Career Exploration & Training (CET)

Connecting students to life-altering career development opportunities through meaningful paid internship experiences.

This month, we wrapped up another amazing Summer Internship Program! Our interns participated in an End of Summer Checklist Career Talk, featuring a “Taxes 101” session from our Finance and Operations Director, Esta Alexis. Students learned about basic tax terms, W2 forms, and more. The CET team also presented a guide on smoothly transitioning out of the summer internships, including tips on writing thank-you letters and requesting references. We were fortunate to have representatives from The Hanover Insurance Group join us to offer 1:1 resume and cover letter sessions to update students' resumes. Thank you to The Hanover Insurance Group for your support; we look forward to future collaborations!

On August 8th, interns, parents, and employers gathered for a fun-filled closing ceremony with delicious ice cream from Pizzi Farm, music, and lawn games. Interns received certificates of completion, which they proudly displayed in our photo booth. The ceremony also included a speech from WHS and WPY alumna Nina Kremer, who recently completed her final WPY internship at The Rose Art Museum. Nina talked about her many internship experiences with WPY and the role they played in her post-graduate plans. Additionally, Doc Wayne interns Caroline Fils-Aime and Sophia Alpert shared their reflections on their summer experiences and how they changed their perspectives on their future career goals.

Thank you to our incredible interns, employer partners, funders, and the WPY community. Your support and involvement have been integral to making this program a success!

Wraparound Waltham

Collaborating to create a community of belonging and opportunity for newcomer immigrant students and their families.

Pictured above: Grupo Monarca, WPY's support group for newcomer high school students, celebrating the end of summer programming with a canoe trip along the Charles River.

The Wraparound team had a joyous August filled with preparing for the new school year, taking nature breaks, and enjoying ice cream! For the second summer in a row, the WPY Summer Soccer Group brought together rising ninth grade newcomer students to play soccer and build healthy relationships with peers and WPS staff members. Throughout the summer, student participants built communication skills as they played with their team members, and connected with one another outside of an academic setting. This month, the participants celebrated the last session with pizza and ice cream. We are excited to continue the Summer Soccer Group next year and hope more students will be able to join us for community and fun!

For the third year in a row, the Grupo Monarca support group for newcomer high school students celebrated the end of the summer with a canoeing outing at Charles River Canoe and Kayak on Moody Street. The purpose of this trip is for our newcomer students to get to know and explore a different side of Waltham. We want our students to know that these fun and relaxing activities are accessible to them and their families. As the Grupo Monarca rowed their way through the Charles River, the WPY Wraparound Student Intern, Daniel, led mindfulness activities and icebreakers. The group also enjoyed music, worked on their communication skills as they learned how to row cohesively, and even sang "Happy Birthday" and "Las Mañanitas" to one of their peers! They also celebrated the last session with ice cream from Lizzy's, played their own version of "Loteria," and sang some songs with our wonderful clinician from Children's Charter, Michelle, who simultaneously played their mini guitar. This was a great way to end the group on such a positive and heartwarming note!
