Dear WSMS Parents and Guardians,
This week is School Counselor Appreciation Week. I want to take a moment to recognize Kathy Stone and Carey Miller at Willow Springs Middle School. They have a very big job and each goes well beyond what is asked of them. If you have an opportunity to reach out to them, please let them know how much our community appreciates what they do for our students at WSMS.
Each year our 8th graders take a day to visit the high school to begin getting acclimated to what will become their new school home for the next four years. We have traditionally referred to this day as "Bump Up Day". Because of the current circumstances, we will instead do this day virtually and show them a video created by the high school. Our plan is to show this video this Thursday during SEL time around 10:15 AM.
February 11 will be our next early release day. We will dismiss in much the same way we did just before Christmas Break by beginning our car line at 12:10 PM. Any student who is staying to ride the bus or to eat lunch will go to the cafeteria at that time. Buses will leave for their routes at 12:45 PM. February 11 is a B Day. Students will go to all of their B Day classes for a shortened amount of time, approximately 48 minutes for each class. You can find the bell schedule below.

NEW! 8th Grade Parents Only - PSAT Results
If your student took the PSAT in October, their personalized score reports will be passed out during 3rd period on Thursday, Feb. 4. Please go over the report with your child. If you chose to create a College Board Account, it is imperative that you save the username/ password. Students will need the username/ password in HS. Virtual students: Your reports will be mailed home on Thursday.

NEW! AIM for Success Student Survey Results
In December, all 7th and 8th grade students viewed and participated in the AIM for Success Abstinence program sponsored by WSMS and the WSMS PTO. At the end of the program, students could voluntarily participate in an anonymous survey about the choices they make regarding their health and sex. Please click here for survey results. Young Men's Service League - Lovejoy Chapter
Ready to take the next step? What is YMSL (Young Men's Service League) all about? Come join us on February 10th, 2021 and learn all about our Lovejoy YMSL Chapter! Four years of high school goes by incredibly fast and finding time to spend together with your teenage son gets harder. When you join YMSL, you commit to spending quality time with your son serving your community. So join us on February 10th, 2021 at 7:00 pm, as we host a Covid friendly Prospective New Member Zoom Meeting. Applications will be open to moms with sons in Class of 2025, incoming 9th graders (currently in 8th grade). Meet The Leopards Baseball/Softball Middle School Event
Early Release - Thursday, February 11th
Students will be released at 12:15 pm. Lunch will be served in the WSMS Cafeteria for those riding the bus. Bus routes will begin at 1:00pm. Students who have their own transportation can leave at 12:15 p.m. Please click here for a copy of the Early Release Bell Schedule.
Upcoming Student Holidays/Bad Weather Day
Friday, January 12th, is a student holiday and Monday, February 15th is as well, due to not having any bad weather days to make up.
WSMS Cheer Tryout Information
Cheer Tryout Clinic - March 24-25th The tryout clinic is not mandatory to tryout for WSMS Cheer. Students who are new to the WSMS Cheer program trying out for 7th or 8th-grade cheer will meet in the main gym at WSMS from 4:30-6:00 pm on March 24th and 25th to practice and prepare for tryouts. All cheerleaders need to learn the tryout material posted on the cheer website before attending the tryout clinic. This material will be posted one week before tryouts on March 17th. In order to reduce numbers and increase social distancing, returning cheerleaders will NOT attend the afterschool clinic. Instead, returning cheerleaders will receive the same clinic during cheer class. C heer website: www.tinyurl.com/wsmscheer Official Cheer Tryout- March 26th In-person tryouts will occur on March 26th from 4:30-9:00 pm. We will assign time slots to each student for tryouts to reduce numbers and increase social distancing on campus. Masks must be worn during tryouts. Students will check in ten minutes before their assigned time and leave immediately after their tryout. Parents will wait outside the gym for their students. If a student chooses to submit a virtual video tryout, the video must be submitted no later than March 26th at 8:00 am so the videos can be shown to the judges. Any student who does not submit a virtual tryout video by the deadline, or attend the in-person tryout will automatically be placed on the C team for the 2021-2022 school year.
"Stop The Bleed" Student Training in the Spring
We had such an amazing response to this in the Fall, that we are bringing it back for the Spring. If your student was unable to attend one of the previous sessions, make sure you sign up soon.
This program is a difference maker and will allow students to possess a critical skill set that can be carried with them throughout their entire lives. Stop The Bleed training allows students to learn how to administer initial care in a life threatening situation to an injured individual.
Although this training is not mandatory for our students, we are required by state law (86RHB496) to offer it to all students in grade levels 7-12. If you choose to sign your child up for this free training, keep in mind they will be exposed to photographs of injured individuals that will contain severe injuries. Students will learn how to tend to laceration, broken bones, puncture wounds, etc. Students will also learn skills such as applying a tourniquet, applying pressure to injuries and bandaging an injured individual.
Our safety and security foundation is built on the "Force Multiply" concept. We believe in empowering our teachers, staff members, students, parents and community members with knowledge that can save lives!

Please begin marking your calendars for the Spring 2020 STAAR Testing Dates. If possible, try to avoid STAAR Assessment Dates when making appointments for your children. In order to control our environment as best we can, we are requiring attendees to pre-purchase tickets. The link to do this for the WSMS home games this week can be found here. All middle school football games will be played at the high school this year in order to increase capacity.

The only equipment the girls need to bring with them are a pair of cleats, if they have them, shin guards, and water. We will provide balls, bibs, and cones.
