Career Exploration & Training (CET)

Connecting students to life-altering career development opportunities through meaningful paid internship experiences.

Pictured above: WPY Teen Mental Health Alliance (TMHA) alumni with current TMHA Peer Leaders and WPY's Mental Health and Healthcare Professionals of Tomorrow Coordinator, Monica Manna

This month, WPY's Teen Mental Health Alliance (TMHA) had the pleasure of hosting an alumni panel featuring our first-ever group of TMHA Peer Leaders, who graduated Waltham High School in 2024. Alicia, Francine, Amy, and Michaela joined the current TMHA interns to share reflections from their first years of college, discuss the impact WPY programming has had on their studies and career paths thus far, and answer questions about key differences between high school and college. Interns had the opportunity to interact with alumni, ask questions about their WHS experience, and receive advice on life after high school. It is always a pleasure when WPY alumni return and meet with our current students.

In addition to the alumni panel, the TMHA interns are now working on their community project, which is the culmination of their internship. This cohort’s project will focus on the impact of phone usage on Waltham teens, as well as tips and strategies for connecting with one another offline. The interns will present their project to the community next month--wish them luck!

Wraparound Waltham

Collaborating to create a community of belonging and opportunity for newcomer immigrant students and their families.

WPY's Family & Student Engagement Senior Coordinator, Marlen Godinez, joined Waltham Valor High School students on a field trip this month

January marked the return of Wraparound Waltham's Grupo Monarca. Co-facilitated by a Children's Charter mental health clinician and WPY staff, Grupo Monarca is a support group for newcomer immigrant students focused on mental health, shared experience, and building healthy relationships with one another. WPY staff have worked closely with Waltham High School guidance counselors to identify students who would benefit from a social group after school, and so far we have over 15 student referrals!

This month also included an exciting field trip for Waltham Valor High School (WVHS) students. WPY's Family & Student Engagement Senior Coordinator, Marlen Godinez, joined the WVHS students and staff for their community-building field trip to Hale Education in Westwood. Students and staff participated in different outdoor activities and challenges such as building campfires and sledding!

The Wraparound team continues to facilitate trainings and professional development for school staff. Trainings have focused on providing holistic supports for immigrant students through a trauma-informed lens. This month we have conducted three trainings for Waltham Public Schools parent liaisons, Kennedy Middle School, and the Massachusetts Teachers Association.
