Dear WSMS Parents and Guardians,

The days are full on campus both this week and next at WSMS.  Students have received their final exam reviews through Google and are working through those to help prepare for Finals Week next week.  We have encouraged students to not only study for their exam, but to begin studying now instead of having to experience the dreaded "Cram Session" next week.  Finals can be overwhelming simply because it is the first time for many to have to organize their time in this way.  Fear not!  We are here to guide and assist our students.

Speaking of Finals Week, please take a moment to look at the bell schedule below and pay special attention to the schedule on Thursday.  Early release is at 12:45 PM on Thursday, December 17.  However, once the 8th period exam is completed at 12:10 PM we will begin allowing students to dismiss in the car line.  Any student not leaving at that time will go to the cafeteria for lunch.  Buses will depart at the regular time of 12:45 PM.

The last thing I want to share with you is a new tardy policy we will begin implementing after the break.  I shared this with students yesterday in a video and will continue to remind them.  One of the responsibilities I strongly feel we have as a school is to prepare students with habits that will help their success throughout the highschool years and beyond.  The other responsibility we have is recognizing when these habits are not being practiced and putting a structure to improve them.  Well, I have definitely recognized the need for some structures around tardies.  Basically, students will get four "free" tardies each quarter.  For each tardy over their four "free" tardies, they will be assigned one hour of Friday Night School.  It goes without saying students are more prepared and perform better when they are on time and not having to play catch up if they arrive late to class.  If you have any questions or concerns regarding this, please feel free to reach out to me.  I'd be happy to discuss.

Have a great week!

Kevin

NEW! "Stop The Bleed" Student Training in the Spring
We had such an overwhelming response and turnout for the two training sessions we offered, that we will be offering more training sessions come 2nd semester.  Be on the lookout for sign ups in the coming newsletters when we return from Winter Break.

NEW! WSMS PTO Parent Presentation - Friday, December 11th
When my own children were in middle school, there were many times I found myself wondering what was happening in their life I didn't know about.  What were they like at school?  What kind of decisions were they making?  What issues were they facing?  The WSMS PTO is hosting a series of parent presentations throughout the rest of this school year to help you connect with your child and hopefully spark conversation that gives you insight into their world.

The first of these will be Friday, December 11 and it will focus on what issues are your middle schoolers facing at WSMS.  There are two main focal points to this presentation: Sexting and Vaping.

Before you say, "My child is responsible and I don't have to worry about them,"  this presentation is to educate you on the world your child has to navigate when they have a phone in their hand.  Every parent can benefit from this.  Along with myself, we will have Noelle McCormick (district social worker), a representative from Collin County Health Department who works with local youth and educating parents, and a local law enforcement officer.

If you have any questions specifically related to the topics above, please submit them using this form.  We will do our best to answer as many of them as possible.

You can virtually join us at 1:00 PM on Friday, December 11 by using the Zoom link.  Should you not be able to join virtually, this will be recorded and posted on our website for later viewing.

REMINDER! Fine Arts Festival Performances and Galleries: Saturday, December 12th - Thursday, December 17th

REMINDER! Lost and Found - Donating December 17th
Please encourage your son or daughter to look through the lost and found and claim any sweatshirts, shoes, hats, etc. they may have left behind. All lost and found items are located outside of the library.  Students can visit the lost and found before or after school or during their lunch.  All items not claimed by December 17th will be donated to area shelters.

NEW! Attn: 7th Grade Families with Virtual Learners
In January, all 7th grade students take an Algebra Readiness Test. The results of this test will be used for upcoming registration and will give a recommendation for math placement in 8th grade. All 7th grade students, with the exception of current 7th Grade GT students, are required to take the test. Because the test is a standardized and timed test, all students must take the exam on campus.

The test will be given to 7th grade virtual students at WSMS on January 15th at 9:00 am and 1:30 pm. To ensure we are practicing social distancing, please sign up for the particular time you are interested in attending. Click here to sign up.  If you have any questions about the upcoming test, please contact your child's counselor.

7th Grade XC Meet Results
From Coach Littlefield - Girls:  I am pretty amazed by our girls today. Lots of great races... but even better is the way they compete and challenge themselves. We dominated the field and scored only 18 points! (15 is a perfect score!) All of these girls had a really special season. I have enjoyed watching their growth, and I hope they had a great experience with Cross Country! It's not always easy... it's a lot of "behind the scenes" work, but the reward of achieving your best is so awesome. I'm looking forward to the future with them! It was also cool to see several of the 8th graders out there supporting them!! It will be their turn next Tuesday!

Top 10 earning Medals: (9 in the top 10!!)
Tatum Novicke - District Champion
Jocelyn Chapman - District Runner-Up
Ella York - 4th
Allie Benefield - 5th
Grace Peay - 6th
Lauren Gonzales - 7th
Peyton Novicke - 8th
Bridget Bernal - 9th
Harper Jaynes - 10th

From Coach Kelly - Boys: Congrats to our 7th Grade Boys XC Team on winning the District Championship yesterday! It's been a great season and a lot of fun working with this group. All of their hard work and dedication paid off. This year may have looked different than previous years, but as a coaching staff we went the extra mile to ensure our runners had opportunities to race and compete throughout the fall. It was a lot of work but it was also a lot of fun getting to see the runners race. I think all of those racing opportunities helped keep the runners motivated through a difficult year. It is something we will definitely consider doing again next year for our middle school team.
