Dear WSMS Parents and Guardians,

Next week will be an exciting week for WSMS students. On Tuesday and Wednesday, our 8th grade students will be participating in a campus wide service learning project. This directly aligns with the LISD Graduate Profile Pillar of Working for Justice Through Community Service. Please see below for details.

Also, we hope to see you at the STEM festival this Saturday at LHS from 10am - 3pm. The STEM festival will include excellent demonstrations from various organizations and guest speakers in the field. Please see below for more details.

WSMS Service Learning Project - March 3rd & 4th
On Tuesday and Wednesday, March 3rd & 4th, all WSMS students will be participating in our Annual Spring Service Learning Project. In an effort to beautify WSMS and to encourage student ownership, this year*s project will take place on campus. This year's theme is Leopards By Nature.

All 7th grade students (Tuesday, March 3rd) and all 8th grade students (Wednesday, March 4th) will participate in a campus wide project through their Science class.  Students will be developing beds for native plants and flowers in front of our school and near our back garden. Prior to this project, students will receive an introductory lesson on the importance of native plants, habitats, and ecosystems to their community and school.

Below is a quick video from Mrs. Perez, about how science classes are preparing for the upcoming service learning project.

What to wear? Come to school ready to roll up your sleeves and get dirty. Please wear Leopards by Nature t-shirt and comfortable pants. If your child did not purchase a t-shirt, a  WSMS or Lovejoy t-shirt is preferred, comfortable closed-toed shoes (they might get dirty...if you have boots or old athletic shoes, that's perfect) and a jacket/sweatshirt. We will provide gardening gloves for all students.

Rakes - Have a rake at home we can borrow next week? We need more...If you put your last name on duct tape on handle, we'll make sure you get it back after service learning. Please bring any labeled rakes to front office Friday, Feb. 28th or Monday, March 2nd!

In case of inclement weather, we will reschedule our service learning project to the week after Spring Break. Let's hope for good weather next week!

We are all Leopards by Nature. Thank you to everyone who has already helped us grow at Willow Springs.

Several local businesses have helped make this possible. We want to recognize these organizations and thank them for making our service learning and campus beautification efforts possible. (Kasey is sending logos if you want to include them this week).

We look forward to a fun and fruitful service learning project next week!

Seeking Parent Input for New WSMS Principal Profile - Meeting, March 5
As part of our search process for the next principal of WSMS we are seeking parental input about the characteristics/attributes of the candidate we should select.  This "principal profile" allows us to align our selection process and find the new leader that will be the best fit to lead WSMS.

Please plan to attend our meeting opportunity on Thursday, March 5th at 1:30 pm in room C102 at WSMS.  For those unable to attend this meeting we will also have an online form available for input or you are welcome to email Dennis Muizers, Assistant Superintendent, at
[email protected] as another avenue to provide your valuable input.

Campus principals are vitally important leaders in our district and in our community.  Your input is critical to our rigorous selection process in Lovejoy and we greatly appreciate you making time for your voice to be heard.

Campus Information and Reminders

Bringing Your Student Lunch
As a reminder, parents can bring a lunch of their choice to their own son or daughter but are prohibited under the Texas Administrative Code to bring lunch for other students. For example, we have had parents bring Chick-fil-a for their son and three of his friends. This is a violation of the Texas Administrative Code. In addition, if a parent brings food for other students, the parents of the other student may object to their child being provided a lunch from an outside restaurant due to diet or medical concerns of their child. In the future, if a parent brings lunch for more than one student, we will inform the parent that SCMS and LISD are only permitted to allow parents to deliver food for their own student. For more information about the Texas Administrative Code, please click here . Thank you for your cooperation in supporting the nutrition and safety of our students.

WSMS One Act Play UIL Update
Congratulations to WSMS Theatre Productions Class for taking 1st place overall in One Act Play competition on Tuesday with their show The Yellow Boat by David Saar! Winter Illness
Flu season is in full swing and we just wanted to remind you of the District Policies about students attending school with illnesses. Students MUST STAY HOME from school if they have experienced vomiting, diarrhea, or a fever of 100.0 or higher in the last 24 hours, without the use of medications to lower the fever, or stop the vomiting or diarrhea. This will help prevent the spread of illnesses to other students and staff as well as prevent your own child from contracting another illness since their immune system is already still low and trying to recover from their previous illness. Please read the attached letter about Flu from the CDC by clicking  HERE .

PowerSchool App
The PowerSchool app is now available in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. You use the same PowerSchool online login. Enter the District code NJBC.

Reporting an Incident at WSMS
One of our top priorities at Willow Springs Middle School is to ensure the safety of all of our students.  Our most important asset in this is the eyes and ears our students can provide us on campus. We will begin using the Safe Schools Alert System this year for students and parents to report incidents they are aware of happening.  You can access the system by going to  www.lovejoyisd.net .  Under Quick Links click on "REPORT IT!"  You will have four ways to submit an incident.  Furthermore, you will receive an access code to follow the progression of how an incident is being handled.

WSMS PTA

PTA vs PTO Q&A

Q1. So what will change / stay the same?

CHANGE- The name will change. We will no longer operate under the governance of the Texas PTA. SAME - The by laws, standing rules, budget process, board/chairs roles will remain the same. We keep 100% of our dues. Campus PTOs will continue to be supported by the Council of  PTOs.

Q2. Where does the current PTA's money go?

The remaining funds at the end of the fiscal year may be donated to the new PTO. (If Council receives its designation as a 501c3 organization in time, it can help transition funds from PTAs to PTOs. If not, a plan B will be in place.)

Q3. Does the LISD administration support this change?

Yes. We have full support of the principals and Dr. Goddard.

Q4. What is the timeline to make this change?

A PTA may be formed at any time. A school can have 2 organizations operating simultaneously. We hope to be transitioned by the end of June.

Q5. Will the new campus PTOs have a governing body?

Yes. A new Lovejoy Council of PTOs was formed on February 20th. The newly  formed Council will support the Lovejoy PTAs and PTOs.

If you have any other pressing questions please feel free to reach out so that I can answer those for you.  Please keep your eyes open for a special meeting to be called with Texas PTA to make the final vote on whether we proceed further in the future as a PTO.  You can feel free to call or text me at 214-534-6200 or email me at [email protected]

Reminders
To have reminders sent to your phone about donations needed, volunteer time, PTA meetings and parent presentations please text @wsmspta2019 to 81010
