place/plane | Adam Crowley
Adam Crowley makes paintings in the landscape and still life genre. His work explores concepts of beauty, fear, sadness, hope, frustration, deep-time, and tradition. Originally beginning his photo based work with the idea of removal of the self and monastic transcription of imagery, he has recently come to realize the necessity of beauty and the importance of dialogue between artist and environment. When he isn’t painting, he works at an Art Museum and helps raise a sustainable food garden with his wife and daughter. He lives in Kansas City, Missouri.

Meet KCAC Member
SUSAN FERGUSON
"I’m Susan Ferguson. I’m a visual artist. I started handweaving in 2014. In 2019 I turned my artistic focus on the environment, exploring the colors, shapes and textures of nature through fiber, textiles and encaustic painting. I try to use natural materials whenever possible and whenever relevant, although sometimes a length of polyester or polyethylene or a found object speaks louder than a piece of woven wool or cotton.
| | |
I experiment with combinations of fiber, rope, yarn, paper, encaustic paints, watercolor, wood and copper to produce layered and textured artworks that are usually brightly colored. The experimentation aspect of my creative process is as important as completion of the finished piece because it informs my understanding of the forces of the components I use. Much of my creative effort is done at a simple rigid heddle loom, where I weave mostly with my fingers rather than with manmade tools. When weaving on a larger scale, I use a primitive handmade oversized hanging loom of the type used thousands of years ago. I also use the techniques of sewing, knitting, felting, stitching, quilting, papermaking, fabric manipulation, sculpture and collage to express ideas and impressions about the natural world in which we live. My work is intuitive; I create without sketches, illustrations and guides. My artwork is intentionally messy and disheveled, reflecting a degree of chaos often found as nature cycles. My goal as an artist is to encourage audiences to reflect on their own connections and experiences with environments they have known and to consider ways to preserve and sustain such places for future generations." | |
