Closing The Cancer Care Gap
Dear Friends,

On February 4th, the cancer community came together for 'World Cancer Day' a global initiative aimed at creating greater awareness of cancer and inspiring action in better preventing, detecting and treating the disease.

This year, and for the next three years, World Cancer Day's theme is centered on the issue of equity. The campaign theme 'Close the Care Gap' brings attention to the lack of equity in cancer care, the barriers that exist for many people in accessing services and receiving the care they need, thus potentially reducing a person’s chance of surviving cancer.

Thesecondopinion's free, comprehensive consultations, close the care gap by helping cancer patients overcome the barriers to obtaining access to information about their disease and treatment options. Our service provides cancer patients with the same access to medical resources as individuals who have broader access to medical care, in their language and at their level of understanding.

We do this by offering cancer patients the opportunity to have our independent, board certified, cancer specialists carefully review their medical records, images and pathology, and communicate directly as a committee with the patient and family and/or friends. Through this dialogue the physicians answer questions directed by the patient, confirm the diagnosis and provide a detailed explanation of the extent of the disease and treatment options. With this approach, we are able to provide patients with the information necessary to manage their disease, improve their well-being and help them move forward in their treatment.

A second opinion is often critical to someone diagnosed with cancer, because it provides such important tools as clarity and confidence that can save or improve lives. It can help them understand how the potential benefits of a treatment(s) compare to the effects on their quality of life as well as prognosis. Highlights from ASCO Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium
By Norman Cohen, M.D., Volunteer Panel Physician
Reviewed by - Joni Venticinque, Patient Advocate, and Howard Kleckner, M.D., Medical Director
(This symposium was held January 20 to 22, 2022, in San Francisco. ASCO is a specialized oncology event that offers the opportunity to exchange the latest research and science in the prevention, diagnosis, and multidisciplinary treatment of gastrointestinal cancers.)

In January, I participated as thesecondopinion’s volunteer medical oncologist for a virtual second opinion for three patients. One patient presented with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (IHCC). IHCC is a type of liver/bile duct cancer. The patient’s cancer had a mutation in the Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptor gene (FGFR2). A mutation is when a DNA gene is damaged. The FGFR2 gene provides instructions for making a protein that is involved in an important process of cell growth, division and maturation. Coincidentally that week I was attending the ASCO GI Symposium and one of the presentations was focused on Hepato Biliary tract cancers! It was very helpful in my discussion with the patient.
