President's Message - Gary Smotherman
WSDLA: A Transformation into 2023

In March, our Dental Lab Forum theme and schedule featured local State of Washington speakers. The Board of Directors have decided to take this same local focus a step farther and bring the management of WSDLA back to the region, as well.

After 10 years under management of Partners In Association Management in Tallahassee, FL, WSDLA is moving our management team back to the State of Washington. As of January 1, 2023, WSDLA will be managed by Association Management, Inc. in Gig Harbor WA. AMI began in 1986 and relocated to Gig Harbor in 2003. Their team is comprised of over 20 professional individuals who have diverse but complementary skills and substantial collective experience and background in association management and business.

You will be able to meet our new staff team during our 2023 Northwest Dental Laboratory Forum being held March 10-11, 2023 at the Embassy Suites Seattle/Bellevue located in Bellevue, WA. Please plan to attend this important conference. Watch your email and mail for schedule and registration information.

We are excited to have AMI on board as our new management team. We know their expertise and experience in association management and their first hand business knowledge of the State of Washington will help WSDLA succeed in 2023 and beyond.

We would also like to thank Partners In Association Management and their staff for the past 10 years of management. We will still be collaborating with them on national dental laboratory technology issues through NADL and NBC and look forward to a continued longstanding relationship with them.

2023 is going to be an exciting year of changes and transformation and the Board of Directors look forward to working with you to make WSDLA an even stronger and more successful association!

Meetings
2022 WSDLA Roundtable Retreat Wrap-Up
2022 WSDLA NW Roundtable Wrap-Up
Our roundtable retreat was held at the Tulalip Casino in Marysville the end of September. The resort was beautiful with lovely amenities and very helpful staff members! The turnout was better than expected. We covered some critical topics that impact every Washington State laboratory including changes in the states definition of "Use Tax," the handling of 3D printed hazardous waste, lab registration (required by the state) and many other important topics.
Our keynote speaker, Nichole Frandanisa, from The PNW Team, talked about JOY! Her definition was, "A predetermined choice of how you'll respond to any given circumstance." She said that a Stanford study of successful people found that only 12% held higher level degrees and the remaining 88% credited their success to attitude! She said JOY makes us resilient to negative circumstances and joyful people have statistically lower rates of high blood pressure and lower risk of heart disease. What's not to love about that?
Our industry is going through lots of changes. Employees are hard to find and retain, our costs keep rising, and it would be easy to get discouraged but let me encourage you to chose a culture of joy in your workspace! You'll never "out-joy" your employees and joy is contagious!
Mark your calendars and plan to attend our WSDLA Spring Meeting at the Embassy Suites in Bellevue on March 10-11, 2023. It's shaping up to be a great event!

UGH! More Taxes?
The State of Washington has determined that model work (both printed and analog), reduction copings, soft tissue duplications, diagnostic wax-ups, lab analogs, and many other items that are used to make our final restorations but not incorporated into the final product are subject to use tax. There is a lot more to it than that but needless to say, we should be in compliance and we must look carefully at our tax structure and adjust where necessary. You can reach out to Nathan Davis at [email protected] or 425-984-2584, for more information.

3D Printing & Hazardous Waste
Allison Crollard, from the University of Washington, presented on the potential hazards of 3D printing and what to do about the waste created from left-over resins and contaminated isopropyl alcohol. She said the studies to date show very little risk to employees from resin odor exposure but recommended we follow the SDS instructions for both resins and alcohol. She also said we aren't allowed to harden the residual resin by exposing it to light curing or sun because that is considered "treatment" and we aren't allowed to treat the materials. She recommended reaching out to the Department of Ecology for specific instructions. They can be reached at: Hazardous Waste and Toxics Reduction 360-407-6700.
