Preparing students for a rapidly changing world of work
|
The rapid emergence and growth of new professional areas and fields are changing how we approach careers. Therefore, graduate students and postdocs need to be versatile and agile when preparing for their future professional lives. While the current labour market in the United States—beyond traditional tenure-track faculty jobs—is favourable for advanced-degree candidates, navigating and succeeding in a rapidly changing professional landscape will require a willingness to learn and apply new skills.
In other words, the concept of a growth mindset—the idea introduced by Carol Dweck that talent can be developed through hard work, good strategies and input from others—is crucial for professional success. How can grad students and postdocs best apply that mindset? How can they identify, assess and develop desired and durable skills in emerging professions that will lead to career preparation and success?

Helping youth succeed in their first professional job
|
Key points
- Youth, rather than being seen as inexperienced, can be a career launcher...if used judiciously.
- Beware of jobs demanding that you pay lots of dues. Too often, they're undue dues.
- Meetings offer a chance to strut your stuff without appearing self-aggrandizing. Tact is key.
- Develop a niche at the intersection of the market and you. Use your favourite communication vehicle(s) to build your brand.
This post begins with a first-person report from "Jeremy," a composite of my clients' experiences. It embeds four important practices, and after "Jeremy's" report, I call them out.

The AIDS Network and Interval House Hamilton join community partners to host a celebration to mark International Women's Day.
About this event:
once again, things will look a little different this year, but we are still very excited to come together to celebrate the achievements of women in our community and add our voice to the call for greater gender equity in our society. This year's International Women's Day theme is #BreakTheBias. We are asking the community to imagine a gender-equal world.
There will be great speakers and entertainment. All are welcome, let's celebrate together!
