Diocesan News

From Bishop Stephen Lane

Dear Fellow Servants,

My wife and I had the pleasure of visiting St Paul’s, Angola, this past Sunday. We enjoyed the beautiful drive along Lakeshore Drive, the golden knotty pine church, the Service of Reception, lunch and conversation with the members, and the opportunity to make a home communion with a longtime member. Of particular note was seeing the grounds of St Paul’s, the majority of which have been given over to Episcopal Community Housing. Currently there are several patio homes and, this summer, ground will be broken for a large, affordable, condominium building. It’s an impressive sight, the church backed by affordable housing.

What St Paul’s has done is a good example of ABCD, that is, Asset Based Community Development. “ABCD is a strategy for sustainable, community-driven change that focuses on existing local strengths, skills, and talents rather than deficits or needs. It empowers residents to drive development by mapping and mobilizing local assets, fostering connections, and creating resident-led change.” (ABCD Institute) It begins by examining what our local assets and strengths are and then asking how we might use those strengths for ministry. In St Paul’s case, the gift of land for a new church led to the decision to share the land for the benefit of others.

It’s often the case that, when we think of church ministries, our thinking is boxed in by the traditional ministries of the church: food pantries, hot meals, temporary housing, collecting warm clothing for the homeless, opening a youth center, etc. And there is nothing wrong with those ministries – except, if we can’t do them, we feel stumped for alternatives.

ABCD begins by asking where we are, who we are, what our gifts are, and, then, how we might use those gifts in the service of our communities. It makes each one of us an asset for ministry and builds on our local strengths, rather than bemoaning what we don’t have. ABCD is about building relationships and partnerships in our communities and working collaboratively to meet a shared need. It’s not about saying, “We want to have a food pantry.” It’s about saying, “These are our gifts, and this is what our community needs.”

So, perhaps what we have is money, and we can use that money to support other community organizations. Perhaps we have buildings or property we can share. St Stephen’s, Olean, has converted a parish building to a counseling center with six offices. Perhaps we have volunteers with time, who could work in the public schools. St Paul’s, Rochester, has a long time program of sending volunteers into the neighborhood elementary school to help children who struggle with reading. Perhaps we have meeting space that is largely unused during the week that could be shared with various groups. Many of our churches host AA and NA meetings. Some churches host public meetings or art exhibits or concerts.

None of this happens quickly. It takes time to build relationships, to network, to discern how our assets and our neighbor’s needs meet. It takes time to shape our love of God in Christ into service in God’s world. But the work is deeply rewarding and empowering. Everyone of us can be engaged in such work.

In this time when we are challenged by cultural changes and declining resources, Asset Based Community Development may be a means to find partners, to build capacity, and to strengthen both our communities and our churches. I commend it to you for your prayerful consideration.

Easter Blessings,

Bishop Steve

A Message from the Standing Committee about the Bishop Search Process

Dear Friends in Christ,

As published April 17th...We are entering a season of reset in our bishop search process.

This decision has not been made lightly. It comes from a growing recognition that, while much good work has already been achieved, the process itself needs strengthening—particularly in clarity, communication, shared expectations, and broad diocesan engagement. We believe this reset will allow us not simply to continue the work, but to do it well.

To read this letter in its entirety, please visit the BISHOP SEARCH PAGE of the Diocesan Website.

Diocesan Staff Schedule

Canon Cathy will be on vacation, enjoying some well deserved time away, and Shawn will be away at a conference. Although not ideal, both of these absences take place May thru Friday, May 8.

A Loss in the Diocese

The Rev. Dr. Ross Mackenzie, died last week on April 24, 2026. A service in celebration of Ross’s life will be held on May 11 at Westminster Canterbury in Richmond, VA.

In WNY, Ross was known primarily through his role as Director of Religion at the Chautauqua Institution from 1989-1999. Prior to that, for nearly 20 years he was Professor of Church History at Union Theological Seminary in Richmond Seminary.

On September 19, 1999, Bishop Bowman received Ross as a priest in The Episcopal Church. Ross served at St. Luke’s in Jamestown and at St. Paul’s in Mayville before returning to Richmond.

May 14 Remembrance

An Invitation from St. Philip's, Buffalo

I write to extend an invitation to members across the Diocese to join the community of St. Philip’s in a sacred time of remembrance and witness.

On May 14 at 2pm, we will gather at the Tops Market on Jefferson Avenue to honor the lives lost in the racial massacre in 2022 and to stand together in prayer, reflection, and solidarity. This solemn occasion calls us not only to remember, but also to recommit ourselves to the work of justice, healing, and reconciliation.

We invite you to stand with us in unity, particularly with those who continue to endure the pain and injustice of racial profiling and systemic inequities. Our presence together is a visible sign of our shared commitment to dignity, compassion, and the beloved community God calls us to build.

Clergy, lay leaders, and all faithful people are welcome. Your presence will be a meaningful expression of support and hope.

Please join us as we gather in remembrance and in faith.

Grace and peace,

Pastor Steve

Episcopal Indigenous Ministries speak of "living in right relationship with humanity and all of creation." What is meant by the theology of relationship? Have you ever reflected on your personal theology of relationship?

The WNY & NWPA Commission to Dismantle Racism & Discrimination invites you to join us May 28 from 7pm-8:30pm to explore these questions and more.

Pride Shield

Do you know that The Episcopal Church unveiled a Pride Shield in May 2024 in affirmation and celebration of The Episcopal Church’s LGBTQ+ members for churchwide use?

The design retains the upper-left blue corner of The Episcopal Church’s shield logo and incorporates elements of the traditional Pride flag as well as the Progress Pride flag and Philadelphia Pride flag. In their use of black, brown, pink, and light-blue diagonal lines, the latter two flags represent intersectional progress in acknowledging people who are often overlooked by the mainstream LGBTQ+ movement: communities of color; the transgender community; and the many thousands harmed by anti-LGBTQ+ policy—from those who lost their lives in the AIDS crisis of the 1980s and ‘90s, to those still disproportionately impacted today.

The Pride Shield is available for download HERE and a reminder that June is Pride Month.
