Professors Nicole Davi, environmental science, Marianne Sullivan, public health, and Lilian Milanés, community and social justice studies, have been awarded nearly $300,000 to study access to reliable and safe drinking water and recreational waterways with a focus on equity in access to these resources. Students will participate in research with all three professors.
On November 19, Provost Powers, an avid hiker, will hike a trail right here in the University’s backyard—to the 800-foot summit of High Mountain in the adjacent High Mountain Park Preserve—in support of his other passion: raising awareness about, and financial support for, first-generation college students.
The findings are included in a comprehensive economic impact study released by the New Jersey Association of State Colleges and Universities (NJASCU), of which the University is a member. “Beyond our economic footprint, NJASCU institutions are offering cutting-edge programs in strategically important industries, increasing access and opportunity, and putting students on the path to good-paying jobs and upward social mobility,” says President Richard J. Helldobler, who is chair of the NJASCU presidents.
The University is one of 27 colleges and universities across the country selected to join the first #RealCollege Institutional Capacity-Building Cohort (ICBC) of the Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice, an initiative designed to focus on how colleges can support the basic needs of vulnerable students.
Dr. Overdorf, a professor of kinesiology for 45 years and the founder and highly successful coach of the University’s women’s tennis team, was recognized for her advocacy for women’s sports and her generous donation to the University that will provide increased support and development opportunities for the tennis program.
NBA player Michael Kidd-Gilchrist shared his very personal story as a person who stutters with communication disorders and sciences graduate students in a class taught by Professor Jim Tsiamtsiouris, where he emphasized the importance of the trusted relationship between a person who stutters and their speech language pathologist.
Adam Derner '14, baseball; Ryan Gresik '14, football; Mike Guadango '11, baseball; Michelle Marabondo '13, women's soccer; Toby Barboza, support staff (posthumous); and the 1997-98 Pioneer women's basketball team are the newest inductees into the William Paterson University Alumni Association Athletic Hall of Fame.
