WPL Has a New Spanish Language Collection!

We're proud to announce that the library is in the process of building a Spanish Language Collection. As part of this initiative, we'll be ordering books in Spanish for both adults and children. We’ve received the first 38 fiction titles for adults, and you will start seeing more and more of them on the shelves over the next few months. The collection is intended as a resource for native Spanish speakers and learners alike. Look out for the purple spine labels marked Spanish/ Espanol. If you're interested in taking a look at what we have so far, please ask a staff member for help. We invite you to come on by the library to check them out!

Check Us Out!

The Wallkill Public Library is thrilled to announced we're getting a bit of a facelift! We've contracted with CertaPro Painters to have our exterior repainted. The paint might still be a little wet as of the time of this announcement but check us out and let us know what you think of the new paint job!

A Letter from the Director

Dear Patrons,

It's with more than a little sadness that I am announcing the departure of our Children's Services Coordinator, Miss Michelle. Alas, Miss Michelle has accepted another opportunity elsewhere, and it is the sincere wish of me and the rest of the staff at the Wallkill Public Library that she receives all happiness and success in her next endeavors. Thank you, Michelle, for your hard work, dedication and infectious enthusiasm. I invite all of our patrons to express their goodwill and memories of Miss Michelle for all she's done for the library and community over these past few years and their very best wishes to her moving forward.

These changes mean that the library will be making adjustments to scheduled children's programs while we go through the process of finding a new Children's Services Coordinator. Please check the Wallkill Public Library Events Calendar regularly (found here: https://wallkillpubliclibrary.libcal.com/calendar/wpl_programs_events) to see what programs we'll be moving forward with during the search. We'll make every effort to inform registrants of upcoming changes as we make our adjustments and apologize for the inconvenience these changes might cause.

Rest assured, we still have a fantastic summer ahead of us filled with Summer Reading programs and events! We look forward to another great summer with all of you.

Sincerely,

Dan Perkins, Library Director

Book Clubs

Adult Fiction Book Club's June selection

The Adult Fiction Book Club will be taking May off. Their next meeting will be on Tuesday, June 17, 2025 at 3:45 p.m. to discuss Goodbye, Columbus by Philip Roth.

"The title novella, Goodbye, Columbus, the story of a summer romance between a poor young man from Newark and a rich Radcliffe co-ed, is both a tightly wrought tale of youthful desire and a satiric gem that takes aim at the comfortable affluence of the postwar boom. Here and in the stories that accompany it, including "The Conversion of the Jews" and "Defender of the Faith," Roth depicts Jewish lives in 1950s America with an unflinching sharpness of observation."

If you would like to attend virtually, contact Kim O'Sullivan at kosullivan@rcls.org.

Saturday Morning Book Club's June pick

The Saturday Morning Book Club will hold their next meeting on Saturday, June 28 at 10:30 a.m. They'll be discussing Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld.

Sally Milz is a sketch writer for "The Night Owls," the late-night live comedy show that airs each Saturday. With a couple of heartbreaks under her belt, she’s long abandoned the search for love, settling instead for the occasional hook-up, career success, and a close relationship with her stepfather to round out a satisfying life.

But when Sally’s friend and fellow writer Danny Horst begins dating Annabel, a glamorous actor who guest-hosted the show, he joins the not-so-exclusive group of talented but average-looking and even dorky men at the show—and in society at large—who’ve gotten romantically involved with incredibly beautiful and accomplished women. Sally channels her annoyance into a sketch called the "Danny Horst Rule," poking fun at this phenomenon while underscoring how unlikely it is that the reverse would ever happen for a woman.

Enter Noah Brewster, a pop music sensation with a reputation for dating models, who signed on as both host and musical guest for this week’s show. Dazzled by his charms, Sally hits it off with Noah instantly, and as they collaborate on one sketch after another, she begins to wonder whether there might actually be sparks flying. But this isn’t a romantic comedy; it’s real life. And in real life, someone like him would never date someone like her...right?

With her keen observations and trademark ability to bring complex women to life on the page, Sittenfeld explores the neurosis-inducing and heart-fluttering wonder of love, while slyly dissecting the social rituals of romance and gender relations in the modern age.
