Chatting With The Commodore
Karen Pacella, WSA-OC Commodore
It's almost here.....drum roll please............SUMMER! Soon, we'll be sailing in shorts and light shirts! In fact, our next On the Water Event - Sailstice, will officially kick off the season. Have you signed up?
Our last General Meeting celebrated yet another big event - Transpac. For those of you who don't know, Transpac is a large bi-annual yacht race (happens in odd numbered years) from Los Angeles (Long Beach) all the way to Hawaii! This year there are over 97 boats lining up for the long trek. Several of our very own WSA-OC members will be on board a variety of them. If you were in attendance, you heard Stephen Ashley (co-owner and Skipper of Onde Amo) go over some Transpac history, trivia and memories from his race in 2017. This year, Onde Amo has a new crew and we got to meet many of them!!! Debbie Kraemer, Loryne Shamber, Michael Arraji and Risa Scott (co-owner and land crew); all WSA-OC members!!! Member Barbara Lawler and her husband Michael are also joining the race this year and shared some special memories of Transpacs gone by - even the year of 'The Marriage Proposal' - such a special story. We wish all our racers good luck and a safe trip!
As an organization, we sponsor and coordinate many wonderful events, from Dock Side Clinics, to fun On the Water Events, and Community Service opportunities. Yet, I'm continually amazed at the friendships being formed, sailing trips offered, and even trips coordinated that grow amongst members beyond WSA-OC's arm of influence. I understand a group of people have decided to fly over to Hawaii to see the finish of Transpac!!!! What a great vacation so many of our members are taking. I wish I was able to coordinate another vacation myself!
Remember, no General Meeting in July - See everyone in August at Aventura!

WSA-OSeas Race Team/LEMWOD Update
LEMWOD 2017 Medium

Every year we try to further develop our race team and provide the opportunity for more members to race as part of the WSA-OSeas Race Team.

The most elite event we participate in each year is the  Linda Elias Memorial Women's One Design  (LEMWOD) which takes place every October. LEMWOD teams are made up of 12 advanced racers aboard the Long Beach Sailing Foundation's Catalina 37 one-designs. This year's LEMWOD is October 12 th- 13th with newly expanded opportunities for the intermediate and advanced racer.

For the second year in a row, there will be two classes of boats competing. Advanced racers may compete aboard the Catalina 37s and I
Cal 20 Fleet
ntermediate and Advanced sailors are eligible to participate in the Cal 20 class.

Cal 20 teams will be open to all WSA-OC members on a first come/first served basis and are a great opportunity to improve your skills and join in the festivities. Each Cal 20 team is made up of 2-3 crew, so get your teams together and come play. We will share more information once Notice of Race is published and sign-ups open.

Key positions are still open for the OSeas Catalina 37 team and our first team practice/try-out will be held on July 7th.  Sign-ups are now open  for this first important practice.  Eligibility to tryout for Catalina 37 team includes agility, prior race experience and knowing your position with little direction. Signing up and showing up for practices will also be a factor in team selection. Racers are strongly encouraged to participate in upcoming Sea Gals events (including the one this Sunday, 6/9) to become more familiar with the 37's, learn more about racing and improve your skills. Sea Gals events are open to all women and  sign-ups are open now.

For a fun opportunity to get out on the Cal20's and do some practice races, consider showing up for  Shoreline Yacht Club's fun Taco Tuesday races . They are informal races open to all experience levels and Shoreline Village extends guest privileges to all WSA-OC members.

For those not racing, we always need land crew to cheer us on!! Feel free to  email Denise Eldredge  with any questions.

P.S. Please feel free to forward to your racing friends who may not yet be WSA-OC members as we've just rolled out a  fantastic mid-year membership offer!!

Final Two Dockside Clinics
We have embarked on another new venture this year which has been really successful. We filled up the first three focusing on Buying Your First Boat, General Maintenance and Winch Wizard. Registration for the final two; Dinghy Handling and DIY Canvas is open now. The cost is $25* per session, first come first served.

The Dockside Clinics are designed for a small group of 6-8 people per session to either prepare you for boat ownership and/or bolster your knowledge and skillset if you already have a boat. Our goal is to work with each attendee's issues or needs individually and as a group.

Each Dockside Clinic will be two hours and afterward we're hoping there will be time for additional practice, conversation, drinks, etc. Who knows sailing may even end up happening!

Judy Fusco, who many of you know from either the Sailing Convention for Women, Long Beach WSA or our May meeting will be our instructor. She has years of sailing and teaching experience.
June 15 ~ Dinghy Handling
Everyone will get a chance to drive a dinghy around the harbor to get comfortable with how they handle; center console and outboard.

June 29 ~ DIY Canvas
Boats are typically full of canvas but so is your patio! Come join us to learn simple basics and tools of canvas repair and design. Keep an eye out for venue updates as this will not be on the dock but inside where we have room to spread out.

Summer Sailstice Day Sail In Newport Beach
Worldwide Event!
 More Boats = More Participants!
Event Update: We were lucky enough to have two more generous members sign up to participate with their boats at our June meeting so we were able to register several more participants. However now the event is full again. If we have anymore skippers sign up, we can include more members.
Drop Event Director KT Reiter a note if you want more info about participating with your boat for one of our fun events (no obligation, we promise!!)

Bring a water bottle, and anything yummy you'd like to share - we've got lunch covered. You'll want a light jacket, sunscreen, sunglasses,a hat and OH YES - a camera - let's memorialize the day.

WSA-OC Helps Pick-up 4,700 Lbs of Trash!

(L-R) WSA-OC members; Barbara Kelley, Dee Carroll, Kelvin McCaleb, Laura McCaleb, Amy Robison Click image above to see WSA-OC Community Service Team in action!!

On Saturday, June 1 st several WSA-OC members gathered in Newport Beach to assist with the 3 rd Annual Newport Harbor Underwater Cleanup.  Members helped register 200+ above water crew and over 100 PADI divers.  After registering, everyone was deployed to various locations in the harbor to help with collection of debris and pollutants, mapping and collecting of important data to be entered into a global database.  Project Aware and Beach Cities Scuba also participated.

Project Aware's flagship citizen-science program, Dive Against Debris® empowers scuba divers to remove marine debris from the ocean and report data on the materials collected.  Since 2011 almost 50,000 divers in 114 countries have collected and reported over 1 million pieces of trash.

Dive Against Debris® both improves the health of the ocean ecosystems and provides valuable information to help inform and draft policy change.

About 4700 lbs of debris and pollutants were gathered on Saturday. Some items retrieved from underwater were boat sails, lots of boat canvas, a bimini with radar, a toilet, dock floats, road cones, boat and engine parts and many beer bottles and plastics.

The event is organized by Help Your Harbor, which is a coalition of community environmental groups.  After the cleanup, they provided lunch, prizes and a live band for entertainment.
