Join us in raising awareness about our hard working Residents.
This year has reiterated the fact that residents are pretty special individuals with diverse and exceptional skills. We couldn't resist the opportunity to highlight those skills through this year's campaign.
The Plan - An email will be sent to Learners daily on behalf of McMaster or Hospital Leadership with focus on one of these 5 themes:
A Resident is....
- Resilient (Monday)
- Advocate (Tuesday)
- Ally (Wednesday)
- Educator & Learner (Thursday)
- United (Friday)
Buttons will be available for Residents, Faculty, Staff and Fellows
- A button for residents – I am a Resident Physician – resilient, advocate, ally, educator & learner, united
- A button for faculty and staff – A Resident Physician is – resilient, advocate, ally, educator & learner, united

WRC Program for Faculty Development
|
|
This COVID-inflected workshop provides craft-based techniques - the equivalent of the biomedical “skills-based” and “competency” models - to health practitioners in order to create beautiful written works that, in the creation, are acts of care for the creator. Through a series of guided prompts that teach specific techniques, and through the sharing of work in a safe space, the participants become better writers, self-carers, and also better physicians through the processing of their own experience.
Presenters:
Dr. Shane Neilson, MD MFA MA PhD CCFP FCFP
Damian Tarnopolsky, Ph.D
Co-facilitators:
Sean Park, Ph. D
Dr. Catherine Tong, MD, CCFP(EM), FCFP
Overall Learning Objectives:
At the end of this learning activity the participants will be able to:
- Describe the benefits and the limits of narrative medicine as traditionally deployed in med ed pedagogy
- Gain skills in reflective practise through a craft-based approach
- Practise generative and editing techniques through individual and group work.

WRC Educational Scholarship Team
The WRC faculty development team and the WRC research team are excited to support WRC faculty members who are interested in educational scholarship. The new WRC educational scholarship team (WEST) leverages the enthusiasm of our faculty members, learners, and our research teams’ expertise to bring your educational innovation ideas to life, and help you disseminate them. You will find WEST resources and updates regularly in the Faculty Digests starting January 2021.
This month, we are featuring the keynote talk of Norman Education Research Day 2020. Yes, our institution runs an annual epic educational research conference with the acronym of NERD. The slide design itself is worth the watch. Find the 22 minute talk here:
While you watch, consider the answer to the following questions:
- How do concepts in cognitive science, like memory and categorization, apply to the teaching of clinical decision making?
- What is the role of basic science knowledge in learners’ clinical decision making?

Research Supervision Skills
“Scholarly Practice” is one of the four content pillars offered by the Program for Faculty Development at the Faculty of Health Sciences. As most learners are required to or develop interest in research and Quality Improvement (QI) projects, faculty members at the Waterloo Regional Campus are receiving increased demands from learners to design and conduct research/QI projects with the learners and provide research supervision.

FHS's Women Symposium: Leading Healthcare and Beyond
Increasingly, we know that women are underrepresented in academia and healthcare settings. The 2021 Women’s Symposium will be a venue where we can bring together women and their allies to consider how we might close the gap over time.
This will represent the first of these events, which we are hoping will evolve into an ongoing annual conference over time.
All faculty members who identify as women and allies of women within the Faculty of Health Sciences (and beyond) are invited to join us.
Each session will have a mix of external speakers and FHS leaders interested in exploring key topics around how we might increase the number of women in healthcare leadership positions in both academia and clinical work.
Overall Learning Objectives:
- List key issues facing women in academia, leadership, healthcare, and society;
- Add new skills to your basic toolkit for approaching key barriers that women face in academia, leadership, health care, and society;
- Create connections between women and allies across McMaster Faculty of Health Sciences and beyond.

AFC Clinician Educator Program
AFC Clinician Educator Program (CEP) is opening its 2021 call for applications and will close on March 8, 2021. The goal of the program is to train a competent and successful clinician educator who can provide consultative medical education advice and guidance for education projects. CEP is competency-based, meaning that completion of the diploma requires demonstration concurrent with active medical practice.
Attached is our brochure. Please feel free to circulate this to any faculty or senior trainees you feel may be interested in applying to CEP. We encourage physicians and senior trainees from all McMaster University departments to apply. This year will be our seventh cohort, and will join over 30 other trainees who already are partaking in the program.
**Applications due by: March 8, 2021 at 11:59 EST**
