Hi everyone. Fall is here and that means most theatres are kicking off another season of rehearsals and performances.
Minifest Workshop Weekend was a Blast!
Congratulations to the Thistle Theatre team for hosting a fun-filled Minifest in Embro early in August. You'll read more about this later in this newsletter. Over 100 people enjoyed the event. 5 theatre groups presented. Workshop Leader Heather May had just the right mix of irreverence, theatre skills and creative ideas to ensure we all had fun and learned something new about theatre. Thanks to the folks in Embro at Thistle who were pretty darn organized and who provided all the food for the Friday welcome party after the first 2 plays. Minifest Chair Jay Peckham and local Chair Lynda Pillon gave great leadership to make this event happen.
Minifest Workshop Weekend is an excellent way to informally meet and play with folks from across our region who are as crazy about theatre as you are! It is also a super way for a brand new director to get their feet wet with a smaller scale production.
Save the Date - for WODL's Annual General Meeting October 18, 2026
Our WODL AGM for all our member groups is set for Sunday afternoon October 18 . in Theatre Woodstock. The official invite will be sent to all your group delegates and our individual members shortly. Everyone is welcome. You can join us in person or on Zoom. If your group is thinking about entering an adjudicated play in-Festival this year, that meeting is a great chance to check out the Theatre Woodstock stage and auditorium.

Save the Date - Festival 2027 next May
Put this date on your calendar! Theatre Woodstock is excited to host the WODL Festival in 2027. Three plays will go on May 20-22, 2027 at Theatre Woodstock, followed by the annual in/out of Festival Awards Gala Brunch on Sunday May 23.
I Have a New Name!
At the end of August, I got married and now have a brand new surname for folks to get used to.
Sue Garner is now Sue Hazeleger. (pronounced with a hard g as in "leg")
My husband John and I both enjoy community theatre, and after being in a ton of shows together, playing husband and wife onstage, and even team directing a couple shows together 25 years ago, we think this lifetime commitment thing should be a breeze,

The Board of WODL are saddened to announce that Andre Paradis, WODL Awards chair, died this week. Andre was a life member of WODL and served on the board for several years. He was a valued long-time friend and supporter of WODL.

Minifest has been around for many years. It dates back to the 1980s, but for many reasons, it had to go away for a while. Last year we brought it back with great gusto, a wonderful turnout, and an amazing outcome. This year, however, saw what may be a few new records.
Let’s start with some thank-yous. First, we have to thank Bev Detrich, who has been the Queen of Minifest for as long as I can recall. This year we saw some changes in how this all comes together. Jay Peckham volunteered to chair the MiniFest Planning Committee (MPC), and a great team was assembled to help. Bev Deitrich, Shirley Marshall, Kim DiLello, and Lynda Pillon. Lynda and her team offered to host this year and did an amazing job. Thank you to the over thirty-five playwrights who submitted plays for consideration, from as far away as Australia!! We read nineteen local scripts, narrowed it to the five best, and ultimately selected Brad Fortman’s (Binbrook) play Jersey.
Finally, it all came together when Heather May offered to be our Workshop Leader, and after meeting her at the last MiniFest, a few conversations, and checking out her resume, we gladly brought her on board. What a tremendous job she did in offering insight and providing new perspectives for each show.
So, MiniFest 2026 went off … from an audience perspective, without a hitch!! We once again revived the Mash-up as well, and things got crazy! However, how do we truly measure success for this kind of thing? Did the participants have FUN? YES!! Did we each learn something over the course of the weekend? Absolutely. Does everyone want to do it again? Well, I'll leave you to ask our attendees that question, but I suspect we know the answer as well. Who doesn’t like seeing five versions of the same script?
We have yet to meet as the MPC to review the financial success of the event, but creatively there is little doubt that the weekend was an enthusiastic masterpiece!! Thank you to everyone involved. | Adjudications - New Theatre Season Begins | | |
As summer draws to a close, our theatres are preparing to return to regular schedules. While the stages are never truly dark during the summer months, this is the moment when our Travelling Theatre Adjudication season begins in earnest.
We currently have 12 adjudications scheduled for the fall term, running from September through December. I would like to thank Alexander Gallant for his flexibility, punctuality, and support throughout the scheduling process. His help made coordinating these adjudications remarkably easy.
This year, preparing the schedule was especially straightforward thanks to the new electronic form on the WODL website. Although not everyone may have been in favour of the change at first, it has proven to be an excellent improvement. The process is simple: complete the form, submit it, and the information comes directly to us. Thank you to everyone who embraced the new process and helped make it a success.
This season promises a wonderful variety of plays, creative choices from directors and producers, and the dedicated work of set designers, lighting technicians, actors, stage managers, and many others who bring each production to life.
Most importantly, it offers all of us the chance to learn, experiment, and continue pushing creative boundaries. Theatre is a process of discovery, and each new season gives us another opportunity to grow. Make your choices and do not look back!!

There is also exciting work happening behind the scenes. Recently, a group of adjudicators and WODL board members met for the first time to begin exploring the possibility of adjudication workshops.
The goal is to support people who are interested in becoming adjudicators by guiding them through a process that may eventually lead to a list of qualified adjudicators available to our theatres. It is an exciting idea, and we will share more information as it develops—so stay tuned.

Hi, folks and fellow Thespians! Well, it's an exciting time to be involved with WODL: we have 30 active community theatre groups in Southwestern Ontario, mounting excellent productions on stage - so wonderful our adjudicators despair of selecting just the one to receive an award in specific categories, so many are deserving - gaining community support and audiences (at last!), giving workshops and participating in Festival.
And recently WODL, via Binbrook Little Theatre and Thistle Theatre and a whole crowd of enthusiasts, has revived the workshop superb: Minifest! A two-day affair featuring one script, one setting, and five different interpretations, each exposed to the detailed examination and workshopping by one of WODL's renowned Adjudicators. I was at Minifest in Embro: such a buzz, such excitement, and of course, WODL's famed party atmosphere. I noticed that Minifest 2026 was fully subscribed to within days; there is an obvious appetite for this opportunity.
Which leads me to my musing (I know, anything before “but” is superfluous...) Our theatre groups collectively are still rather fragile, financially. Time was, Minifest could be supported by any one of a number of host groups; today that's a stretch. So, WODL has pitched in with support for the script and the adjudicator for our two recent Minifest revivals, which helps the host groups realize some fiscal return for their hospitality.
The problem is: I don't have a source of revenue dedicated to workshops and Minifest. WODL has managed the last two mostly because we have eked out some surplus from our investments. That's too much like relying on gambling for household expenses: it's not fiscally responsible.
I have proposed to the WODL Board that we offer sponsorships for Workshops and Minifest, the sponsors to be recognized in the program at these events, as well as at our year-end Gala. Sponsorships will be $150 each, and I hope to see at least 9 more (Anne and I have the first). WODL is already famed for our Festival and the adjudications, and for really intense conversations. Let's make Workshops, and Minifest, another feather in our caps!

Amid the Great Depression, the brothers' ice harvesting livelihood in Kempenfelt Bay is melting away due to the advent of refrigeration, only to further line the pockets of their employers. Desperate to claim what is rightfully theirs, these honest workers turned reluctant captors will stop at nothing to bring their greedy boss to a final reckoning.

Goderich Little Theatre
First show of GLT’s 2026-27 season is Dracula, running October 22-25, 29-31 and November 1.
Ordinary Magic, theatre classes for young people, is holding registration September 3-5 for returning students, and September 12 at 9:00 AM for new registrants.
As we all know, we couldn’t run our shows without the dedication of our volunteers. GLT will be holding a Volunteer Appreciation night on September 25 at 7:00 PM. Set builders, show crews, ushers, bar help, ticket sales, anyone who has made the past season a success with their time and talents is welcome.

And just like that, summer is over and our theatres are back at it - and there is a lot happening across Essex, Kent and Lambton!
September 18 is apparently the day to open a show in our area. In Sarnia, the Imperial Theatre stage comes alive with Beetlejuice Jr., running September 18 & 19.
Meanwhile, down Highway 40 and across the county lines, The Bank Theatre in Leamington opens Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman the very same night. Directed by Dean Valentino, the production runs September 18-20 and 25-27. I may be slightly biased on this one since I’ll be onstage playing Charley - so come say hello!
The Bank doesn’t get much time to catch its breath before turning things considerably lighter with Farce of Habit, the sequel to Farce of Nature. Directed by Mark Ribble, the Jones Hope Wooten comedy runs October 30–November 1 and November 6–8.
Then November gives us something I don’t think we see very often: two Come From Aways within about 80 kilometres of each other!
Theatre Kent gets there first, bringing Gander to the Chatham Capitol Theatre November 12–14, directed by Brock MacKenzie. One week later, Windsor Light Music Theatre opens its production at the Chrysler Theatre, running November 20–29.
Two companies. Two productions. One fantastic Canadian story. I’m really looking forward to seeing how each group makes it their own.
And Windsor Light isn’t slowing down. They’ve already announced Les Misérables for Spring 2027. That should certainly give our WODL musical fans something to look forward to!
It’s great to see the calendars filling up again. Drama, farce, youth theatre and two major musicals there are plenty of reasons to get out and support some live, local theatre this fall.

Stage lighting technology is evolving quickly. And many of the technologies changing what's possible aren't necessarily brand new. They're simply becoming more accessible and practical for theatres, schools, and performance spaces of all sizes.
Join us this Tuesday, September 08th, for the Resource Stage season launch as we explore four technologies opening up new possibilities for lighting control, connectivity, and creativity:

- Wireless DMX
- Wireless Battery-Powered Lighting
- Pixel Lighting Control
We'll break down how these technologies work, where they fit, and what they can bring to your lighting system.
