Dear WSMS Parents and Guardians,
We have our 7th and 8th grade cheerleaders on campus this week for their summer camp. They were masked up, socially distanced, and FULL OF ENERGY! When asked if they were ready for school to start back up, there was a resounding “YES!”.
Our teachers and staff will start their Academy Week schedule next week which involves their preparation for the upcoming school year. The excitement from each and every one of them is apparent. We are programmed to be around kids. We need the student interaction to have a sense of normalcy. So, to say we are ready is an HUGE understatement.
I want to begin giving you some insight into what the expectations will be for both students and staff during a school day once we have everyone back on campus beginning September 8. We will be observing and following the guidelines set forth by our state and federal agencies. Our number one goal is to keep our students and staff as safe as possible. Because of this, our students and staff will be required to wear a mask for the entire school day. The only times students will not be required to wear a mask is during lunch. During the lunch times, students will be socially distanced in three areas: the cafeteria, one of the gyms, and the courtyard (when weather permits). We will take every opportunity to keep students at a safe distance from each other. This includes allowing only three students in the restrooms at a time.
I want to make sure you are aware of a resource the district has available. This planning guide will answer many questions you may have this school year. The planning guide can be found here.

New Student and Parent Orientation - Thursday, August 13th @ 2:30 via Zoom
This Zoom session is for all families who are new to Lovejoy ISD. Students will have the opportunity to meet some of our current PALS students, as well as their fellow new students. During this Zoom session, students will take a virtual tour of our campus, learn about the basics of Powerschool and Google Classroom, and be introduced to our schedule format. A separate email will be coming from Mr. Parker with the Zoom link.
Technology Pickup - August 13th
Since the first three weeks will be online, we will once again offer to check out devices to any students who need one in order to join their classes online. If you have a device at home that your child can use, I encourage you to not check one out from the school as these devices are limited. The sign up to reserve your device can be found here. The deadline to sign up is Friday, August 7th at 12pm. Beginning September 8th, if your child will be returning to campus for face to face instruction, they will need to return their device on that day to the library. Technology pick up day will be next Thursday, August 13, from 9 AM-12 PM. If you have signed up for a device, you may pick up at any time during this window along the front curb of the school outside the front office.
Student Schedules - Available August 14th
Student schedules for the new school year will be available to view in PowerSchool next Friday, August 14th. Our counselors have worked diligently to ensure your student has received the best schedule possible.
Once received, please check for the following:
- The schedule has all 4 core classes (Math, English, Science, History)
- There is class listed every period
- Lunches are not shown on your schedule. Lunch times will be given to students the first day of school based on their 3rd and 4th period classes.
At this time, we will not be making any changes based on teacher/friend preferences. Elective classes are limited in size and some alternate elective classes were used to create schedules. Unfortunately, schedule changes for electives will be granted only on a limited basis. If you requested Band, Choir, Orchestra, Athletics, Cheer, Color Guard, Dance, or another application based class and do not see it on your schedule, please contact your child's counselor.
DEADLINE for Immunizations of 7th Grade Students
If you have not done so already, please send a copy of your child’s updated shot record to our school nurse, Gretchen Young, BY AUGUST 17.
As specified on the COVID-19 School Updates at theTexas Department of State Health Services website, "School vaccination rules are in effect regardless of whether the education is received via virtual learning or on campus".
For those students entering 7th grade, there are 2 additional immunizations required before starting 7th grade. They are:
TDaP booster (Tetanus booster)
Menactra (Meningococcal)
You may drop it off in person, send it through the mail to Willow Springs Middle School, send it by fax, or email our nurse, Gretchen Young at [email protected].
Walk the Springs - Wednesday, September 2nd
We are VERY excited to once again have our traditional “Walk the Springs” day. This year we will have “Walk the Springs” on Wednesday, September 2. It will be adjusted. This year buses will not run and the day will only be offered to our students who will attend classes in person beginning on September 8. Instead of having all students on campus at once, we will invite our 7th grade students in the morning with their first class beginning at 9:00 AM. They will visit all of their “A” Day classes and then all of their “B” Day classes before being dismissed at 11:32 AM. Our 8th graders will then follow the same bell schedule and visit all of the classes in the same order beginning at 1:30 PM and being dismissed at 4:00 PM. This event helps to ensure that the first day of school goes smoothly by providing the students with an opportunity to walk through their schedules, find their classrooms, meet their teachers, and reunite with their friends. This is a day designed for students only. You can access the “Walk The Springs” schedule here.

Summer Reading
Get ahead in 7th grade ELA!
All 7th graders begin the first several weeks of school with a grammar unit. In order to use our class time wisely, it would be very helpful if your student could learn the following list of words. The list can be learned with a catchy, little tune that can be downloaded and played throughout your home! Parents may even find themselves singing along. :) While this is not a requirement to have memorized before school begins, it will be an assignment the first week of school so having this list ready to belt out when school starts will give your student a sense of control and success as we begin the year in ELA! If you have ANY questions about this activity, please don’t hesitate to email [email protected] (7th ELA team lead). Thank you for your help and support! :)
2020-2021 School Supply Lists
Students may begin bringing school supplies to school the first day they return to campus. We will have collection boxes in the halls for community supplies like tissues, hand sanitizer and paper towels.
Bell Schedule
We have changed our bell schedule this year from a traditional 1st period-8th period schedule to a block schedule where students will visit half of their classes on “A” Days and the other half of their classes on “B” Days. This will decrease the amount of transition time students have in the halls which will decrease exposure to one another. We have also added a fourth lunch period which will decrease the number of students in each lunch period. You can view our bell schedule here.
Summer Mailer
Our summer mail will be sent home in the next few days. Final report cards, information from PTO, award certificates, etc will be included.
Not Returning to LISD Next Year?
If your student will not be returning to WSMS or Lovejoy High School in the fall, please email Carol Vik with your student’s name and where they will be attending school. Please click here for the withdrawal form that must be completed and returned to Carol Vik.
