A scoping review on barriers to mental healthcare in Canada from the perspectives of healthcare providers.
"Mental illness is among the leading causes of disability globally and, as we try to understand the barriers to mental healthcare and how best to improve health systems, it is incredibly important to learn stakeholder perspectives. Often, we study the perspectives of the general public, patients, and their families, but the thoughts of healthcare professionals and care providers are equally important to elucidating challenges that patients may not see but have a substantial impact on their care experience. We conducted a review of current literature regarding the perspectives of providers on the barriers to mental healthcare in Canada, revealing some interesting challenges including labyrinthine referral systems, continuing education gaps, and performance pressure negatively impacting working environments. Understanding these barriers is crucial to building initiatives that improve mental healthcare."
