Dear WSMS Parents and Guardians,

This week has a different feel to it.  It may have something to do with staff and students needing a break and seeing there is one in the near future.  I want to remind you of a few things in regards to the purpose of Final Exams at WSMS:

  1. Final Exam Reviews are an opportunity to re-teach objectives from the first half of the year. Teachers should prepare to spend extra time on low-performing objectives based on the data from benchmarks and/or unit tests and quizzes.
  2.  Final Exams are a formative assessment tool designed to re-assess state objectives from the first half of the year. The data from final exams is used for intervention and planning of the spring curriculum. Final Exams are not a "gotcha" for students who have not learned the material.
  3. Final Exams are an opportunity to provide students with a standardized testing environment similar to what they will experience on STAAR tests in the Spring.

Also, please see below regarding needed communication from you in response to positive COVID cases you may experience over break.  We will need to know about these to ensure proper quarantine time frames.

Last Friday, the WSMS PTO sponsored a webinar that included information about sexting and vaping amongst middle school students.  The link to view this webinar can be found in the PTO section below if you would like to view it.

No matter how you choose to celebrate the holiday season, I hope it is filled with joy.

Have a great Break!!

Kevin

New/Updated Information

REMINDER! Lost and Found - Donating December 17th
Please encourage your son or daughter to look through the lost and found and claim any sweatshirts, shoes, hats, etc. they may have left behind. All lost and found items are located outside of the library.  Students can visit the lost and found before or after school or during their lunch.  All items not claimed by December 17th will be donated to area shelters.

REMINDER! Early Release/Student Holiday
On Thursday, December 17th, students will be taking their 4th period final exam from 8:45 a.m.-10:20 a.m. and 8th period exam from 10:24 a.m.-12:10 p.m.  School will dismiss at 12:10 p.m., but for those who would like to have lunch at school or need to ride the bus home, they will go to the cafeteria.  Buses will begin running at 12:45pm.

Friday, December 18th - Tuesday, January 5th is Winter Break. School will resume on Wednesday, January 6.

NEW! Reporting COVID-19 Over the Holiday Break
It is inevitable that more cases of COVID will arise over the break.  Here are a couple of questions you may want answered:
  • What should a parent do if they need to report their child has tested positive for COVID  over break? Parents will continue to notify the campus administration and nurse over break via email regarding any confirmed lab positive cases.
  • Will the COVID dashboard be updated over break? Yes, as the district is notified of any lab positive cases over break, the dashboard will be updated.

NEW! Final Exams Make Up
If a student was unable to take a final exam this week, they can make it up tomorrow during 4th or 8th period class time (if they do not have another final) or after winter break on Wednesday, January 6th through Friday, January 8th. Please feel free to contact your son or daughter's teacher to schedule a time to make up a final exam.

NEW! Final Exam Grades
Final exam grades will be posted in PowerSchool on Friday, January 8th. Final Exams are a summative assessment over material that has been covered during the first semester. Teachers will be closing out their grades for the first semester once final exams have been completed. The summative data from final exams will provide teachers with a road map for instructional planning and intervention during the spring semester.

REMINDER! Attn: 7th Grade Families with Virtual Learners
In January, all 7th grade students take an Algebra Readiness Test. The results of this test will be used for upcoming registration and will give a recommendation for math placement in 8th grade. All 7th grade students, with the exception of current 7th Grade GT students, are required to take the test. Because the test is a standardized and timed test, all students must take the exam on campus.

The test will be given to 7th grade virtual students at WSMS on January 15th at 9:00 am and 1:30 pm. To ensure we are practicing social distancing, please sign up for the particular time you are interested in attending. Click here to sign up.  If you have any questions about the upcoming test, please contact your child's counselor.

8th Grade XC Meet Results
From Coach Littlefield - Girls:
This was a fun one to watch. If you saw the leaders in the race finish - that was exciting! We had Ava and Campbell in that lead pack the last 800 meters and they took off with about 300 meters to go. I loved the way Campbell challenged Ava - what courage!!! Ava accepted the challenge and the 2 finished neck and neck to take the 1-2 spots! I am happy with this group of girls and excited about getting them on my high school team next year.
