Dear WSMS Parents and Guardians,

We will finally get into what the rest of the year will look like on Tuesday.  We will have classes that are all virtual, all face to face, or are blended.  No matter what your choice is, we will strive to provide excellence for your child.  If the first three weeks are any indication of how capable our teachers are, our students are in good hands

This newsletter is focused on making sure you and your child know the procedures on Tuesday so their anxiety level is minimal.  I do want to remind you to make sure your child has a mask when they enter the building.  If they forget theirs, we do have extra paper masks.

Also, the library and CAT will be closed before school initially.  As we move through the school year and additional procedures can be put into place, we will look for opportunities to open these areas up before school.

I hope you have a restful Labor Day weekend.  We will be anxiously awaiting the arrival of kids on Tuesday!

Respectfully,

Kevin

New Information

NEW! First Day of School Procedures - Tuesday is an A day
Arrival/Drop Off:
Students can begin to arrive at 8:00 AM and report to the cafeteria.  If you have extenuating circumstances and need to arrive earlier, please reach out to us so we can accommodate.  Parents will need to enter the campus as they always have, using the northeast drive (closest to Country Club Road).  They should pull around to the back of the campus where Mr. Parker will be directing traffic.  All students should stop by the cafeteria to pick up their schedule which will also include a bell schedule and campus map. Beginning at 8:15 AM all students can make their way to their first period class.  Teachers will be in the hallway to help students find their first class.  Click here for our new arrival/drop off map.

Breakfast:  Grab and go breakfast items will be available in the cafeteria from 8:00 AM-9:30 AM on A days (to accommodate athletics) and from 8:00 AM-8:40 AM on B days.  Students will be allowed to eat their breakfast in the cafeteria each day.

What Do Students Need to Bring?
  • Students will need to bring a water bottle each day.  Water fountains will not be accessible.
  • If your child has a computer or chromebook checked out to them from the school, they should begin bringing it each day along with the power cord to use in their classes.  PLEASE MAKE SURE IT IS CHARGED EACH NIGHT.
  • Remember, the cell phone policy states that students at WSMS are not allowed to have their cell phones during the day.  They do not need to bring school supplies at this time.
  • Students should bring their supplies requested by A day teachers on Tuesday and B day teachers on Wednesday.  Please click here for a copy of the school supply list.
  • Students may also bring any community supplies, and drop them off in the labeled boxes in the rotunda. These items are listed on the above school supply list.

Routines/Expectations:
  • Parents can drop off items for students in the front vestibule.  Please ring the bell.  Once the door is unlocked, you will place the items on the table and label them with the student's name.  Your child will be notified to pick up their item during the next passing period.
  • When checking out your child, you will ring the bell and Mrs. Striplin (the WSMS receptionist) will ask to see your id through the camera.  Once confirmed, your student will be called down and signed out by Mrs. Striplin.  They then will meet you at your car.
  • We will have very limited guests and volunteers on campus this year.  In the event you need to come onto campus, you will be asked to scan a QR code on the front door and fill out a Health Screening Questionnaire before entering.

Lunch/Cafeteria

Dismissal:
We anticipate there being more cars in the pick-up line this year.  Therefore, we will need to create more space so cars will not be on Lucas Road.  Student pick-up will now be in the front of the building.  Cars will still enter the campus from the northeast drive (closest to Country Club Road).  The car line will wrap around the back of the campus and will split with cars able to stay along the curb next to the courtyard or through the driveway back by the tennis courts.  Cars will stay in two lines along the west drive.  Mr. Parker will then merge traffic as cars pull to the front of the campus along the curb to load students.  Students will exit the building using doors that open to the front of the campus and find their car.  Staff will be available to help guide students during dismissal.

Once your child is in the car with you, you can pull away from the curb around other cars to exit the campus.

Please be patient as other parents and students learn our routines.  For the first few days, the car line will take a few minutes longer than normal.

ParentPortal Update Needed
The PowerSchool ParentPortal is now open for you to complete the online Enrollment & Student Information Forms. Please click here to access the Parent Portal. Parents will access the enrollment forms in their PowerSchool Parent Portal - left navigation panel - "Enrollment & Student Forms." Completion of these forms is required every year for every student. Please take a few minutes to update your contact information and other forms.

Student Spirit Shirts!
As part of the WSMS student experience, we would like to offer a spirit shirt for all 7th and 8th grade students.  These will be shirts that students can wear to school,  pep rallies, athletic events, and field trips.  During campus field trips and community service events, we will ask students to wear their spirit shirt to identify them as a WSMS student.  Spirit shirts may purchased by clicking here.

WSMS Yearbook Staff Needs Your Help
Hi WSMS families. Your yearbook staff, WSMS Rosette, is planning this year's yearbook and would love for you to share photos with us. Covid-19 may be changing our daily routines, but the yearbook staff wants to assure you that we will still have a top quality product that captures this year for your student.

Please consider emailing [email protected] (Rosette adviser, Beverly Zetsche) any photos of your WSMS student beginning in June and throughout the school year. The photos can be of your student at home learning, a family vacation, fun with friends, or any event that showcases your student.

Please include the following details in your email:
1. Who: First and Last name of the WSMS student and any other friends/family members in the photo
2. Where: the place or location of event in photo
3. When: the date of the event
4. What/Why: additional information about the event that you want to share

A Rosette member may contact the student for additional information if we are able to use the photo.

Since we have a virtual and eventually a face to face model, we are in the unique position to capture new modules of Leopard Life. Our goal is to focus on all student life on campus and outside of the school setting.  Thanks in advance for your support!
