Dear WSMS Parents and Guardians,
I know the resignation of our former superintendent last week came as much of a surprise to you as it did to me. It was extremely important for me to talk through this with our staff. The most important message I could give them was that NOTHING changes the hard work we do each day for our students. We continue to strive for excellence and do the hard work that is best for your kids. With that said, we have three months of school left and a lot to accomplish. Nothing great was ever accomplished with average effort and we take that approach every day at WSMS.
We have added a webinar on Monday, March 15 at 1:00 PM for parents of rising 9th grade students (current 8th graders). This will be hosted by the LHS counselors and address any questions regarding registration. More information is below.
We have Spring Break next week and no matter how your family plans to spend the week, I hope it is safe and restful.

NEW! Signs of Suicide Presentations at WSMS
WSMS counselors will present, SOS - Signs of Suicide, a Suicide Prevention presentation to our 7th and 8th graders after Spring Break during their History classes. So parents are better informed and have strong talking points at home, please join Mr. Parker and the WSMS counselors for a parent presentation on March 4th from 1:00-2:00. NEW! Parent Registration Webinar - 8TH GRADE ONLY
We have received a lot of questions about high school registration and the need for clarity around some items in particular. The high school counselors will be hosting a registration webinar on Monday, March 15 at 1:00 PM. The beginning of the webinar will include a presentation on questions we have provided them from the feedback we have received from you. The remaining portion of the webinar will be the counselors answering questions submitted during the webinar. This presentation precludes the actual registration that takes place later that same week for our 8th grade students

NEW! WSMS Choir UIL Success
The WSMS A Cappella Choir participated in the UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Evaluation on Monday. The choir performed a concert of three different pieces and were judged on tone, technique, and musicianship. In the sight-reading portion of the contest, students were given a piece of music that they had never seen or heard before. They then had six minutes to study (without singing anything out loud) before performing it for the judges.
I am so proud to say that the A Cappella Choir received straight superior ratings on both concert and sight-reading, winning a Sweepstakes Award! Our singers were so professional and they performed so beautifully; they really represented Willow Springs well today!
As you can imagine, this school year has been especially challenging for our choir program--singing in masks and face shields is no joke! Despite all of the hardships, this group of singers has worked so hard and maintained such a positive attitude, and I am so proud of them!

WSMS Cheer Tryout Clinic - March 24-25th
The tryout clinic is not mandatory to tryout for WSMS Cheer. Students who are new to the WSMS Cheer program trying out for 7th or 8th-grade cheer will meet in the main gym at WSMS from 4:30-6:00 pm on March 24th and 25th to practice and prepare for tryouts. All cheerleaders need to learn the tryout material posted on the cheer website before attending the tryout clinic. This material will be posted one week before tryouts on March 17th. In order to reduce numbers and increase social distancing, returning cheerleaders will NOT attend the afterschool clinic. Instead, returning cheerleaders will receive the same clinic during cheer class. C heer website: www.tinyurl.com/wsmscheer
WSMS Official Cheer Tryout- March 26th In-person tryouts will occur on March 26th from 4:30-9:00 pm. We will assign time slots to each student for tryouts to reduce numbers and increase social distancing on campus. Masks must be worn during tryouts. Students will check in ten minutes before their assigned time and leave immediately after their tryout. Parents will wait outside the gym for their students. If a student chooses to submit a virtual video tryout, the video must be submitted no later than March 26th at 8:00 am so the videos can be shown to the judges. Any student who does not submit a virtual tryout video by the deadline, or attend the in-person tryout will automatically be placed on the C team for the 2021-2022 school year.
UPDATED! "Stop The Bleed" Student Training in the Spring
We have one more opportunity for your student to take part in this.
This program is a difference maker and will allow students to possess a critical skill set that can be carried with them throughout their entire lives. Stop The Bleed training allows students to learn how to administer initial care in a life threatening situation to an injured individual.
Although this training is not mandatory for our students, we are required by state law (86RHB496) to offer it to all students in grade levels 7-12. If you choose to sign your child up for this free training, keep in mind they will be exposed to photographs of injured individuals that will contain severe injuries. Students will learn how to tend to laceration, broken bones, puncture wounds, etc. Students will also learn skills such as applying a tourniquet, applying pressure to injuries and bandaging an injured individual.
Our safety and security foundation is built on the "Force Multiply" concept. We believe in empowering our teachers, staff members, students, parents and community members with knowledge that can save lives! If you would like to register your child for this training, please click on the link below. Each class is limited to 40 spots. The sessions will be led by LISD security personnel.

There will be no makeup tryout dates (with the exception of quarantining due to Covid) and there is no penalty for missing any days (track, UIL, vacation, etc.) as we have set four days to impress. During the individual meetings we will let the girls know if they made the team or not. The only equipment the girls need to bring with them are a pair of cleats, if they have them, shin guards, and water. We will provide balls, bibs, and cones.
