or three grant possibilities that would be the best fit for the faculty member and their research interests. Then, throughout the summer, there will be five or six individual feedback sessions, during which Rachel and/or Sally will coach the faculty member in the grant application process and help them to develop a robust concept paper.

If you would like to be considered for this opportunity, please apply by March 24, 2023.  Faculty members will be selected by April 7, 2023.
