WPH Will Miss You
Viktor Cicman our Lead Data, and Project Consultant is leaving to pursue a new journey
|
"As Workforce Planning Hamilton enters this new and exciting fiscal year, April 8th, 2022 will be my last day here at WPH. I have accepted a position at the Conference Board of Canada.
I wanted to thank Workforce Planning Hamilton and the many community partners I have worked with over the past 9 years. I began my work with the planning boards in Grand Erie and moved to Hamilton in 2014. It has been an incredible journey and allowed me to meet so many people and grow into my role. I had the chance to work with many partners and I have learned so much from everyone. Helping the community find jobs have always been my guiding principle and I am sure the community will continue this as Hamilton recovers from the pandemic.
Although I am starting a new journey, I hope to stay in touch with everyone. Hopefully, our paths will cross. Thank you again to everyone in Hamilton for helping me grow. Hamilton will always be in my heart." Viktor Cicman

The Local Labour Market Plan 2021
|
Workforce Planning Hamilton has created a report to provide an update on the state of the local labour market in 2021 and reflect on preliminary insights for 2022. Hamilton’s labour market has faced an unprecedented impact in the last two years due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. As the pandemic ensued, a complex and changing narrative followed, making it difficult to describe and predict the outcome.
*The report is available in English and French Language.

Skilled trades should be promoted as a first-choice career path
|
Jobs in the skilled trades and construction industry offer phenomenal careers for today’s youth, recent immigrants and those seeking a new career, but up until recently, were looked at as a career of last resort.
The promotion of careers in the skilled trades and construction has increased, in part due to greater government support at both the provincial and federal levels, but also due to changing career and workforce trends due to COVID-19. The pandemic has resulted in what some are calling the “Great Resignation,” a growing trend of people quitting their jobs or shifting careers completely. During COVID-19 shutdowns, construction was deemed essential, so many skilled trades workers in construction were able to keep working. This was also the case with other industries that employ a considerable number of skilled trades (e.g. manufacturing).
One reason the skilled trades – specifically construction – should be promoted as a first-choice career path is the demand for workers. According to BuildForce Canada, in Ontario alone, over 92,000 construction workers will retire by 2030. Considering the projected volume of work today, the industry will need to hire, train and retain more than 100,000 additional workers by the end of the decade – including workers from traditionally underrepresented groups, women, black, Indigenous and people of colour.

Employees Want Additional Opportunities for Career, Skills Development
|
The Great Resignation of the past two years has HR departments striving for solutions to retain and recruit key workers. Some are finding that the way to solve this challenge is to start by improving the employee experience—specifically, their career and skills development.
Joe Dusing, senior director of learning and development for Paylocity, urged HR practitioners not to get tied up in the term "Great Resignation."
"You shouldn't be doing anything about the Great Resignation," he said. "You should be doing something about employee experience. Every potential employee wants to know two things: 'What are the skills that I need?' and 'What are the programs that you have in place to support me?' If you don't have answers, they likely won't want to work for your company.
"At this point, everyone wants to go to the next level and be informed of how to do it," he added. "You need to have this structure and opportunity in the first place to attract talent."
