Dear WSMS Parents and Guardians,

We have entered registration season and tomorrow the counselors, along with some special guests from the district, will be hosting parent webinars (more information below).  You will receive valuable information for you to consider as you and your child(ren) discuss classes for the 2021-2022 school year.  The recordings of these webinars will be posted on our website for you to view at your convenience as well.

Thursday is an early release day (bell schedule below) and we will officially dismiss from school at 12:45 PM.  However, our 8th period dismisses at 12:10 PM and we will begin our car line at that time.  Any students who need to eat lunch or are riding the bus will go to the cafeteria at 12:10 PM and be dismissed at 12:45 PM.

One more note about traffic.  I was approached by the officer who works Lucas Road in the mornings.  He was concerned about the number of drivers he sees on their phones.  Please make sure as you enter the school zone in the morning and the afternoons that you remain off of your phones until you exit the school zone.  Protecting your children is the most important job we have at Willow Springs.

I hope you and your family have a great four day weekend!

Kevin

Cheer Tryout Clinic - March 24-25th
The tryout clinic is not mandatory to tryout for WSMS Cheer. Students who are new to the WSMS Cheer program trying out for 7th or 8th-grade cheer will meet in the main gym at WSMS from 4:30-6:00 pm on March 24th and 25th to practice and prepare for tryouts. All cheerleaders need to learn the tryout material posted on the cheer website before attending the tryout clinic. This material will be posted one week before tryouts on March 17th. In order to reduce numbers and increase social distancing, returning cheerleaders will NOT attend the afterschool clinic. Instead, returning cheerleaders will receive the same clinic during cheer class. Cheer website: www.tinyurl.com/wsmscheer

Official Cheer Tryout- March 26th
In-person tryouts will occur on March 26th from 4:30-9:00 pm. We will assign time slots to each student for tryouts to reduce numbers and increase social distancing on campus. Masks must be worn during tryouts. Students will check in ten minutes before their assigned time and leave immediately after their tryout. Parents will wait outside the gym for their students. If a student chooses to submit a virtual video tryout, the video must be submitted no later than March 26th at 8:00 am so the videos can be shown to the judges. Any student who does not submit a virtual tryout video by the deadline, or attend the in-person tryout will automatically be placed on the C team for the 2021-2022 school year.

"Stop The Bleed" Student Training in the Spring
We had such an amazing response to this in the Fall, that we are bringing it back for the Spring.  If your student was unable to attend one of the previous sessions, make sure you sign up soon.

This program is a difference maker and will allow students to possess a critical skill set that can be carried with them throughout their entire lives.  Stop The Bleed training allows students to learn how to administer initial care in a life threatening situation to an injured individual.

Although this training is not mandatory for our students, we are required by state law (86RHB496) to offer it to all students in grade levels 7-12.  If you choose to sign your child up for this free training, keep in mind they will be exposed to photographs of injured individuals that will contain severe injuries.  Students will learn how to tend to laceration, broken bones, puncture wounds, etc.  Students will also learn skills such as applying a tourniquet, applying pressure to injuries and bandaging an injured individual.

Our safety and security foundation is built on the "Force Multiply" concept.  We believe in empowering our teachers, staff members, students, parents and community members with knowledge that can save lives!
If you would like to register your child for this training, please click on the link below.  Each class is limited to 40 spots.  The sessions will be led by LISD security personnel.

2020 STAAR Testing Dates - Mark Your Calendars
Please begin marking your calendars for the Spring 2020 STAAR Testing Dates. If possible, try to avoid STAAR Assessment Dates when making appointments for your children. This allows your child to have adequate time on assessments to do their very best! Click here to access the WSMS STAAR Timeline. Thank you!

WSMS PTO

Volunteers Needed
The PTO is hosting a Valentine's luncheon for teachers on February 11th, and we need a few people to help serve (in a COVID-conscious way). Please sign up!

Outstanding Service Award
The WSMS PTO will be recognizing two special individuals who have given outstanding service to our children this year. This recognition is one of the highest honors which can be bestowed upon an individual by our PTO. The only requirement for receiving this honor is that the recipient has promoted students' well-being and demonstrated care for children. A nominee for recognition may be a parent, volunteer, teacher, administrator, or a community leader. The recipient is not required to be a PTO member. The recognition committee will carefully consider each candidate.  A list of people who have previously received this honor (so as not to duplicate recipients) can be found at
.

PTO Board 2021-2022
