Hi friends and theatre lovers in WODL. I'm excited and honored to be starting my time as your president. I look forward to meeting people and seeing plays from our over 30 member groups over the next couple of years.
First, a few thanks and thoughts about some great people:
-
Thanks to those who finished their time on the Board at our Annual General Meeting in October: Past President Mona Brennan-Coles, Area VP Nadia Comeau, Secretary Pam Niesiobedzki-Curtis, and especially to our beloved Sue Perkins who is leaving after 30 years with the Board in many different leadership roles! Sue P gave a touching speech about passing the torch and how much WODL has meant in the past.
-
Big congratulations to Michael Grant of Elmira and Tricia Ward from Burlington who were made Life Members of WODL at the meeting.
-
And on a sad note, Pam Niesiobedzki-Curtis passed away late in October. So many people in so many groups have worked with Pam. You will see a tribute to her in this months news. She will be missed by her WODL family.
-
Welcome to our new Board members: Matt Walsh from Kitchener-Waterloo Little Theatre, Ted McLauchlin from Theatre Woodstock, Rob Blowey from Binbrook Little Theatre, Kim DiLello from Theatre Woodstock, and Debbie Deckert from Kincardine Little Theatre.
WODL Festival is coming back! It has been 6 long, long years since 2019, but now you can mark your calendars now for FESTIVAL 2025 in Leamington at their sparkling new Bank Theatre. There will be 3 plays on Thursday to Saturday May 15-17, with the in-, and out-of-Festival AWARDS BRUNCH on Sunday May 18. Watch for details in future news pages. The Leamington folks, headed by Festival Chair, Corey Robertson, are rolling out the welcome mat to their area and planning a great time.
Out-of-Festival Adjudications have begun! Between October 12 and April 19 productions will hear the insights and suggestions of our Preliminary Adjudicator, Trevor Smith-Diggins. He will also select the 3 groups who will perform in Leamington. His announcements will be made early in April. Our thanks to our Adjudications Chair, Ken Menzies, for all his work behind the scenes to plan this mammoth undertaking.
Minifest also returns! We’re so excited that Binbrook Little Theatre is hosting WODL Minifest 2025 on July 25-26. We’ll soon be announcing the script. (Check out our website for info on submitting your script for Minifest to use.) Then we look for groups who want to prepare a production of the script to bring to the Minifest Workshop day in Binbrook.
Minifest is a great opportunity event for new(er) directors and actors, and for groups that want to bring a play on the road with minimal cost and fuss. Did I mention the FUN we always have at Minifest? The last one was also in Binbrook 10 years ago, and it has become the stuff of legends ("Binbrook Rocks!") Spectators for the weekend are encouraged. Thanks to Bev Dietrich who will be Minifest Chair (“just for this year”, right, Bev?) and to all the keen planners from Binbrook.
See you here next month… and maybe at the theatre as well.
Cheers!

President's Report to the AGM
As I deliver my final report as President of the Western Ontario Drama League, I find myself reflecting on just how far we’ve come. It has been a journey marked by resilience, recovery, and remarkable creativity, especially in these past few years.
First and foremost, I must acknowledge my predecessor, Mona Brennan-Coles, who quickly stepped-up to skillfully navigate WODL through the unprecedented challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic. Those were undoubtedly stormy times for theatre, with productions halted, stages dark, and our beloved sense of community put on hold. Her leadership, alongside the tireless efforts of our members, ensured that WODL weathered the storm and remained a vital part of the theatre landscape in Southwestern Ontario.
The last two years, in contrast, have been our calm after the storm—a time of regrouping, rebuilding, and rediscovering the joy of live theatre. We’ve seen most of our member groups return to the stage, audiences eagerly filling the seats once again, and a renewed energy that only comes after overcoming such adversity. This period has allowed us to strengthen our foundations, reconnect with our communities, and reignite the passion that drives us all.
Through workshops, restructured Festivals, and other initiatives to support our member groups, WODL has continued to foster the incredible talent that makes community theatre thrive. We’ve come together not just as creators of art, but as supporters of one another, ensuring that no theatre group feels isolated or left behind. Whether it’s offering advice, sharing resources, or simply being a sounding board for new ideas, the spirit of collaboration within WODL has never been stronger. One need not look further than the addition of new member groups, an impending three-play Festival this May in Leamington, and the return of Minifest in Binbrook next July to know that WODL is alive and well, and continuing to strengthen its support of our membership.
As I prepare to step down from my role, I do so with immense pride in what we’ve achieved together. The strength of WODL lies in its people—people who believe in the power of storytelling, who give their time and energy to ensure that theatre remains accessible, vibrant, and alive in our communities. I have no doubt that this organization will continue to flourish, bringing joy and inspiration to audiences across Southwestern Ontario.
Thank you to all our member groups, volunteers, board members, and supporters. It has been an honor to serve as your president, and I look forward to watching WODL continue to grow and shine in the years to come.
With gratitude and best wishes,
Linda Lloyd-McKenzie

By Ken Menzies, WODL Adjudications Chair, adjudications@wodl.on.ca
I have now attended two adjudications by WODL’s traveling or pre-Festival adjudicator, Trevor Smith Diggins. He did well at both. The first, Elephant Man by the Odesa company performing at the Elgin Theatre in St. Thomas did not surprise me as I knew Trevor had won a best actor award in 1987 at Theatre Ontario for his performance in the lead role. His good adjudication at Binbrook along with his good performance in 2018-2019 as the pre-Festival adjudicator suggests strongly, he will continue to give good adjudications.
By Ken Menzies, WODL Adjudications Chair, adjudications@wodl.on.ca
While there are a few more possible entries, I have now drawn up an adjudication schedule.
Click here to obtain a printable adjudications schedule.
You are welcome to buy a ticket to any of these productions and stay for the public adjudication. I promise that if you do you will see a good show and then learn something about what you have just seen. The decision about whether you can attend the detailed adjudication is up to the group hosting the adjudication. Ask.
On October 20 a trial adjudication to see if WODL might be interested in hiring David Amour as a travelling adjudicator was held in St Marys. The production was a musical comedy, The 25th Annual Putman County Spelling Bee. Quite a few WODL board members attended and shortly after WODL has had a chance to look at their comments on his adjudication, we will make a decision about how suitable he is for hiring. I would like to thank St Marys Community Players for hosting this adjudication and particularly the cast and crew of the play for having a regular adjudication on Saturday evening and then attending a trial adjudication next day.

SAVE THE DATE!
Minifest is Back! Hosted by Binbrook Little Theatre the weekend of July 25 & 26, 2025.
What is Minifest? Up to six theatre companies perform the same one act play written specifically for Minifest. After the performance a workshop leader makes comments and leads discussion and workshops each play. Fun and learning for everyone!
Stay tuned for more information in the next newsletter.
Last Call Playwrights!
Minifest is back and we need you to write a play!
The play should be written for four to six actors, have a simple set, be one scene and run between 15 and 20 minutes. The play should offer opportunities for varied interpretations. The selection of the play is based on its suitability for a workshop environment that may involve new directors, technicians and actors.
The play will be selected by a Minifest play reading committee and will be approved by the WODL board.
Minifest will be hosted by Binbrook Little Theatre July 25-26, 2025.
Please submit to Minifest chair at bev@wodl.on.ca by December 1, 2024.

Just a reminder that if your theatre has an unusual history, has a new amazing accomplishment that you want to share, tried new ways to attract funding, volunteers, or audiences, we would love to feature you on Small Theatre at Large. Send us an email at laurel@wodl.on.ca.
Also, if your theatre wishes to host a workshop, let us know how we can help. There is a small fund available if you need assistance with costs.

In Memoriam Pamela Niesiobedzki-Curtis 10/25/2024
Pamela Niesiobedzki-Curtis MEd BFA(Hon), past Secretary, WODL Board of Directors.
I first met Pam in 2015 at Guelph Little Theatre: she was directing The Black Bonspiel of Wullie MacCrimmon, was 10 days from opening and needed help with the special effects.
Pam was remarkable for her energy, focus, charge-in-with-all-guns-blazing indomitable spirit, incredible volunteer appreciation and breadth of theatrical knowledge. She could be very demanding, extremely protective of her brood of actors, designers and technicians, and very hard to say 'no' to.
Pam was a director, playwright (as Roxanne Thornton), costume designer, production manager, passionate theatre supporter and eager volunteer. Her CV included choreographing 13 productions, performing in 19, producing/crewing 76 and directing 22 adult and 11 youth productions. Phew! She stepped in when volunteers were hard to find. She happily did thankless jobs, joined boards and ceaselessly promoted theatre in several jurisdictions including WODL and ACT-CO territories. She had a wide and deep knowledge of who was available for what, wherever she had practiced theatre. She also taught drama in schools for years since 1975.
Pam had received nominations and won awards in many jurisdictions, including WODL, winning Best Set Adjudicator's Award in 2019. She often thought outside the box, for instance using periaktoi for changing sets live before the audience, or calling for fireworks and explosions on stage (without using pyrotechnics). Sometimes her requests(!) couldn't be created, and she readily changed her focus to better possibilities.
Pam believed passionately in the performance and the audience, and would support anyone devoted to producing excellence on stage. As Production Manager at GLT, she often used her personal influence with playwrights to obtain rights to some remarkable plays. Pam served on the Board of WODL as Secretary from 2020 until this last summer. Pam passed on Friday, October 25th, at 72 years.
I think what I admire most about Pam is that she was not in theatre for her own glory; she was involved to make theatre glorious. I remember her for her spirit, her acerbity and her effectiveness.

Sue Perkins - Retiring Life Members Chair
By Sue Perkins, Retired WODL Life Members Chair
I have decided not to return to the Board of WODL after the AGM. I was briefly on the board soon after I came to London in 1978 - Marion Smith was President - but I could not handle all the travelling. I rejoined the Board in 1992 but had to resign in 1996 when President owing to my daughter’s failing health. I was invited to pick up the reins again in 1998 and have served in a number of different capacities ever since.
I have thoroughly enjoyed all those opportunities to get to know so many theatre people in Western Ontario. My husband Dave and I attended so many Festivals and saw so many amazingly good productions from all of you. Thank you for wonderful times.
So now it is time for the younger generation to step in and keep theatre alive and well in this region. Most of our groups survived Covid, and we were sad to see those who lost the battle. The adjudications, training and opportunities to network that membership in WODL provides are so important and have contributed to the excellence of theatre here. Please make sure it continues.
I wish you and your theatre companies much success and Break a Leg everyone.

Presentation of Honorary Life Memberships
By Sue Perkins, Retired WODL Life Members Chair
The Life Members’ Committee considered three names for the two Life Memberships
for 2024, and made their selection. Presenting those awards turned out to be a bit
more complicated than was expected originally and thus was delayed to the AGM for
presentation.
I am delighted to present Honorary Life Memberships to two very special people.
MICHAEL GRANT
| |
Sue Perkins and Michael Grant: Photo Bev Dietrich
Michael Grant has had a profound effect on many WODL groups and Festivals. Michael
is the go-to guy if you want to stage a Canadian play - written in Western Ontario and
originally produced here as well. There are a number of member theatres who have
taken the plunge to produce locally written plays because they have seen other groups
do it successfully and the playwright who has the greatest confidence from WODL
members is Michael Grant. He has set the trend. Michael has taught us that embracing
local writers will strengthen our product and effectiveness in the community. He has
never sought election to the WODL Board, nor been a Festival organizer yet many
would argue that he leads by example in a way that no-one else in WODL has ever
done.
Here’s one example: When Shorthanded was lauded and won awards, many
groups wanted to see a female version of this very Canadian play. Michael heard them
and answered the call. His plays are all a labour of love, and WODL is the main
beneficiary.
Thank you, Michael, for your support.
TRICIA WARD
| | |
Michelle Spanik, Tricia Ward, and Sue Perkins: Photo Bev Dietrich
Tricia has spent many years now on the board of WODL, serving as Secretary to
President Michelle Spanik and stayed for several years in that position, then taking over
the task of bringing WODL into the 21st Century technically. She has guided the board
members through the intracies of ZOOM meetings, the WODL email arrangements and
generally kept us in line. She also takes care of our newsletter and keeps us all up to
date with WODL happenings. WODL members appreciate everything you have done,
often behind the scenes, to keep us up to date in this digital world. Got a problem with
our email, getting on to Zoom, or getting the word out to our members? Contact Tricia.
In addition to all of this, Tricia is a talented, award winning Lighting Designer and has
been working with Theatre Burlington for a long time.
Thank you, Tricia for all you have done for us - we would be back in the Dark Ages
without you!

Message from Michael Grant
I’m truly honored and deeply touched by this recognition. I have to admit, I was completely caught off guard—rarely am I at a loss for words, but today is one of those rare moments.
In truth, it’s I who should be thanking and honoring all of you. When I wrote my first play, Hamish, I had no idea where to start. On my wife’s advice, I decided to email Norm Foster. To my surprise, he responded within fifteen minutes, suggesting I find a local theatre to produce it. So, I reached out to Elmira, and they agreed to take it on. After the production, Dennis Johnson adjudicated the play and spread the word about it to everyone who would listen. Then, a chance conversation between Deb Deckert and Shirley Steele led to its second production in Kincardine. From there, Bare Bear Bones and the rest of my scripts found their way across WODL thanks to word of mouth and the strong sense of community here.
To date, I’ve had almost forty productions, and the vast majority have been with the support of this WODL family.
When COVID hit, I had a script I wanted to hear read aloud, so the On-Line Script Reading series was born. It became so popular that we kept it going, and it continued through much of COVID to introduce new works and playwrights to this community. One of my proudest moments from that experience was when Lynda’s (Lynda Lloyd-McKenzie) first-ever play, Splitsville, was read. Just an hour after the reading, she texted me to say that a company had reached out, wanting to produce it. That’s what family does—we support each other.
As I’ve often said, it takes a village to raise a playwright. Thank you for welcoming me into your village, and for this incredible honor.
