"Take me to the ocean; Let me sail the open sea. To breathe the warm & salty air, and dream of things to be." - Erica Billups
I hope you all are having a relaxing summer! I can't believe it's the middle of July already ... seems summer is cruising by too quickly, but there is a lot of time left to enjoy all the pleasures of the season. I can't wait for our Catalina Rendezvous July 25-27 shared with our Long Beach WSA sisters. This is going to be an epic adventure! We are planning some more casual meet ups, so be sure to keep watch on our members-only Facebook page for our Pop-Up Events. We aim to provide as many opportunities possible for our members to gather and have some fun this summer on land and sea.
We'll be back in full swing with our land based general meeting Tuesday, August 7th at 6:30 p.m. in Dana Point. A "Nauti-ful" evening is planned for "Knot Your Average Meeting" where we will hone our knot making skills and engage in some friendly competition. One of our favorite on the water events is our Full Moon sail which will be lighting up the evening sky on Saturday, August 25th. Be sure to register for our events early as they do fill up.
One of my favorite parts of WSA-OC is the camaraderie. A short jaunt into our June Sailstice event I had formed new bonds with several new delightful members. It's so much fun to develop new friendships and our members have such an array of diverse and interesting backgrounds; you never know how a connection may benefit you. It's also encouraging to know that our fellow members are eager to share their sailing and boating knowledge with one another.  Recently, one of our members needed some help with boat systems and taking her vessel out for a "confidence building" sail. It was heartening to see at the drop of an anchor, the thoughtful members who volunteered their time to share their skills. All of these are great examples of the friendship and support that are among the many benefits of WSA-OC membership!
Sails Up!

Gettin' Knotty in August

We'll be getting a lot knotty, a little nauti(cal) and not at all naughty (fingers crossed) for our August meeting.  No longer will you be  embarrassed  when asked to tie a bowline or attach a fender. Why, you wonder? Because our featured presentation will be spent learning all about knots. We'll have a hands-on knot tying lesson, followed by a fun knotty game/contest where everyone can show off their new skills ... remember not the naughty kind ;).

Full Moon + Sailing = Yes Please!
What's better than (or just as good as) a beautiful day sail with a group of great friends? It's a night sail - by the light of the silvery moon - with the same group of great friends! Our annual Full Moon Social Sail promises to be another fabulous event.

Join us on Saturday, August 25th in Dana Point Harbor where we'll meet in front of Harpoon Henry's at 6:00 p.m. for our boat assignments and some treats. Then we'll head off while twilight turns to dusk and then dark of night. Here's hoping for clear skies for optimal full moon viewage!

This is a popular members-only event and generally heavily attended. Don't miss the boat (groan) and sign up now for just $25 per member!

Summer Sailstice A Lot of Wind
The Summer Sailstice daysail event was great! The weather, not so much. Considering it was held on practically the longest day of the year, Saturday, June 23rd, the sun, ah, decided not to make an appearance AT ALL. So. Sad. We did, however, have some major wind and waves, which made for some exciting and wet (for some) sailing.  It was  also quite chilly, although not everyone agreed. What we wouldn't give for some of that cool weather now, eh?

Because of the crazy weather, three of the boats opted to sail without a jib just a reefed mainsail, the other decided to pull out the jib, albeit reefed, and, well, sail fast. One of the boats thought the weather was a bit much and decided to hit the bar early. Natch.

The dodgy weather aside, we had a ton of fun aboard four member owned boats: Lisa Cullinane's Sails Lady, Stan & Toni Flores' HMS Trollop, Susan Obermiller's Gypsea Girl and Karen Pacella's Sognatorre. Thank you to all of our boat owners for allowing us the privilege of sailing aboard your boat. However, we'd like to give a special THANK YOU to Stan and Toni for allowing one of our more experienced sailors to take Trollop out without them.

And what would any event be without having our traditional beverages and appetizers afterward? We switched it up and had our après sail at El Torito in Dana Point Harbor. Several members, who were unable to sail, met us there for drinks and  appetizers.

We are always in need of boats sign up to participate in our on-the-water events so we can accommodate as many members as possible.  Email Karen Pacella, our on-the-water events coordinator,  if you want more information about how you can participate as a boat owner.

Catalina Staycation & Three-Day Rendezvous

As you may be aware, our upcoming three-day weekend getaway (July 27th - 29th) to Catalina Island's Two Harbors/The Isthmus is sold out. However, we are taking names for a waitlist. Yes, put me on the waitlist!
Our Members Give Back
WSA-OC members raised funds late last year to donate to hurricane re-building efforts in the BVI's following the unprecedented damage from the 2017 hurricane season.
We are proud to announce that sent a check for $2500 to Virgin Unite/BVI Community Support Fund to assist them with the work they are doing to help the communities still suffering the effects of last year's hurricanes. Our contribution coincided with the beginning of the 2018 hurricane season. The Dana Point Times goes into more  detail  about our  philanthropic  work.  Thank  you to our generous members!
