Join us for our Annual Partner Celebration on Wednesday, May 28th from 5:00-7:00pm at Bentley University. This event brings together over 200 guests from the city's educational, municipal, and business sectors to showcase WPY’s partnerships that powerfully impact Waltham youth. We will feature a short, inspiring program, including a student speaker and keynote speaker. Funds raised from the event are an important part of our annual budget, enabling WPY to run programs for over 600 local students per year.

Career Exploration & Training (CET)

Connecting students to life-altering career development opportunities through meaningful paid internship experiences.

This month, the Career Exploration & Training team began to wrap up school-year programming while simultaneously preparing for our signature Summer Internship Program.

Highlights of our school-year internship programming include Spanish for Educators, where three WPY high school interns supported both beginner and intermediate Spanish classes for Waltham Public Schools educators. Interns were especially excited that their own Waltham High School Principal, Darrell Braggs, was one of their students this spring!

The Teen Mental Health Alliance (TMHA) internship students are also preparing for their end-of-year community project. The TMHA interns are working together to host Families for Depression Awareness, a Waltham-based mental health organization, for an event on May 14th at Waltham High School. This "Minds Matter" event is geared toward Waltham High School students and aims to destigmatize mental health conversations and questions.

The CET team has also stayed busy this month with preparations for WPY's Summer Internship Program. Interviews will conclude in the coming weeks. Thank you to the incredible Bentley University Career Success Institute mentors, WPY Board of Directors, and WPY staff for working together to interview more than 100 students! Students will learn of their final Summer Internship Program placements by the end of May.

Wraparound Waltham

Collaborating to create a community of belonging and opportunity for newcomer immigrant students and their families.

This year, we have been proud to partner with Waltham Valor High School (WVHS) during their first year of operation as Waltham's newest high school.

One way that we have worked with WVHS students and staff is by supporting their community engagement efforts. For example, WPY's Wraparound Senior Program Coordinator, Alexa Cuellar, joined WVHS students and staff for an all-day summit at Regis College, led by the Expanding Girls' STEM Career Horizons. Students met with women STEM experts and were exposed to STEM industries and career options through dynamic workshops and activities. WVHS students learned about medical technology, explored the human brain in the neuroscience lab, conducted lab sampling, and even practiced computer coding as they designed their own website.

Alexa also supported WVHS students at the Metro South/West Workforce Board's Career Expo, and members of our team joined WVHS students and staff for a special visit with Waltham Fields Community Farm, where they learned all about the Farm's important role in our community.

We are thrilled to be supporting WVHS staff's efforts to connect their students with exciting educational opportunities and vital community resources!
