Welcome to the October 2022 eNews

Dear Colleagues,

How is it possible that we are already mid-semester?

As always, our talented team has produced an engaging newsletter packed with important and timely information, so I hope you peruse and enjoy the content.

For faculty, this is a quick reminder that we are accepting sabbatical applications to review for awards effective next academic year. Please follow your handbook’s procedures. Also, our new collaboration with research funding experts, McAllister & Quinn, has begun.

For everyone in the community, it is a good time to underscore two major efforts in which everyone will be involved. First, as you’ll recall, we had a survey and kick-off event last spring after commissioning the National Institute for Transformation & Equity to assist in coordinating our JEDI professional development and campus transformation efforts.

The second is a major new partnership with Shorelight, mentioned by President Johnson in the last couple of town halls. We have launched WNE Global, joining a network of other universities to market to, recruit, and prepare students from around the world to join our community in Springfield. This is a transformative moment for WNE. We are already seeing interest in some of our graduate programs that significantly outpaces our initial expectations. The ultimate success of WNE Global depends on you. It is our moment to shine as we welcome thousands of new members to our community over the next several years.

Cheers,

Maria Toyoda

Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost

WNE is now a partner with McAllister & Quinn, a DC-based firm that will be assisting us and faculty with accessing funding from foundations, federal and state grantors, and congressional appropriations. Two representatives were on campus recently to meet an initial group of chairs and faculty to begin an institutional review. Among the services they will provide are a regular newsletter to faculty regarding relevant grant opportunities, consultation for complex grants, professional development, and an annual institutional submission plan.

Faculty who are seeking help with federal grants can reach out to Jo Rodriguez via email who will be our primary campus liaison to McAllister & Quinn.

Consultation sessions will be scheduled later in the academic year for additional opportunities to talk about research and grant opportunities.

In the case of inclement weather, the gathering will take place in Campus Center A.

There is no agenda other than to greet fellow Golden Bears and perhaps make a new acquaintance or two from across campus. You are welcome to stop by anytime between 8:30 and 9:30 am and stay for as little—or long—as you like.

This new tradition is a great opportunity to celebrate the end of the week and the beginning of the weekend, in addition to starting your day in the company of friends and colleagues.
