Dear WSMS Parents and Guardians,

Last week really threw a kink in our calendar leading up to Spring Break.  I want to make sure you have the updated timeline of registration events to ensure nothing sneaks up on you.  Please take a moment to review the registration calendar below.  Our 7th graders and 8th graders will both watch registration videos tomorrow during SEL time.  The purpose of these videos is to inform them about the classes that are available to them next year.  The links to view those videos as well as the parent registration videos are below as well.

We planned to have our February PTO parent presentation meeting last week but, for obvious reasons, had to cancel.  With the end of February fast approaching, we will not have a parent presentation for the month of February.  Our March parent presentation meeting will be on March 5 and is titled "Signs of Suicide".  This will be recorded for those who can't attend the zoom meeting.

Also, the window is open for parents to change their child's Learning Environment for the last quarter of the school year. Information on how to do this can be found in the email below. If you would like for them to continue with their current selection then you do not need to do anything. The deadline to make a change from your child's current selection is 5:00 p.m. on Monday, March 1st. As a reminder, students who have selected "On-Campus" as their environment are expected to attend all classes each day unless they are quarantined or isolated for COVID.

Have a great week!

Kevin

Upcoming Dates

WSMS Cheer Tryout Clinic - March 24-25th
The tryout clinic is not mandatory to tryout for WSMS Cheer. Students who are new to the WSMS Cheer program trying out for 7th or 8th-grade cheer will meet in the main gym at WSMS from 4:30-6:00 pm on March 24th and 25th to practice and prepare for tryouts. All cheerleaders need to learn the tryout material posted on the cheer website before attending the tryout clinic. This material will be posted one week before tryouts on March 17th. In order to reduce numbers and increase social distancing, returning cheerleaders will NOT attend the afterschool clinic. Instead, returning cheerleaders will receive the same clinic during cheer class. Cheer website: www.tinyurl.com/wsmscheer

WSMS Official Cheer Tryout- March 26th
In-person tryouts will occur on March 26th from 4:30-9:00 pm. We will assign time slots to each student for tryouts to reduce numbers and increase social distancing on campus. Masks must be worn during tryouts. Students will check in ten minutes before their assigned time and leave immediately after their tryout. Parents will wait outside the gym for their students. If a student chooses to submit a virtual video tryout, the video must be submitted no later than March 26th at 8:00 am so the videos can be shown to the judges. Any student who does not submit a virtual tryout video by the deadline, or attend the in-person tryout will automatically be placed on the C team for the 2021-2022 school year.

"Stop The Bleed" Student Training in the Spring
We had such an amazing response to this in the Fall, that we are bringing it back for the Spring.  If your student was unable to attend one of the previous sessions, make sure you sign up soon.

This program is a difference maker and will allow students to possess a critical skill set that can be carried with them throughout their entire lives.  Stop The Bleed training allows students to learn how to administer initial care in a life threatening situation to an injured individual.

Although this training is not mandatory for our students, we are required by state law (86RHB496) to offer it to all students in grade levels 7-12.  If you choose to sign your child up for this free training, keep in mind they will be exposed to photographs of injured individuals that will contain severe injuries.  Students will learn how to tend to laceration, broken bones, puncture wounds, etc.  Students will also learn skills such as applying a tourniquet, applying pressure to injuries and bandaging an injured individual.

Our safety and security foundation is built on the "Force Multiply" concept.  We believe in empowering our teachers, staff members, students, parents and community members with knowledge that can save lives!
If you would like to register your child for this training, please click on the link below.  Each class is limited to 40 spots.  The sessions will be led by LISD security personnel.

2020 STAAR Testing Dates - Mark Your Calendars
Please begin marking your calendars for the Spring 2020 STAAR Testing Dates. If possible, try to avoid STAAR Assessment Dates when making appointments for your children.
