This latest vintage is the CREAMIEST, SMOOTHEST, MOST POLISHED Muga Reserva to DATE.
Bodegas Muga is one of the oldest, most elegant and traditional Rioja producers. They have been ranked as the most popular Spanish wine in the USA (by Wine & Spirits Magazine, which also noted they were the only Spanish bodega that appears among the 35 most requested wines in the world) and have ranked in both Wine Spectator's and Wine Enthusiast's Top 100 multiple times.

Hello friends! Today we offer you two of our absolute favorite Spanish wines, the 2016 Prado Enea Gran Reserva Rioja and the Reserva 2020 (just ranked #51 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 list for 2024) from the famed Spanish classic winery Bodegas Muga. These are phenomenal wines with first-growth-like quality and the ability to age, all at bargain prices when compared to iconic collectibles from around the world.
More About Muga
Bodegas Muga was founded in 1932, and has since quickly risen to become the top Spanish winery in the world.
The winery controls every step of the viticultural and vinification process from the vineyards to making their own barrels and fermenting and aging the wine entirely in oak. Muga is one of only six estates in the world that owns its own cooperage and they import the oak directly from the United States and France.
They play by their own rules, and it works... neither traditional nor modern, these wines have paved a proven style all on their own.
We have only a limited supply of these wines, though, so please order promptly.
Salud,
—James Tran

2020 Bodegas Muga Reserva Rioja
93 Points - Robert Parker's WA:
"The 2020 Reserva showcases wines from the Haro region and is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano fermented in oak vat with a seven-day maceration. It was aged in barrel for 24 months—80% French and the rest are from central Europe and America. It was bottled at 14.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.55. This is a very reliable wine, keeping the profile year after year: ripe, juicy with integrated oak, spicy and tasty, with fine tannins with an approachable profile. This is a gentler year that is going to be a success with the general public. Balanced and gentle."
93 Points - Tim Atkin, MW:
"One of a dwindling number of top Riojas that combines grapes from the Rioja Alta and Rioja Oriental sub-regions, this impressive Reserva is a blend of Tempranillo with 20% Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano. Aged in French and 15% American barrels, it’s a youthful, structured, intense red from a difficult year with toast, wood smoke, black cherry and blueberry fruit and lots of underlying structure. 2024-2032."
92 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"I loved the 2020 Muga Reserva, a spicy, complex, classic Rioja that has both red and black fruits, ample cedary spice, leather, and violet-driven aromas, medium to full body, a ripe, supple, layered mouthfeel, and outstanding length. A blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, and the rest Graciano and Mazuelo, it's perfect for drinking over the coming decade." (July 2024)
92 Points - Vinous:
"The 2020 Reserva is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, Mazuelo and Graciano sourced from Rioja Alta. Aged for 24 months in oak barrels crafted at the winery, this garnet wine features a vanilla-cedar layer, accompanied by notes of black fruit, plums and subtle hints of herbs and animal nuances. The palate is dry, creamy and juicy, with a fairly chalky texture that lingers, presenting a compact flow." - Joaquin Hidalgo (Apr 2024)
92 Points - James Suckling:
"Ripe but fresh nose of currants, blackberries, chocolate and plums. Not a big red, rather fluid and medium-bodied with soft tannins. A juicy, drinkable Muga Reserva that is already appealing. Enjoy now."
91 Points, #51 Top 100 of 2024 - Wine Spectator:
"A rich, savory thread of tobacco, smoke and ground coffee underscores flavors of creamed cherry and blackberry fruit, black olive, orange peel and cocoa powder in this fresh and focused red. Medium-bodied and well-knit, with lightly chewy tannins firming the finish. Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano. Drink now through 2030."

2016 Bodegas Muga "Prado Enea" Rioja Gran Reserva
97+ Points - Robert Parker's WA:
"The expressive, complex and nuanced 2016 Prado Enea Gran Reserva is a textbook traditional Rioja in the making. 2016 was a very elegant year, with aging potential, volume and very good acidity and freshness. It's full-bodied but fine-boned, has 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.6 and 5.25 grams per liter acidity. It has terrific balance, with all the components in the right proportion to age superbly in bottle. They have also been working on the selection of wood used. This wine matured in French and American oak barrels for three years, and the oak is super integrated. 127,808 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2020. It was an exceptional year with volume and quality."
97 Points, #10 Top 100 of 2023 - James Suckling:
"Complex aromas of dark fruit with violets, walnuts and chocolate. Classy. It's full-bodied with plush yet fine velvety tannins, and a precise and pointed finish. Juicy and savory. Tight finish. It's very long. This is beautiful now but will be even better in three or four years. Linear and vertical at the same time. Try after 2026. (Aug 2023)
97 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"Deep ruby in color, this wine has a nose of cocoa powder, coffee bean, lavender and cherry. It is smooth at first sip, with tannins that slowly build in volume and then drift away to reveal black cherry, blackberry, chocolate, mint and orange-zest flavors. The brilliant finish is marked with a floral note. Drink through 2036."
96 Points - Vinous:
"Aged in barrel for 36 months, the 2016 Gran Reserva Prado Enea is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano from Rioja Alta. This dark garnet wine reveals thyme, plum and sour cherry notes, accompanied by reductive nuances of matchstick and saffron. Additionally, it displays hints of biscuit, wax and dried flowers. On the palate, it is dry, supple and chalky, with a juicy, energetic flow that leads to a long-lasting, complex finish. While the leaner style brought on by the cold vintage may appear slightly unsubstantial for Prado Enea lovers, it remains absolutely delicious."

"The white 2021 Blanco was produced with a blend of Viura, Garnacha Blanca and MalvasÃa de Rioja that fermented in oak vats and new French barriques and matured with the lees and two bâtonnages per week in the beginning and later daily for a total of four months. 2019 Bodegas Muga "Seleccion Especial" Rioja Reserva
96 Points - Tim Atkin:
"A great, great vintage" is how Isaac Muga describes 2019 and he certainly has a point here on what is effectively the second wine of Torre Muga. Partnering Tempranillo with 12% Garnacha Tinta and 4% each of Mazuelo and Graciano, it's a structured, polished delight, with stylish 40% new French oak, blackberry, blood orange and liquorice favours and layered, granular tannins. 2025-40" (February 2023)
95 Points, #39 Top 100 of 2023 - James Suckling:
"Fresh and demure nose with lots of cocoa powder, blackcurrants, blackberries and a hint of cigar and charcoal. Excellent depth and class here with a very juicy center palate. Medium to full body with a long and layered finish. Drink or hold." (November 2023)

2020 Bodegas Muga "Flor de Muga" Rioja Blanco Reserva
94 Points - James Suckling:
"Intense aromas of oatmeal, lemon pastry, roasted pineapples and mineral. Fresh, bone-dry and creamy with good volume and substance. 40% viura, 30% garnacha blanca and 30% maturana blanca. Drink now." (Aug 2023)
94 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2020 Blanco Flor de Muga is a flavorful Rioja white sourced from Villalba de Rioja and Galbárruli in Rioja Alta. It's a blend of 40% Viura, 30% Garnacha Blanca and 30% Maturana Blanca, aged for six months in new French oak barrels. With enticing aromas of peach, herbs and a delicate oak-hazelnut layer, it offers a dry, creamy and taut profile on the palate. The wine's heightened acidity adds vibrancy, leading to a final note of marzipan on the long finish. This white blend embodies Rioja's diversity with a complex, satisfying character. (Drink between 2024-2032)"
94 Points - Wine Advocate:
"The 2020 Flor de Muga Blanco has a golden color and a smoky and toasty nose. It was produced with Viura and around 30% Garnacha Blanca and Maturana Blanca, sold as Reserva. It fermented and matured separately in barrels and a few 500-liter barrels for six years. It's chalky, tasty, round and balanced with very good freshness (a constant in the whites and rosés) and has a long, tasty finish."
