Worcester Cultural Plan Survey

Worcester is updating its Cultural Plan to understand how the arts and cultural community has changed in recent years and to identify priorities for the future. Arts and culture can include visual art, music, theater, dance, literature, history and heritage, festivals, public art, cultural traditions, creative businesses and other ways people create, celebrate and connect.

 
 

Author Talk with Dr. Pria Anand: The Mind Electric

Curious about the mysteries of the brain? Join neurologist and author Pria Anand at the Worcester Senior Center on Wednesday, October 21 to learn about her book, The Mind Electric, and the fascinating stories our brains can tell. Presented by Dementia Friendly Worcester, Worcester Talking Book Library, and Worcester Senior Center. Registration is required at 508-799-1232.

 
 

National Grid Customer Assistance

On Wednesday, October 21 at the Main Library customers will have the opportunity to speak directly with the National Grid team about available assistance programs, energy efficiency offerings, and ways to better manage their energy usage.

Come celebrate 70 years of the Friends of the Worcester Public Library! The Friends have been helping WPL thrive, supporting library programs, fundraising, volunteering, and championing the library and the community it serves.


Come meet the volunteers behind all that good work at our Friends of WPL Social on Saturday, October 17, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Sol Rune, 19 Harrison Street in Worcester.

Gardening, Local History, and Ghost Stories

Explore, learn, and connect through these engaging adult programs at the Main Library! Start the month with Urban Gardening, where you'll learn how to grow flowers, herbs, and vegetables in small spaces. Next, discover the stories of women who built careers in Worcester's corset industry with A Proper Fit: Women at Work in a City of Corsets, a book talk with author Anne Marie Murphy. Finally, explore the unexplained with Ghosts! Strange Tales from 13 Years of Paranormal Investigating, featuring stories and lessons from paranormal investigator Dr. Joanna MacGugan. Stamp Carving, Cooking, and Gothic Crafts

Teens can get creative, learn new skills, and make something to take home this month! Visit the Burncoat, Goddard, Roosevelt, or Tatnuck Magnet Branches for Spooky Stamp Carving, where you can learn to carve your own spooky linoleum stamp. At the Main Library, join local home chef Victoria Myers for Cooking for Teens, featuring simple meals and desserts you can make at home. Then, get crafty at the Great Brook Valley Branch with Teen Crafternoon: Gothic Diamond Painting Magnets, where you can create your own gothic-style magnet. Music, Stories, and Spooky Drawing

There’s plenty of fun and creativity happening for kids at the Main Library this month! Kids ages 4–12 can explore the world of music during Musical Petting Zoo with Springfield Symphony Orchestra, a hands-on opportunity to hear, learn about, and play orchestral instruments. Families with young children can sing, dance, and enjoy magical stories during Cuentos & Cantos: A Bilingual Storytime Fiesta!, celebrating Hispanic culture through music, movement, and fun. Then, get into the Halloween spirit with Spooky Doodles Workshop, where cartoonist Cara Bean will help kids ages 8–12 create silly monsters and spooky characters. Crafting, Creepy Crawlies, and Creating

There’s plenty of hands-on fun happening at our branches this month! Kids ages 5–11 can get creative at the Great Brook Valley Branch with Bag Decorating, making a spooky Halloween candy bag or a special bag for their library books. At the Frances Perkins Branch, young explorers can discover Spooky Bones and Creepy Crawlies with Professor Bugman, featuring real animal bones, skeletons, and some seriously big bugs. Kids ages 6–12 can also build, design, and create something new each month with Mobile Makers at the Burncoat, Goddard, Roosevelt, and Tatnuck Magnet Branches. Libby and Lilly on the Road


Mobile Library service is provided to patrons Monday through Friday on a four-week rotation. Most items not found on the Mobile Libraries may be requested through the online catalog, and the requested items will be delivered to you at any of the Mobile Library stops. Both Mobile Libraries, Libby and Lilly, are ADA-compliant with wheelchair access. In addition to the regular schedule, Libby and Lilly are often invited to attend special events throughout the city.

Monthly Reminders

The Worcester Public Library will be closed on Monday, October 12 in observance of Indigenous Peoples' Day.


The Library will also have reduced hours for Staff Development Day on Thursday, October 22. The Main Library, Frances Perkins Branch, and Great Brook Valley Branch will be open 2-5:30 p.m.
