Chatting With The Commodore
Risa Scott
 WSA-OC Commodore
Wow! What a year it's been!  I can't believe I only have one event, the Annual Holiday Party, and one more 'Chatting with the Commodore' left on my calendar as WSA-OC Commodore. I'll leave my farewell column for next month. However, since we just elected a new Board of Directors for 2018, I'd like to acknowledge the work of Kathleen Brown, Gabi Schwaiger and Wayne Wallace; all of whom have chosen to step down from the BoD for 2018.

The three of them have been here since the beginning, well, since the relaunch in 2015 and I, for one, can't thank them enough! If you don't know Kathleen, Gabi or Wayne or know what they do for our organization, you must know, their work has been vitally important.
Without Kathleen, we wouldn't have our gorgeous website and logos. I'm not technically savvy, but I've grown to appreciate how much work maintaining a website entails ... it's beyond a 'lot of work'. Kathleen might be stepping down from the BoD, but not away from us. Wayne maintains all of our financials. This may not seem that daunting, but he almost singlehandedly brought the organization into the 21st century, in that the majority of the accounting is now done online. As Wayne steps away from the position of Treasurer, he is not walking away from us either. He has already committed to continuing his work with the Sail for the Blind & Visually Impaired event in 2018. Gabi, as most of you know, has been at the helm of our on-the-water events, which again, is much more work than it seems. The on-the-water events are
essentially the heart of our organization.
I am so thankful for their hard work and dedication, as it has made my job so much easier. I can honestly say I speak for the entire BoD that we will miss working with
them every month. THANK YOU for all that you do!

Buy Your Tickets Now For Our Holiday Party
'Tis the Season to Be Jolly & Giving

As in years past, in lieu of our regular December meeting, we will host a Holiday soirée. Since we "went" to Hawaii for our November meeting, we wanted the tropical fun to continue. Come dressed for the islands and let the sounds of Panjive - and their steel drums - transport you to a tropical paradise whilst you sip on your favorite drink.

A silent auction will be held with proceeds benefiting the non-profit organization Sailors Helping. In the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, which slammed into the Caribbean and Southeastern U.S. in September of this year, several sailors felt they couldn't just "sit by and do nothing," so they began mobilizing friends and other boaters to provide supplies to the islands and Sailors Helping was born.
Many of our members have expressed a willingness to help out our fellow sailors as well. The WSA-OC Board of Directors chose Sailors Helping to get behind this Holiday Season. Please take a moment to check out their website for additional information.

Current members may bring non-member(s) as a guest. Tickets will NOT be sold at the door. You and your guest(s) must pre-register, if you wish to attend. The cost of the event is $35 per person and includes appetizers and dinner. The price goes up to $40 pp after November 27th, so get your tickets now! Hope to see all of you with bells on!

Last On-The-Water Event of 2017 Was a Success
A Night Sail With Wind!

On Friday, November 3rd, four boats set sail at 7:00 p.m. from Dana Point Harbor to
The full "Beaver" moon, as captured by Brenda Highley aboard her boat Mañana
enjoy the full "Beaver" moon out at sea. It was one of those magical nights where everything fell into place. We had a nice breeze that got the boats up to 5 - 7 kts of boat speed and the beautiful moon lit up the sky.  Later, we were able to enjoy the stars as well. Some hot chocolate and snacks completed the experience of the beautiful ocean and great camaraderie amongst WSA-OC members!

Since this was the last WSA-OC on-the-water event for 2017, let's take a moment to thank Gabi Schwaiger, who for the past three years, coordinated all of our on-the-water events. This event marked the end of her time as the Director of Events, as she chose not to run for a position on the 2018 Board of Directors. Our events would not have been as successful as they were without Gabi's time and dedication. So the next time you see her, take a moment to tell her "Thanks!" for all she has done for WSA-OC over the past three years. THANK YOU GABI!!!

New Board Elected & Tales of Transpac
WSA-OC Members Shine at November Meeting

The most important order of business at our November was electing the WSA-OC Board of Directors for 2018. As no office had opposition and there were no nominations from the floor, Commodore Risa Scott, proposed the membership vote via acclimation. The members in attendance approved the slate with no dissenting votes voiced. The 2018 WSA-OC Board of Directors will be: Commodore, Melanie Green; Vice Commodore, Karen Pacella; Rear Commodore, Brenda Highley; Secretary, Vallerie Gonzales; Treasurer, Barbara Kelley; Membership Director, Cheryl Case; Director, Valerie Rhodes and Junior Staff Commodore, Risa Scott.

Stephen, Charles, Tracy and Bill during their presentations
After the business portion of the meeting was completed, Melanie introduced the program Tales of Transpac, in which  f our WSA-OC members, Stephen Ashley, Charles Buckner, Tracy Gallucci and Bill McNamara shared their experiences, both good and bad, of competing in the Transpac race and/or the "Transback" delivery.
What we learned: All three boats received a Transpac trophy   (click link then scroll down, right column to see what they won); you need to be prepared for anything and everything and you still might not have the perfect solution; people got sick;
camaraderie amongst crew is vitally important; everyone caught and ate mahi-mahi; there is a lot of water between Long Beach and Honolulu; and everyone seems about 50/50, if they would compete future Transpac races or "Transback" deliveries. Thankfully this is a biannual event, so there is still plenty of time for them and the rest of us to decide if a Trasnpac/"Transback" is in our future.

Charles Buckner, Bill McNamara,  Stephen Ashley and Tracy Gallucci after their presentations.

We also had a 50/50 raffle with half of the money, $108, going to Sailors Helping and the other half to Shelley Smigel. Drinks on Shelley at the Holiday Party ... haha jk ;)

Volunteers Still Needed

Volunteers are needed to  assist the 2018 BoD with:

Philanthropy: Act as a liaison between BoD and our chosen charity(s). Provide  updates to general membership, spearhead philanthropic activities, etc.

Programming: Organize and oversee the program and/or speakers for our monthly meetings. Report to BoD, etc.

Don't want to jump into the deep end by yourself? Grab a friend and tackle the task together. And don't worry, we're all new at this and fully support one another, so you'll not be alone!

Everyone on the BoD and committees are volunteers. The more people that are involved the greater chance of success for WSA-OC. If you are interested in volunteering or have questions about the positions email Commodore Risa/Melanie

Barbara is in the process of outfitting the boat with safety gear and creature comforts. She is also becoming familiar with her new toy, but is looking forward to having WSA-OC members come sailing with her in the very near future.
