HELLO EVERYONE

As promised I am back with some of the work from Matthew Harris's course that he taught here, at the end of August. It was a packed course with set activities, all building one on the other and then a day of personal development. There were 11 students on the course which meant there was a place for me to work as well and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

On arrival Matthew set up a still-life in the centre of the room and all of the initial activities and work produced stemmed from this still life.

The still-life seemed very complicated at first glance but Matthew was able to lead us through the different exercises by focussing on a certain aspect for each drawing activities.

Using a terracotta coloured ink, we began by just drawing the edges of the broken white painted, ceramic flower pots, and then added details in black ink, pencil, graphite etc on top, referencing the network of structures in the still-life. These drawings were worked onto crumpled wall-paper lining adding extra texture.

A thin layer of watered down white emulsion paint was then added as in images above. These same processes were then applied to different fabrics, some of which Matthew had prepared for us with size.

Our next activity was 'drawing with collage', again working from the still-life and working either on a clean sheet of paper or on top of previously worked pieces.

We now had a body of prepared papers and fabric to start working with and had to put something of ourselves back into the work. In doing this we had to respond to a list of words from Richard Serra's list of verbs that he employs with his own work. Some of these verb names, selected by Matthew were numbered. We rolled a pair of dice to help us decide on the verb that we we worked with for the remainder of the course. Here are some of the works in progress.

A fabulous course, with fabulous students and of course with a fabulous tutor. Thank you Matthew and all.

Matthew will be back next Spring, the last weekend in April, so watch out for details as they become available. You do not want to miss out.

Her workshop will be very experimental and she is well known for her innovative and contemporary approaches to Goldwork Embroidery.

Anyone with a love for stitch could be considering this thoughtfully prepared course.

Hanny is no novice in her field of Embroidery. In 2023 she was awarded the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust Award, and was the winner of the inaugural Sanderson QEST Rising Star Craft Award 2024. She teaches goldwork nationally and internationally. How lucky we are to have her come here to the studio to teach.

WILLIAM SCOTT

An on-line course

30th Sept Intro ~ followed by 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th Oct

William Scott is another one of my favourite artists who gained notoriety in the 1950's with his abstract paintings of still-lifes in which he reduced his subject matter right down to a few basic lines. He valued the importance of 'space' in his compositions and it is these elements that we shall explore in paper, cloth and stitch.
