Dear WSMS Parents and Guardians,

I hope everyone has a safe and relaxing Spring Break with friends and family.  Once we return from Spring Break, our 7th and 8th graders will be taking part in our campus wide Service Learning project on March 17th and 18th.  We are looking forward to a couple great days of service learning to beautify our campus.

If you need anything next week, please do not hesitate to send me an email or call my cell phone at 214-293-9938

Have a great Spring Break!

Upcoming Student Holidays
Spring Break for students and staff is March 9th  through March 13th.

April 10th is a student and teacher holiday.  April 19th is a designated bad weather day. It will be a student and teacher holiday if we do not have a school closing due to bad weather between now and then.

RESCHEDULED - WSMS Service Learning Project - March 17 & 18
WSMS Service Learning Project - has been rescheduled.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, March 17th & 18th, all WSMS students will be participating in our Annual Spring Service Learning Project. In an effort to beautify WSMS and to encourage student ownership, this year*s project will take place on campus. This year's theme is Leopards By Nature.

All 7th grade students (Tuesday, March 17th) and all 8th grade students (Wednesday, March 18th) will participate in a campus wide project through their Science class.  Students will be developing beds for native plants and flowers in front of our school and near our back garden. Prior to this project, students will receive an introductory lesson on the importance of native plants, habitats, and ecosystems to their community and school.

What to wear? Come to school ready to roll up your sleeves and get dirty. Please wear Leopards by Nature t-shirt and comfortable pants. If your child did not purchase a t-shirt, a  WSMS or Lovejoy t-shirt is preferred, comfortable closed-toed shoes (they might get dirty...if you have boots or old athletic shoes, that's perfect) and a jacket/sweatshirt. We will provide gardening gloves for all students. All Leopards by Nature t-shirts that were ordered online have been given out.

Did you sign up to donate items on our Wish List? If so, please bring all donations that weren't already shipped to WSMS.

Still needed:
We still need Volunteers to help lead student work groups! Please consider helping us for a 1/2 or full day.

Rakes - Have a rake at home we can borrow next week? We need more...If you put your last name on duct tape on handle, we'll make sure you get it back after service learning. Please bring any labeled rakes to front office Friday, March 6th or Monday, March 16th!

Bamboo sticks - for bug hotels on supply sign up genius.

We are all Leopards by Nature. Thank you to everyone who has already helped us grow at Willow Springs.

Several local businesses have helped make this possible. We want to recognize these organizations and thank them for making our service learning and campus beautification efforts possible.

We look forward to a fun experience!

DEADLINE TO REGISTER IS TOMORROW, MARCH 6TH - WSMS 3 on 3 Basketball Tourney
On March 20, WSMS will hold our annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament in the WSMS gyms from 4:30--6:00. The cost is $40 per team and each team can consist of 3-4 players.  Teams may register by  clicking here or pick up a registration form in the front office.  Students are welcome to come and watch this tournament free of charge. We will have pizza, snacks, and water for purchase.  All items can be purchased for $1.00.

American Heart Association Presentations at WSMS
On Monday and Tuesday March 16th and 17, all WSMS students will have the opportunity to participate in the American Heart Challenge presentation through advisory class.  The American Heart Challenge is geared specifically for middle and high school students. Through this program, students are educated through a "Ted Talk" format about how to make smart choices to live a longer, healthier life. The featured topic this year is learning about living smoke/vape free.  Each presentation will be approximately 30 minutes long.  Students will need to have their phones during the presentation because they will be asked to take a challenge (live smoke / vape free, exercise for 60 minutes a day or limit sugary drinks) and reach out to friends / family to help fight heart disease.

WSMS Cheer Tryouts - March 25-27

Reporting an Incident at WSMS
One of our top priorities at Willow Springs Middle School is to ensure the safety of all of our students.  Our most important asset in this is the eyes and ears our students can provide us on campus. We will begin using the Safe Schools Alert System this year for students and parents to report incidents they are aware of happening.  You can access the system by going to  www.lovejoyisd.net .  Under Quick Links click on "REPORT IT!"  You will have four ways to submit an incident.  Furthermore, you will receive an access code to follow the progression of how an incident is being handled.

WSMS PTA

Key Points Leading to our Decision to dissolve as a PTA and reform as a PTO

1. Of our $8 PTA dues, we currently send $4.50 to pay for state and national dues. This totals between $1500-2000 per campus. As a PTO, this money stays on each campus
to benefit LJ students.

2. We have a very strong infrastructure (bylaws, standing rules, budgeting process, officers & chairs)- these will remain basically the same and are compliant with the IRS.

3. We have a strong framework for training and support- this would remain in effect. Council will support our locals.

4. Our current programming is not tied to Texas PTA.

5. Texas PTA is an effective advocate for children in Texas. Lovejoy is also a very effective advocate for LISD students.

6.. We believe that maintaining a positive environment for volunteers is crucial and that we can more effectively manage that environment as a PTO.

If you have any other pressing questions please feel free to reach out so that I can answer those for you.  Please keep your eyes open for a special meeting to be called with Texas PTA to make the final vote on whether we proceed further in the future as a PTO.  You can feel free to call or text me at 214-534-6200 or email me at [email protected]

Reminders
To have reminders sent to your phone about donations needed, volunteer time, PTA meetings and parent presentations please text @wsmspta2019 to 81010
