Technical Difficulties Caused By Studio Upgrades
You may have noticed some technical difficulties on our airwaves and web stream over the past week. These unplanned issues are, in part, a result of our long-planned studio upgrades. We apologize for any inconvenience and we are working to minimize future disruption.
The work currently underway at our primary broadcast studios in Madison is the most significant upgrade we've made in decades. We are rebuilding the backbone of our studios and moving from copper-wire analog audio to digital audio. The result will not just mean better service for listeners around the state, it will also provide our reporters, producers and engineers more options for recording and delivering content.
Thank you for your patience. Look for service alerts and updates about the project at wpr.org/rebuild.

A Big Time Benefit For 91 Jazz Street
We give a nod to the architects of the University of Wisconsin-Superior's Holden Fine Arts Center: any lesser structure would surely have had its roof blown off during the rollicking concert which took place in its Manion Theater on Feb. 28 by the Big Time Jazz Orchestra.
The ensemble, comprised of local luminaries and music faculty from Twin Ports colleges, honored female jazz composers during the concert which benefited our show
91 Jazz Street
which can be heard 7 to 10 p.m. weekly, Monday through Friday on 91.3 FM KUWS Superior.
We recorded the concert. If you'd like a copy, please email us at KUWS@uwsuper.edu.

'The Alabama 35' Airing Statewide On March 31

A
notable episode of "People of Color"
called "The Alabama 35" will be shared statewide over Wisconsin Public Radio's Ideas Networks at 4 p.m. on March 31, 2019. The hour-long documentary chronicles the Twin Ports delegation to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, also colloquially known as "The National Lynching Memorial."
The travelers included co-founders of Duluth's
Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial
, the nation's first prominent memorial at the site of the crime. Duluth's police chief Mike Tusken is the great nephew of the woman whose false accusation led to the horrific triple lynching which the memorial commemorates. He was a member of the delegation. Tusken's participation symbolizes the ultimate act of healing and reconciliation.
Narrated by "People of Color" host Henry Banks, and produced by Banks and Robin Washington, the statewide broadcast of "The Alabama 35" may be heard regionally on KUWS 91.3 FM Superior and WUWS 90.9 FM Ashland.

Lew Martin Passes At 102
-
And Seven Decades On The Air
A Twin Ports broadcasting legend who covered Presidents Truman and Kennedy in a storied career before retiring at age 66 - only to spend the next 30 years on the Douglas County Board of Supervisors, while also still gracing Wisconsin Public Radio's airwaves - has passed on.
Born in Superior in 1917,
Lew Martin
, (pictured right), matriculated at Superior State Teacher's College (now UWS) in 1936 when he was bitten by the radio bug. He joined local station WEBC before moving to Eau Claire's WEAU, eventually returning to Superior's WDSM and its Duluth sister station WDSM TV (now KBJR). In his later years, Martin became a fixture on "Radio Superior." The KUWS old-time radio show made its debut in 1999 with a weekly visit back to the earlier days of Martin's career.
In a Facebook post, Superior Mayor Jim Paine noted he was one of the area's youngest elected officials and Martin one of the oldest: "At 102 years old, he left us too soon. Goodbye old friend."
