Chatting With The Commodore
Karen Pacella, WSA-OC Commodore
I certainly loved my 4th of July Holiday. I saw so many dressed up people, dinghies and sailboats, smelled some wonderful BBQ, and even took in a little exercise - - a good brisk SIT! It was truly a great day for me. I hope you enjoyed it as well. Even though Summer officially kicked off in June, it seems Independence Day really gets us all into full swing. The weather has turned from 'June Gloom' to 'Just Perfect July', boats are on the water, and we're sailing in T-shirts!!! What could be better?!

WSA-OC has so much more scheduled from here on out.  Our upcoming Catalina Weekend is a 'must attend' - don't experience any FOMO - get signed up today! Whether it's Catalina, our Raft Up, Brunch on Board, or any of our monthly On-the-Water Events, they all promise to be fun!  Our valued Boat Owners continue to be  extremely valued; and for all our events - they just can't happen without our Boat Owners' generosity! If you'd like to volunteer your vessel for this 4-day event - please be sure to let Kt Reiter know - We Need You!

I'd like to close my monthly 'letter' with a little reflection and introspection.... please indulge me for a brief moment.  So many of us find our day to day lives to filled with ups and downs - it's certainly the case for me and many people I know and love. Yet, at the end of the day, it's the people we know, the memories we make and the love we give and get that matter the most.. I want to publicly thank my family, friends and my beloved sailing community.  My life is richer because all of you exist in my life!

Here's to a rich Summer Sailing Season!

August General Meeting

Spirit of Dana Point
The Spirit of Dana Point engaged in a mock cannon battle at sea

Join us for our August meeting where we'll hear about the many maritime programs offered by our Dana Point neighbor, the Ocean Institute (OI).The Ocean Institute provides a unique opportunity to learn what it takes to sail aboard a historic Tall Ship. Owned by the OI, the Spirit of Dana Point has provided many women the opportunity to get out on the water and experience the ocean in a unique way! It provides a unique educational platform to gain an historical perspective while learning how to care for our ocean. The love for sailing is common to WSA-OC and OI. WSA-OC Community Service
WSA-OC First Annual  Girls AdventureSail®

Our inaugural AdventureSail® will be held on Sunday, August 11 th  from
10 am-4 pm.  This nationwide program is sponsored by National Women's Sailing Association (NWSA) and is  designed to introduce girls ages 9-14 to a day of sailing to help build confidence, work on team building and learn to overcome adversity.  The girls will take turns at the helm and trimming the sails under the guidance of our experienced female skippers and member mentors who will crew and act as safety monitors.

We will greet 25 girls from the Laguna Beach Boys and Girls Club and begin the day with a tour of the Ocean Institute. Participants will hear a presentation on protecting our ocean and marine environment, then board the tall ship Pilgrim for a quick tour. After lunch and sailing, WSA-OC member Susie Campbell will end the day with a talk about the Blue Heart of the Ocean.

Once they have completed AdventureSail®, the girls will become eligible for a free Junior Membership and scholarship opportunities with NWSA, as well as the
WSA-OC Scholarship Program.

AdventureSail® is a rewarding experience for the volunteers, as well as the girls.
If you are interested in volunteering, you must pre-register by sending an email to wsaoc.communityservice@gmail.com.   There will be a final committee meeting for all of the registered volunteers prior to the WSA-OC General Meeting at Aventura in Dana Point on Tuesday, August 6 th from 5:45-6:30 pm.

WSA-OSeas Race Team/LEMWOD Update
WSA-OSeas 2018 Team

This year will mark the 5th year in a row WSA-OC hopes to compete in the annual Linda Elias Memorial One Design (LEMWOD) with our advanced team of racers, the OSeas.  Every year, we try to further develop our race team and provide the opportunity for more members to race as part of the WSA-OSeas Race Team.
LEMWOD, which takes place every October, is the most elite event we participate in each year.   LEMWOD teams are made up of 12 advanced racers aboard the Long Beach Sailing Foundation's Catalina 37 one-designs. This year's LEMWOD is October 12 th- 13th and will be an invitational for the first time.  Only skippers invited by the LBYC will be eligible to enter.
The 2019 LEMWOD also marks the second year of expanded opportunities for the intermediate and advanced racer with the Cal 20 fleet provided by the SYC Sailing Foundation. Cal 20  skippers and the primary helmsperson (if different than the skipper)  must be a member of an SCYA Club (WSA-OC members are eligible) and be approved as a charter skipper by the SYC Sailing Foundation.

For additional information please refer to the NOR. If interested in trying out for Catalina 37 team (next practice/try-out is 8/17) or receiving more information on racing in Cal 20 fleet, email Denise Eldredge.
