Dear WSMS Parents and Guardians,

Our schedule is starting to fill up on campus.  We have our PSAT this Thursday for 8th graders, Club Day on Friday, and Spelling Bee tryouts on Monday after school for both 7th and 8th graders.  It's fantastic to see students be able to participate in activities they are passionate about and experience success in the things they do.

Speaking of experiencing success, with almost 100 more students coming back on campus last week our car line at the end of the day was not a successful experience.  We are making a slight change.  Once cars begin moving, we will be filtering all cars along the curb to pick students.  As with most things that involve a large amount of people, we need everyone to play a part in that success.  It is extremely important for you to pull all the way forward along the curb on the west side of campus.  Even if that means your child has to walk a few extra steps to allow you to pull up, this will let more cars load at once rather than waiting on one car to load and slowing down the process.  We will also be encouraging students to be as close to the sidewalk as possible so cars are not waiting around for students to make a long walk to load into their car.  With these adjustments, we will be much more efficient.

Have a great week!

Respectfully,

Kevin

NEW! Lovejoy Letter Campaign: October 19 - October 30
Lovejoy Family!!  The 7th annual Lovejoy Letter Campaign for teachers and staff members has begun!  Many of you are familiar with this beloved tradition, but for those of you who are not, it is the time of year when we write appreciation letters for each of our teachers and staff members across the district.

The letters do not have to be elaborate or lengthy. The goal is just for people to write a note of thanks to show appreciation to their teachers, the staff and administration in our district.  It is the opportunity for us to take the time to let each person who makes a difference for us throughout the school day know how much we value them.

Please clearly label the envelope with the staff/teacher's name and LLC (Lovejoy Letter Campaign) and return the letter to the box located at a specified location of each campus no later than Friday November 13th.  Please feel free to share this message as we spread the word about the campaign. We do not want to add any extra burden to our kids and parents, but we do want to share how much we appreciate our teachers and staff - especially this year in these very unusual times!

NEW! Club Day - Friday, October 23
Our first Club Day of the year is this Friday.  Students signed up for two clubs of their choosing this week and will find out on Thursday which club they will be attending.  There are some clubs, such as Extreme Club, where students are allowed to bring items to campus that day.  We will still expect students to wear their masks while participating in Club Day.  Click here for a copy of the bell schedule.

NEW! National Prescription Take Back Day - October 24th, 10am - 2pm
Did you know the non-medical use of Rx drugs ranks second only to marijuana as the most common form of drug abuse in America? The majority of teens abusing Rx drugs get them from family and friends - and the home medicine cabinet. We encourage all WSMS families to take their old and/or unused prescriptions this Saturday, October 24th to a center near you. There are locations in Fairview, Allen, McKinney, Plano, Murphy, and Wylie! Click on the link  for the location nearest you: https://takebackday.dea.gov/

UPDATED! Picture Proofs and Picture Retakes
Picture proofs have been received and have been distributed to students through their math classes last week.  If your student is virtual for Q2, please stop by the front office to pick them up.  On the proof itself, you will see ordering information.

Picture Retakes will be on November 6th.  This will be for students who missed the original picture day, new students and for those that wish to have their picture retaken. Students on campus will have the option to come have their picture retaken before school, during an elective class or during their lunch period.  For virtual students, a sign up will be going out with time slots, as we did originally.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact Leslee Cox at

This assessment is an opportunity for students, parents, and teachers to assess a student's math, writing, and reading skills needed to be college-ready. For more information on the College Board's PSAT 8/9 test, you can visit this website. The PSAT 8/9 assessment will begin promptly at 9am on Thursday, October 22nd and will last approximately 3.5 hours. 8th graders may want to bring a bottle of water for testing. This will be an online test, and WSMS counselors will review scores with students in the spring.

Attention 8TH GRADE PARENTS - Deadline for recognition ads, November 13th
8th grade yearbook recognition ads are also now on sale! The deadline is Friday 11-13. You can purchase and create your senior recognition ad online via the link below as well. Note all 8th grade recognition ads must be paid for and created online by Friday 11-13.

AIM for Success
This program will be offered again this year to WSMS students both in person and virtually on November 30 and December 1. The parent portion will be available for viewing online on November 18.

The PTO is able to schedule and fund these programs because of membership dues and donations from our awesome parent community. This year, 100% of those funds stay in Lovejoy instead of a significant portion being sent to the state and national PTA. Haven't joined yet?  Use this link and once you've created an account you can sign up for any Lovejoy PTO.

WSMS Career Day ~ SAVE THE DATE, February 11, 2021, 9:15 - 12:50pm

WSMS Mentoring Program
Willow Springs Middle School is looking for positive adult role models to mentor students in our Mentoring Program. The ideal candidate is willing to share knowledge, skills, and possesses humanitarian qualities. Other merits for a mentor are commitment to community, openness to diversity, the desire to positively impact our youth, and an opportunity to guide and teach.  The WSMS Mentoring Program promotes the well-being of the mentee by providing a role model that can support the student academically, socially, emotionally, and in general.

Interested volunteers please contact Kathy Stone at [email protected]

WSMS PTO

Did you know that October is National Principal Appreciation Month? At WSMS we are very fortunate to have Kevin Parker, along with Rebecca May and Rachael Merrick, as our Principals. If you see them, please make sure to give them a big "thank you" for all they do to educate, enrich and protect our kids!

Make sure to check out information on the Lovejoy Letter Campaign in this email. This is an important way for us to show gratitude to our teachers and staff as we approach Thanksgiving. Letters are due November 9.

Finally, watch for an important announcement in next week's email about an exciting opportunity for parents who drive their kids to school!

Have a great week!
