WSA-OC The Whistle
May 2017
Chatting With The Commodore
Risa Scott,
WSA-OC Commodore
Wow! This year is flying by and I am still not organized!! I can't believe it is almost June!!! I was able to get out on the boats several times in the last couple of weeks and I think all of them turned out to be pretty amazing days!
The Newport to Ensenada Race is once again in the books! It was another year of crazy winds/no winds. Quite a few of the boats that started didn't finish and those that did had some level of damage or at least some stories to tell. I also got to spend some time (in the slip) on Lisa Cullinane's new boat/baby ... what a beautiful boat and what a nice addition to our WSA-OC fleet of member boats! We only have to wait a couple more weeks until the new boat name is revealed!! I also got to go out on the water to race in the Oceanside Yacht Club Charity Regatta supporting the Women's Resource Center in Oceanside. It was a beautiful day and such fun sailing with so many sailing sisters, who were also participating in the regatta. The Shoreline YC Sailing Foundation, of which I am the Chair and the Sailing Class Coordinator, has also begun its summer of sailing classes in Long Beach. It is always a special time to share sailing with beginners and watching them fall in love with the water and the sailing!
I know many of you were able to join us last month at our general meeting to hear Leslie Nack, a local sailor (Oceanside) share her adventures as recounted in her book Fourteen. She spoke of the empowerment she felt as she faced so many challenges at such an early age and how it helped to shape her into the person she is today. She also shared her inspiring stories and spoke of the interesting destinations and cultures she visited.
The June meeting will be a fun one as well (aren't they all?). We will be hearing some interesting stories about our beloved Catalina, all while indulging in our very own ice cream social.  Be sure to check your diets at the door!  It is time to celebrate summer, which is just a few weeks away. We will be celebrating the Summer Sailstice on June 24th as we plan a raft up of member boats in Newport Harbor. Be sure to sign up on the website, as space will be limited and logistics will be 'interesting' as we try to coordinate boats coming in from at least three different marinas.

We Had a Nack for  Empowering Women Sailors
Our May general meeting was opened by Commodore Risa Scott and in keeping with  the  night's theme,  Empowering & Empowered Women Sailors,  she  took a few moments to recognize the women important to her and to WSA-OC.

After the various board and committee members made their  announcements and gave their updates, Risa opened the floor up for a final discussion of the proposed amendment to the by-laws; an addition of a 'Code of Conduct.' After reading aloud and a brief discussion the proposed draft was approved unanimously by the membership in attendance, no opposition was voiced.

Nack with Aegir's original log.

Once the club's business was finalized, Vice Commodore, Melanie Green introduced our featured sp eaker, Leslie Johansen-Nack sailor and author of the autobiography  Fourteen: A Daughter's Memoir of Adventure, Sailing, and Survival Leslie, a self-described newbie to speaking engagements, is a writer and always wanted to be a writer. She graduated UCLA with a degree in English literature. Thankfully, for all of us, her life-long dream began as a young child diligently keeping a journal.

Through her journal, Aegir's  daily log and memories of family and friends she wrote her multi-award winning memoir, Fourteen, a harrowing coming-of-age tale of overcoming the divorce of her parents, abuse at the hands of  her father - who had full custody of his three girls - and being an "oddball who lives on a boat," the aforementioned Aegir. Through all of these obstacles she developed a love of sailing and became a very competent sailor. She and her  husband currently own Prudence, a Cal 27.

As Leslie discussed the book, she was able to take us all back to 1975 - when her dad and two sisters set sail for the South Pacific, their first stop in an
around the world trip - by sharing a small portion of the 400 slides her father took during their trip (all of which can be seen on her website; link above). She also brought props from their travels and read several passages from the book. After listening to Leslie, it's pretty safe to say she is the definition of an empowering and empowered woman sailor!

Earth Day + Duffy Boat Progressive = Fun
We had a lot of fun on Saturday, April 22nd, Earth Day as we Duffy-ied our way through Newport Harbor. On-the-water planner extraordinaire, Gabi Schwaiger planned a perfect fun-filled day, including serving up the perfect weather.

Everyone met at Windward Sailing Club and headed off to the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club for appetizers and drinks. After enjoying our time there it was off to the American Legion Yacht Club for lunch, where we lucked out with live music on the patio. As we headed back to Windward we indulged in the WSA-OC provided sweet treats.

Since it was Earth Day, we did not just eat, drink and sit back and enjoy the camaraderie. We had a friendly competition to see who could collect the most trash from the harbor. In a good way, the harbor was surprisingly clean. However, all four of our Duffy boats collected many items that could pose a danger to sea life and vessels alike. As predicted, Brenda Highley's boat collected the most floating garbage and won a reusable WSA-OC Klean Kanteen water bottle.
Join Us in June for the History of Avalon
Once again we have a full program slated for our June meeting. We will begin the evening with the epitome of summer fun ... an ice cream social. So, as Risa stated above, leave your diet at the door. Following the new business and announcements, not to mention the sweet treats,  John Marshall, Staff Commodore of South Shore Yacht Club of Newport Beach and Vice President South Recreational Boaters of California will be our featured speaker.

John will be presenting an interesting and entertaining History of Avalon, Santa Catalina Island's largest town. He begins his presentation 7,000 years ago and ends it in the present day. Along the way he will showcase the various personalities whose lives make up a rich history of the island town. The presentation features many historical photographs of Avalon and the people that helped to shape one of our favorite destinations as boaters.

See you next month and remember we won't be meeting in July.
