Chatting With The Commodore
Melanie Green,
WSA-OC Commodore
Happy Fall Y'all!
Can it really be almost October already?! I might be in denial, however my calendar says it's so. Schools are back into full swing. One can get their Pumpkin Spice Latte fix at Starbucks, and when Costco has Christmas trees on display you really know Fall has arrived! We local sailors never despair, as we know a little secret. Some of the best sailing of the season is right now, when the crowds have thinned along the coast, and some of our best boating weather is on the horizon.
Wow, what an incredible summer we have had at WSA-OC. We've had some diversely fun on the water and land based events. If you are joining us as a new member, do not fear we have an equally fabulous 4th quarter planned for everyone. While we won't have a general meeting in October, we have a coastal cleanup day planned for Saturday, October 6th. November brings an informative guest speaker from NOAA to our November 6th general meeting, which is also our election night. If you are feeling the call of duty to help us out in some way on a committee or board position in 2019 we'd love to have your support!
In closing, I want to send a special shout out to our OSeas Racing team as they near the LEMWOD Regatta October 12th - 14th. These ladies have spent countless hours training in preparation for this prestigious Catalina 37 one design race. We wish you all the best of luck! Kick some nautical booty and don't forget you are all winners to us!!

Sails Up!

By the Light of the Silvery Moon
It feels so long ago, but it was only last month that we went out on our Moonlight Sail. It was a wonderful event in which four boats participated, five were scheduled, but one of them had some engine issues and couldn't make the trek to Newport Harbor. But have no fear, we were able to accommodate everyone.

CTCT-20180925_163647 The evening began with sunshine as we got setup and departed the harbor. We were treated to a gorgeous SoCal sunset as we headed out to open water. As soon as the sun set, the marine layer rolled in. Just as it was looking like it was going to be a non-moonlight Moonlight Sail the clouds cleared and we were treated to the 'silver highway.' Not only did we have a beautiful, bright, full moon, we were able to see Mars, Venus and Jupiter as well. But the best part of the evening was the wind! Yes, we were able to actually sail and it was warm. It was so great, in fact, that no one wanted to return to the dock, but return we did.  Once there the party didn't end. We had an impromptu boat party, as the ALYC was closed for a private party.

Once again, THANKS to all of our boat owners - Brenda Highley, Barbara Kelley, Debbie Kraemer and Karen Pacella - for participating and in one case allowing your boat to participate without you!

September Meeting was Full of Laughs
Our September meeting, Beer, Brats & Bingo, went something like this: Socialize. Business. Eat. Fun & Laughter. That's it, in a teeny tiny nutshell.

CTCT-20180925_163340 We socialized during our Happy Half Hour. The primary announcements during the business portion of the meeting were the introduction of Laura McCaleb as the Community Service Chairperson, the cancellation of SVI and that 2019 will be the 40th Anniversary of WORSA/WSA-OC. During the break we took the time to partake in the 'Beer & Brats' portion of the evening and made our final bingo card purchases. The  Fun & Laughter portion of the evening consisted of playing several rounds of bingo. Winners had their pick from the prize pile. Shout out to "Table #5" for providing the unintentional/intentional laugh riot of running commentary during the games. I'm pretty sure some of us got an ab workout from all of the laughing.

The evening ended with a 50/50 raffle with the proceeds benefiting the WSA-OSeas racing team, to help offset some of their LEMWOD expenses. Kathie Miller, a guest  of treasurer Barbara Kelley won $86, which she generously donated back to the club. A HUGE THANK YOU to Mary Coleman from the Hospitality Committee for providing  all of the evening's delicious Oktoberfest themed food!

Lordy, Lordy, Look Who's 40

We hope to bring back SVI in 2019! Stay tuned ...

⚓️ Please join us in welcoming our newest Committee Chairperson, Laura McCaleb! Laura has agreed to head up our Community Service team and develop new projects that will align with our Mission Statement goals of, "preserving and protecting our oceans and contributing to our local community through on-the-water philanthropic activities."
Laura has worked in social services and public health as a government employee for 34 years. She has volunteered on many committees, boards and task forces which established scholarship funds and events in order to foster partnerships with local constituents, stakeholders and communities.

"I have a heart for serving and giving back to my local and global communities and support youth and elderly initiatives. I'm excited to uphold WSA-OC's mission statement to expand access to sailing for women and specifically younger women who would not normally have sailing opportunities."

Laura is looking to have several members serve on the Community Service Committee with her. Email her if you are interested.

⚓️ Keep an eye on our website, Facebook and Instagram pages for information about 2019 membership renewals. Info coming soon!

Photo of the Month
A couple of our members recently saw the orcas/killer whales that have been hanging around Orange County. This is a screen grab from a video of the orcas chasing and feeding on dolphins. Sadly, this is probably the last image of this baby dolphin. So sad, but it's the circle of life :( Nature is amazing!
