Dear WSMS Parents and Guardians,

As January winds down, our students and teachers continue to work hard both in and out of the classroom.  It is always a pleasure to see their commitment and dedication in all that they do. Tomorrow will be an exciting day at WSMS.  We will begin our day with a winter pep rally to recognize our programs currently participating in winter competition. As part of our pep rally, we will be welcoming 6th graders to WSMS as part of their campus tour.  Please take a few minutes to view the information below about our 8th graders visiting Lovejoy High School and our winter pep rally tomorrow.

The district is excited to announce the 3rd Annual STEM Festival to be held on February 29th from 10:00-3:00 at Lovejoy High School. We hope you will mark this date on your calendar and make plans to attend this STEMtastic event with your family. The STEM Festival also offers extra opportunities, like the CANgineering Competition and T-Shirt Design Contest, in which students and families can participate. All information about the STEM Festival is linked below.

Eagle Scout Recognition
These 3 boys received their Eagle Scout rank at their Court of Honor on Sunday night.  Left to right Daniel Haas, William Fry, and Noah Marsden. These are their projects...

Daniel Haas built a bridge on one of the heavily used trails at the Heard Nature and Science Museum.  This project will help visitors to enjoy nature walks and safely explore parts of the grounds.

William Fry disinfected the fleet of 50 Lovejoy ISD school buses.  The project was completed over a holiday when all the buses were at the barn and included over 60 hours of labor.

Noah Marsden built two feeding and watering troughs for goats.  These troughs were donated to Camp for All's on-site petting zoo.  Camp for All is a summer camp for children with special needs that our Boy Scout troop has volunteered at for many summers.

Congratulations boys!

Student Attendance
One of our continuing focus areas for this year is to increase our student and teacher daily attendance on campus.  Research shows that the more students are in class with their teacher, the more they will learn over the course of the school year.  The more students learn, the more success and confidence they will have in middle school. To promote this, we will be recognizing students and staff who have perfect attendance during each six weeks.  Please assist us by working with your son or daughter to ensure they are getting enough rest, eating a healthy diet, and are taking care of themselves overall. In addition, our new state accountability system uses student attendance as criteria for evaluating the performance of schools.  We also receive state funding based on our "Average Daily Attendance" of students that are present after 10:00 AM. As you begin to plan out of town trips this spring, please consider keeping your children in school through the Friday before each break. Let's work together to encourage our students to be in class every day.

2rd Nine-Weeks Student Perfect Attendance
Congratulations to our students who had perfect attendance during the 2nd nine-weeks.

First Semester Student Perfect Attendance
Congratulations to our students who had perfect attendance for the entire first semester.

AIM Presentation Survey Results for WSMS
In December, all students participated in the AIM for Success program. AIM for Success is a sexual education program that teaches abstinence as the best way to avoid negative consequences of early sexual relationships, and more importantly, the best way for students to reach their personal goals. At the end of the presentation, students completed a survey to help our school and community better understand our current students thoughts on the program and involvement in sexual relationships. Please use this survey as a tool to continue discussions at home with your child about the benefits of abstinence!

Students feeling under the weather?
As you know, it is prime cold and flu season. To help best manage our students and to keep in line with the policy in the Student Handbook, if students are not feeling well at school, they need to be checked out through the school clinic. The student must be fever free (Temperature of 99.9 or less for 24 hours without the use of over the counter medications to keep the temperature down) and must NOT have vomited or had diarrhea in the last 24 hours. Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

Reporting an Incident at WSMS
One of our top priorities at Willow Springs Middle School is to ensure the safety of all of our students.  Our most important asset in this is the eyes and ears our students can provide us on campus. We will begin using the Safe Schools Alert System this year for students and parents to report incidents they are aware of happening.  You can access the system by going to  www.lovejoyisd.net .  Under Quick Links click on "REPORT IT!"  You will have four ways to submit an incident.  Furthermore, you will receive an access code to follow the progression of how an incident is being handled.
